Viajes El Corte Inglés CSR report

Viajes El Corte Inglés understands Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as the commitment involved in achieving its corporate goals, considering the impact of its activity on society.  In order to fulfil this mission, as part of the El Corte Inglés Corporate Group, Viajes El Corte Inglés aims to integrate the concerns of its stakeholders into its daily business and in its relationships with them.
This year we have prepared our First Corporate Social Responsibility Master Plan 2021-25.

Shopping experience, digitalisation and sustainability are the foundations of this project, which has the ultimate goal of conducting our business whilst adhering to the 10 basic principles of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. We are focused on sustainability as one of the strategic pillars of the future.
In addition, we are progressing with the approval of our supplier network. We have sent a questionnaire to a selection of business partners, which binds them to our Code of Ethics. In addition, we have set up a project in collaboration with our business partners to gain a greater understanding of the CSR management policies and ESG criteria in order to evolve towards more responsible tourism.

In February 2017 Viajes El Corte Inglés signed the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

Viajes El Corte Inglés has taken on its commitment as a socially responsible company, building a constant and fluid relationship with all its stakeholders.

As an El Corte Inglés Group company, Viajes El Corte Inglés has signed up to the United Nations Global Compact, which means committing to all the ethics and principles of human rights, labour, environmental and anti-corruption set out in this international code as our own.

Furthermore, in July 2017 Viajes El Corte Inglés signed the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

During this time, the company has demonstrated its firm commitment to sustainable development by implementing various projects and activities. Since 2015 it has also focused on achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a member of the Tourism Group and SDGs created by the Spanish network of the Global Compact at the end of 2015, Viajes El Corte Inglés has promoted activities to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and to make the tourism industry fairer, more ethical and more sustainable.

The main actions have been:

  • Distribute the ten characteristics of a responsible traveller
  • Hold training courses on ‘Responsible procurement’ for the procurement departments
  • Prepare the Tourism Guide for sustainable development
  • Hold training courses on Sustainable Events for the MICE areas

In line with its transparency goals, the group has created an independent internal body called the Regulatory Compliance Function, which reports to the Board of Directors.

This body is in charge of defining organisation and management models that include monitoring and control measures to which all managers and employees of the El Corte Inglés Group are subject and that allow the company to move towards the best Corporate Governance practices. In 2019 Viajes El Corte Inglés earned the Bronze EcoVadis Medal for sustainability for the second year running, an achievement that is only reached by 40% of the companies assessed.

In 2021 Viajes El Corte Inglés once again takes another step on its path towards sustainability, going from a bronze medal to a Silver medal from EcoVadis.

EcoVadis is one of the main sustainability rating platforms worldwide and only 30% of the companies that are evaluated in EcoVadis reach the Silver medal.

In order to award it, EcoVadis thoroughly assesses social, ethical, environmental issues, etc. to rate and recognise the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the companies that aspire to achieve it.

This achievement places us within the group of 14% with the best EcoVadis rating in the Travel Agency and Tour Operators Sector.

Viajes El Corte Inglés certifies its carbon footprint calculation

The environmental strategy of Viajes El Corte Inglés is encompassed within three programmes that are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, which have been integrated into our Sustainability Master Plan (2021- 2025). This plan maps out our strategic lines of action in this area for the next few years.

Our commitment to the environment has driven improvements in our environmental performance and has led, among other projects, to the certification in 2021 of the calculation, under the UNE EN ISO 14064-1:2012 standard, of the greenhouse gases we produce in the course of our business.

Viajes El Corte Inglés has been awarded the Seal from the Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO). This award reflects the efforts made by the Spanish organisations which calculate and reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by their activities.
