Comfortable apartment and good location in safe neighbourhood

Just to clarify, this Swiss Star apartment block on Universitatstrasse is in a good area of the city, near the University. There may be other apartments in a sketchy area but this is definitely a safe and family-friendly location. The apartment block is on the number 10 tramline, about 25 minutes from Zurich airport (Kloten - ZRH). By tram it takes about 10 minutes to get from the apartment to the city centre, to Central and Zurich HB stops. Nearest tram stop is Winkelriedstrasse and the Swiss Star apartment block (yellow building) is just across the road. However do note there was some tramline construction work during October so sometimes the tram going in the airport direction (out of city) did not stop at Winkelriedstrasse. In that case simply alight at the next stop up or down and walk about 3 minutes to the apartments. The construction work was a little noisy at times, but only on weekdays, after 7am and it seemed to stop most days around 4pm. There was no work during the weekend when we were there. The apartments have no reception staff so to check-in you obtain your key by entering a keycode (provided by email) into a keybox by the side entrance. The single key that is provided is tagged with your apartment number. Keep your key with you for the duration of your stay. Note if the key does not open the main entrance door (at side of building) there is another entrance door at the back. There is no elevator so you need to be able to carry all your bags upstairs if the apartment is on a higher floor (as ours was). The block was quiet and we didn't really see or hear any other residents during our 6-day stay. The single room suite we had was comfortable, with a basic kitchenette and a separate bathroom. Several towels and some soap, shampoos were provided. As its a self-catering apartment you can ofcourse provide or buy your own supplies. Simple cooking is definitely possible with what is provided. There is a Coop store just across the road and a good restaurant (Linde Oberstrass) is only a few minutes walk up the hill. Also a bread shop. Note Coop is closed on Sundays. The nights were drawing in at the end of October but the radiator heating system worked well enough. The apartment windows only had lace curtains on them but also had roller blinds for privacy at night. The wifi service was easy to access and the speed was reasonable (instructions posted on the wall by the apartment entrance). Obviously it would be prudent, for security and privacy reasons, to use a VPN on your phone, tablet or laptop. Note the apartment did not have any fire alarm or sprinkler system. The only escape route appeared to be down the stairs. Overall the apartment proved to be a safe, family-friendly and convenient base for visiting and exploring Zurich. It has good transport links plus local shops, restaurant and bank in the immediate vicinity. The comfort level was consistent with that of a student type apartment, with reasonable supply of towels and toiletries. Check-in (& out) was easy. The lack of reception staff was not an issue.

Convenient apartment near a tram stop

When you book the apartment, you receive a link to register and get a keycode. You can then use this code to collect your key when you arrive at the apartment (check-in from 2pm), and post your key back in the same automated box when you check out (by 11am). The apartment looked very close to Zurich Hbf on the map, but in fact the walk was all uphill so I'd recommend getting a tram from the train station - there's a stop directly in front of the apartment and you can get a 24-hour ticket for the same price as two singles. We were happy with the area; there was a bakery next door and a supermarket opposite. We didn't notice any noise apart from the church bells chiming on the hour. We were there on a Sunday, when most shops and restaurants were closed, so you may want to consider that if arriving on a Sunday and pick something up from the station. The apartment itself was clean and minimalist. There was a double bed, a TV, wardrobe, table, bathroom with shower (towels and shower gel provided) and a kitchenette with dishwasher. We were only there for one night so didn't cook, but there was a small stock of utensils to cook basic dishes. The bed was comfortable, the temperature was good, our room on the third floor had a balcony which looked out over the city. The free wifi connected and worked without any issues. The apartment building doesn't have a lift, so take this into account if you struggle with stairs.

    Awful

Avoid this hotel at all costs. Pictures online are deceiving. They say they include toiletries like shampoo but they give you 2 small bars of soap that small like the cherry porta-potty smell instead. The rooms are like a torture chamber with no ventilation. They give you one small fan which does nothing. My husband and I stood in the hallway for hours by the open window since the room was at least 10 degrees hotter. It was literally the most miserable nights we had in Europe, and weve been traveling for 6 weeks. Do yourself a favor and learn from our miserable mistake. STAY ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HERE.

    Good bones, bad management

I feel for Swiss-Star. I've rented from them several times through the years, and they used to be a really great option. But no doubt, competition from app-based lodging is squeezing them, and they've responded by cutting back on everything that makes a stay pleasant, unfortunately. The good: Oberstrass is at a great location if you're around the University (main, ETH, or Irchelpark). It's right on Tram Line 10 from the airport, there's a little Coop grocery store across the street, and the solid old building is quite spacious. I had a one-bedroom with a huge living room, a comfortable bedroom, and an adequate kitchen. It can get a bit noisy from traffic on Universitätsstrasse, but it quiets down well at night. The wi-fi works fine, and there are adequate outlets to charge devices. The bed is comfortable, linens are clean and changed weekly, and check-in and check-out are easy. The bad: They advertise these apartments as 'furnished', but that's stretching reality. The furnishings are the bare minimum, and of low quality. The living room, though large, had only a sofa, a lounge chair, an Ikea storage cubby, a small rickety table with four very basic chairs, and a very small TV mounted on the wall that got hardly any reception. There was so little furniture that my voice echoed. Points, though, for nice art on the walls. The furnishing of the kitchen was even less satisfactory. Very basic dishes for 3 (plate, bowl, cup, glass, mug, wineglass), adequate pots and pans, and very little else. Absolutely NO way to make coffee.. not even a filter (I had to buy a Melitta filter holder for a whopping 5 Francs). No pitcher or serving bowls, and the cheapest knives and kitchen tools I've ever seen -- which were dull. I understand why Swiss Star may not want to provide pod coffee makers, given the maintenance... but no pitcher, filter, etc., means there was really no way to make either tea or coffee in the morning, except to use a pan. Ugh! No supplies of any kind, except a nearly empty bottle of dish detergent that I assume was left by a previous guest... I had to buy a bottle. The Ugly: when I arrived, the refrigerator door made an odd thunk every time I opened it, and by the second day, the panel on the face was simply falling off. I sent an e-mail... they said they'd "alert their team". A week later, I sent another e-mail (by now I had done an emergency repair with some plastic wrap, just to keep it from falling off entirely and causing more damage). "Yes, we'll alert our team..." Yeah, right! Two weeks of gingerly opening the refrigerator every time because of the defect. The lounge chair was also falling apart when I arrived, with screws falling out, but they did send someone to repair that, when I let them know. Overall: the prices are competitive with app-based lodging, but be aware that the furnishings are bare-bones. I'm reasonably hardy and just put up with the inconveniences, especially re coffee... but I really think their corner-cutting has gone too far. Next time, I'll probably use the app... the prices are comparable, and you usually get a much better equipped place.

    Clean, simple

Swiss Star Wiekidon Apartment mit 2 Schlafzimmern Zelgstrasse 19, 8003 Zürich, Switzerland Not sure if all the "Swiss Star" are the same. The one I am reviewing is for the address above. -No check in counter or anything. -After the time you are allowed to check in, you basically use keycode to get in. (so luggage storage was a problem) -Spacious apartment. Bedroom decent size. Clean sheets -Small kitchen We were only there for one night. Would definitely stay here again. But pictures on the website is not exactly what you get.
