    Delightful cottages

Houtkapperspoort has been a special place for my family for over 25years we enjoy the space and the amazing mountains surrounding the lovely grounds. My grandchildren have enjoyed the pool over the years and now my two great grandchildren enjoyed the visits from the Springbok everyday. The management are very good sorting out any problems in the cottage promptly ensuring our stay is perfect in cottage No 9 we will be back.

    Lovely setting, variation between cottages

12 of us stayed in 3 separate properties on site in late December 2019. The site is very nicely laid out and landscaped, and the rounds are beautifully maintained. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, including the manager and deputy manager - couldn't have been nicer. The properties we stayed in were all fine - 1 was excellent (Blue Gum), 1 was perfectly all right (Maple Tree) and 1 (Kei Apple) was OK but a bit tired - blind broken, keys a bit fiddly in locks, etc - nothing that affected our holiday, but due for a bit of maintainance. The site is managed as a single unit, but the properties are all individually owned, which I imagine is why visitors have such variable experiences. The position is very good - pretty quiet despite being on a main road, easy access to multiple shops and restaurants within a few miles. We found the site well guarded and secure. I would certainly be happy to go back but would try to get up to date information on the exact property I was booked for

    Unit 16 Maple Tree

The cottage is a lovely size. Good size kitchen, granite tops, everything you need. Downstairs has a bedroom with 2 single beds, a bathroom that has a shower and a washing machine. Internet is good and fast. Upstairs is a room that has a double bed and a bath (in the bedroom). Toilet and basin upstairs is in own room. Lovely size patio. Away from main road. Very comfortable for a family. Easy checkin

We loved it so much, we came bac

As we stayed in 2 different cottages a week apart I will review each here: Overall surroundings: lovely gardens with free roaming springbok and guinea fowl. It was lovely to arrive at our unit with the springbok literally waiting to greet us! Checking was quick and smooth for both units. Unit 11: Tinas Cottage. This one is closer to the main road, so it can get a little noisy in day time if you have the doors open, however at night it is dead quiet! Downstairs is a front patio, walk in to a well laid out living room, with TV that has DSTV. Theres a great kitchen (full size) so entertaining is good. Right now (June 19) theres a fridge that is non operational, and an operational fridge, make sure you put your food in the operational fridge. Outside back is a braai/BBQ that is cleaned every day. WiFi in this unit is great, with router in unit. Upstairs is bedroom, bathroom (large shower only) and outside patio you can sit on and enjoy the views of the mountain and the wildlife. Daily cleaning with a cleaning lady who is super friendly - she definitely is a treasure! The following week, my family begged to go back, so this time we booked unit 12 next door to 11. This unit has a full kitchen, but is smaller due to the fact that this unit has a full bathroom on ground floor. It also has underfloor heating which made for a nice comfy winter stay! It is decorated more French country style. There is a day bed on ground floor. Again WiFi is great and they have DSTV. Upstairs is bedroom (big but slightly smaller than unit 11). Lovely outside patio. The bathroom is great. There is a broken towel rail, but they have ample space for towels. Behind the bathroom door is extra space for items. Overall we loved both our stays here, and felt safe and secure. It has day access to Hout Bay/Llandudno and the Atlantic seaboard, as well as the Southern Suburbs - so a great ideal spot. Lots of activities to do across the road, and a restaurant 1 min away. If you are planning on staying here, look at the map of the properties. 21, 22, 23 are in the middle and have fantastic view and are quieter than the others.

Superb from the outside, less good up close

Resort: gated and composed of 16 pretty, self-catering cottages set in lush gardens at the foot of Table Mountain, overlooking Hout Bay Valley and Sentinel Peak beyond. Location: ideal for anyone wishing to stay in the vicinity of Cape Town without the hassle, noise, traffic and bustle. Its literally a 6 minute walk to Constantia Nek with its zip wires (Acrobranch Constantia); organic vineyard; and hop-on-off bus routes which head into town or around the Constantia vineyards. A longer hike will take you to the superb Kirstenbosch botanic gardens. Cape Town and the Hout Bay beaches lie some 17 and 7 km away respectively. Facing south, with Table Mountain to the rear, the resort doesnt benefit from too much sun (at least not by end April) but we didnt mind the cooler climate. Gardens: beautifully maintained (and watered, we were surprised to see it so green), with flowerbeds, mature trees, extensive lawns, plenty of birds and resident springbok, theres also a tennis court, a pretty swimming pool and a playground. The cottages blend in well with the surroundings and while most are semi-detached, all seemed to come with some degree of privacy. The views varied, with those on the north side and higher up being better. Cottage: two storey, stone clad, semi-detached Khoka Moya (No. 20), with covered verandah, private parking space and views over the Twelve Apostles. It comes with two bedrooms (two single beds upstairs with air-conditioning and a double bed downstairs with fan); bathroom, with combined bath and shower; lounge with TV and DVD player, sofa and armchairs, a fireplace, as well as a narrow table for four beside the window and an adjoining kitchenette with stove, oven and large fridge. To the front is the pretty covered veranda with table and fine views (the best on the resort from what I could see), while to the back is the BBQ (charcoal). So why the average? Communication: not the best. Receipt of payment wasnt acknowledged (despite my specifically asking), but an email was sent saying the funds hadnt gone through the day before we were supposed to arrive, by which time we were already on the train to the airport. Its not easy trying to sort out proof of bank payments while travelling, especially when flights are cancelled and connections missed. The last thing we needed was to worry about our first nights accommodation. It was all the more exasperating as payment had been made a good month before arrival. Check-in: we arrived late at night because of our re-booked flight (I warned the resort) and instead of being welcomed, we were made to pay for our stay (again) by credit card as they still hadnt found our transfer despite my sending them the bank statement. The least they could have done was let us sort things out in the morning (when lo and behold, their finance department finally discovered our paymentno apology or compensation was offered). Neither were we given any information on the resort or the cottage or indeed the keys (which we didnt notice came with an additional fob). We didnt have a car so walked to the cottage and while we were given a map, no torch was provided and it wasnt easy to locate our cottage, especially lugging two heavy cases (which we feared might wake everyone up). Luckily we bumped into a security guard but he didnt seem to know the cottage had an alarm (hence the fob on the keyring) which went off when we opened the door. Cottage: pretty as a picture from the outside and on the website, but less appealing in situ. We were greeted by a musky smell (windows need to be kept closed at night and when you go out because of the alarm); a heavily stained carpet in the double bedroom; chipped tiles in the kitchen which make the floor look dirty (the tiles throughout the downstairs felt sticky too); the veranda although undoubtedly charming, came with no lighting other than very dim fairy lights; the kitchen supplies really did consist of just tea and coffee, there was nothing else, not even aluminium, or essentials such as salt and pepper (weve never come across such a sparsely supplied cottage in our travels before) and the lack of a cooker hood meant the lounge got infused with cooking odours; there was no sponge for washing up and the drying up towel shed fibres (perhaps guests arent supposed to wash up? We left our plates to dry naturally and they were always put away by the excellent housekeeping team); wifi was slow; the stairs to the first floor are steep and narrow (not a problem for us as we didnt use them but something to bear in mind for larger parties); the double bed was small and the mattress on the firm side; guests must use their own phones to call reception as none is provided (not so great for international guests); the guest info booklet was almost too grungy to open; but the worst thing as far as I was concerned was the shower taps which were impossible to regulate. I spent more time trying to adjust the flow than actually showering which was near impossible as the temperature alternated between scaldingly hot and freezing cold. This is simply unacceptable when water is so scarce. Note to cottage owner: the entire cottage is in dire need of up-dating and refreshing. Although housekeeping was excellent, there is only so much they can do. If you choose not to refurbish the cottage for some reason, then please at least install a thermostat tap in the shower. Tip: stock up at the excellent Woolworths in Constantia and if you do catch the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus from Constantia Nek, bear in mind that it only goes clockwise and check the last bus back (service stopped at 15.40 when we were there). Dont forget to visit the neighbouring Kirstenbosch botanical gardens, to which you can hike from the resort.
