    Frog chorus

Our travel agent really sold us this place when we were booking accomodation for our trip. We thought 'what a great idea', staying on a wine estate, that would save us a trip elsewhere for wine tasting. Wrong. When I couldn't find details of tastings on their website, I emailed them to enquire and was told they only grow the grapes, they don't produce. Bummer! Never mind, it was still a stunning place to stay so we didn't whine about the lack of wine. We arrived at the property to be face with a locked gate. Instructions on the wall said to call the reception desk who would remotely open the gate, however, we didn't have signal on our phones to be able to do this. Luckily, someone was leaving the estate so as the gates opened to let them out, we drove in, or we may have been there yet! Not the best start. We were greeted at reception and informed the lady of our problem getting onto the estate as we'd not had a phone signal; we said an intercom would have been better but we were told they'd had one previously but it got vandalised. She also informed us that since there were only 2 other couples staying on the estate, the kitchen was closed so we would have to have our evening meal at a restaurant in Paarl (this was a good 25 mins drive away), which she booked for us later that evening. Breakfast was served from 8am, but we had to be up and away by 7am as we were volunteering at a nearby cheetah sanctuary for the day; start time there was 7.15am so we would miss breakfast (not Palmiet's fault). We were shown to our room; up in the thatched part of the house. First impressions were WOW. A good sized room, with a gorgeous elevated view over the gardens and fountain/pond. We were also shown the lounge area and where we could get wifi. It seemed such a tranquil place to be. To ensure we could get back onto the estate after our meal in Paarl, we were given 2 remote key fobs which would allow us to open the gates on our return. I thought this was a lovely touch by the lady, who was concerned we might be stuck outside the gates again. We had a lovely meal in Paarl, albeit without alcohol as we had to drive (I don't drink either if he's not, it's not fair) the returned to Palmiet for a relatively early night so we would be fresh for the morning. That's where it all went wrong! The first thing we noticed going back into the room was the smell of the thatch; it was awful. The door had been open when we were first shown to the room, so we'd not noticed anything. This was worse for my other half as he was on the side of the bed closest to the thatch. He said it smelled like dirty nappies. To make matters worse, he bumped his head a couple of times on the beams supporting the thatch - this is what induced his thatch-tourette's! Whenever he sees a thatched roof now he swears at it!! There was an automatic air freshener on top of the wardrobe, but the can was empty so we sprayed some deodorant instead to try and make the room smell a little sweeter; it didn't really help. We needed to sleep, so settled down for the night. The thatch, as well as being smelly wasn't very soundproof, we could hear the road noise. The estate is close to a main road and motorway junction, so there are alot of trucks that pass by. Worse than that though was the pond; more specifically the mating calls of the frogs in the pond. They were soooooooo LOUD. My other half put earplugs in to try and drown the noise out, but I just had to try and ignore them. It took ages but we finally got to sleep. When I woke in the morning, I thought it was light and checked my phone to see what time it was....8.05am!!! We'd slept right through the alarm, something I've never done before. Luckily the cheetah sanctuary (Ashia Cheetah Experience) wasn't too far away, so we quickly showered and dressed and left the estate. On reflection, this could have been a lovely place to stay and I'm sure many people have had a great time there, but for us it was one of the worst nights sleep we've ever had. As beautiful as the place is, we were really glad to have only been there for one night. In fairness to Palmiet, wildlife is beyond their control, but be aware of frog noise levels if you are staying here in September. We maybe didn't see Palmiet at it's best as it was out of season, but we would be hesitant to return given our experience.

    Great service, quaint setting

We stayed for one night. As the only guests we were kindly upgraded to the honeymoon suit. The setting was lovely and peaceful on the outskirts of Paarl. Staff were very helpful. We had booked for dinner but as an alternative the hotel arranged complimentary travel to and from Noop in the town itself (I've written a separate review of Noop). Breakfast in the morning was satisfying. Unfortunately Palmiet Valley didn't offer wine tasting but we were offered a glass of their wine on arrival.

    Stunning but overpriced.

Beautiful peaceful estate great for one or two nights but lacking in facilities for a longer stay. Reception staff are very helpful and knowledable about the area and there are some nice restauarnts in Paarl. Transport is a must as taxi service is very expensive and if you have no car you are at the mercy of costly fares.Overall found the place very beautiful and peaceful but expensive and lacking in facilities.

    Step back in time !

We had a couple of nights at Palmiet and wished we could have stayed longer. It really is a peaceful retreat as well as a great base to explore from, it felt like an old country house stay. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite ( despite having been married over 30 yrs! ) and it was spacious and beautifully furnished with the added bonus of being part of the main breakfast and guest lounge area. The gardens are lovely for a stroll and pool area is just right. Service was unobtrusive but very efficient and friendly. We were unable to attend the Sunset drinks on the viewing platform but it is on the list for our next visit !!
