    Wonderful Hospitality

The warm welcome and hospitality of the staff, the boat ride and sunset cruise, the freshly prepared meals and the attention to details is what made this a memorable holiday for our family and friends. Muslim showers in the bathroom were a bonus and the outdoor showers were a treat. Sadly there was a lot of damage done during the Rufiji River floods but with perseverance and grit the team did an amazing job giving us an authentic Tanzanian safari and hospitality experience. The open cars in Selous were a unique experience for us and the boat rides were really fun for all ages. Highly reccomended

    A fantastic stay!

We had a wonderful stay at the Selous Wilderness Camp. From Zanzibar we flew directly to the Selous Game Reserve where we were welcomed by two very friendly and dedicated guides. We started directly with the first safari (we were the only guests because another group cancelled very short-term), where we could see an incredible amount of animals (among others a hippo on land, a lion, elephants, wild dogs, impressive birds ... and giraffes / zebras / warthogs more than you can imagine). Our guides told us a lot of fascinating things about the animals and the plant world and arranged the day according to our needs. We finished the evening in the camp before we went on safari again the next day. The camp is wonderfully secluded on a sandbank, so that you can be completely on your own. Our tent was comfortable and spacious, the bed was very comfortable (which is very important for us). Inside the tent there was a toilet behind a wall and outside the tent a shower protected from view. To our surprise there were no mosquitos in the camp. Our malaria prophylaxis was therefore not necessary. We were told that there are no mosquitoes because these animals prefer to lay their eggs in standing waters and not in flowing waters like the Rufiji River. Besides the absence of mosquitos, we were surprised by the pleasant climate. From Zanzibar we were used to heat, the weather in the Selous Game Reserve was surprisingly pleasant (we didn't need a fan at night and could sleep very well). As the name "Wilderness Camp" suggests, visitors should be prepared for numerous millipedes there. We coulnd't get why some guest choose to stay a wilderness camp and wish to see wild animals on a safari but then complain about animals like millipedes (which indeed happened...). The staff at the camp was really incredibly friendly and helpful, so we felt welcome and very comfortable at all times. Altogether we can absolutely recommend the camp. Especially visitors who appreciate privacy and an authentic stay and who on the one hand do not want to miss a certain standard (proper bed, shower) and on the other hand do not expect an absolute luxury lodge will love this place.

Really nice camp at the river

I stayed here for 3 nights as part of a safari in the south of Tanzania and we loved it! It's so great to sit at the deck and just watch the hippos in the river. Lot's of monkeys also around and amazing birds. The tents are very big with a good bed. The bathroom is simple but everything you need. Showering outside is very special. We didn't have problems with power when we were there, as there was power on solar. So there was always some light in the room as well as a fan. The swimmingpool is not big but it was nice to refresh. The nicest part for us was the location on the river. It was really a surprise for us that we had to get to the camp by boat. The staff was waiting for us and helped us from the boat onto the shore. The sunset from the boat was so amazing! The food was great, nothing pretentious, just good food but sometimes way too much! I can definitely recommend this camp to everybody who really wants to experience the nature.

A Shadow Of Its Former Self

We were last here in 2011, so, how disappointed we were when we arrived to find just a shadow of what we remembered! Gone were the fairy lights around the swimming pool....now just monitor lizards enjoyed the warm water. Gone were the sundowners on the sandy banks of the river....now even the steps down to the sand were gone. We used the same tent as we used in 2011....but what a difference! This time there was a 3 foot square hole in the gable of the tent, and the rain left a pool of water at the bottom of our bed. There was no hot water to our taps. Our wash basins leaked cold water all over the floor and we had to put towels down each day before washing. These towels were not changed unless we specially requested dry ones. When enjoying our outdoor shower, we could be easily viewed by anyone strolling on the sand. What a pity that the showers were not in the bedroom, and the toilet outside, instead of vice versa! Elecric light was not available after 21.30, and there was no wifi provided. I'm sorry that my report is so dismal because the position of this camp in superb! A wonderful river, superb friendly staff, and a manager, Freddie, who could not do enough to be helpful. How he puts up with the deterioration around him, I will never know! The owners of this camp MUST make some serious investment. Why two points? I have awarded one for the camp's stunning position on the river, and another for Freddie who kept smiling throughout every one of our complaints.

    Selous Weekend

Snug under its thatched roofs the camp is a short boat ride over the Rufiji River which adds to its rustic charm. The highlight for us was the attentive staff who took very good care of us. Special mentions for the manager Freddie who looked after us with great good humour, Kenneth the safari guide for his deep knowledge of the animals and birds we encountered and skill in finding them for us, and the anonymous chef who provided delicious meals and picnics, catering effortlessly with last minute notice of a vegan guest among the new arrivals. This is not a glitzy place but the sincere goodwill of the staff made our stay a very happy one.
