Nice located but poor service & cuisine quality

Situated in beautiful landscapes, this resort had great potential. However, unfriendly and arrogant employees, poor hospitality make up the downside. Also the food quality varies substantially. On the basement floors we also had issues with ants and stuff, so make sure to pic upper floor room when booking there. Altogether I'd choose another venue close by, which also has this beautiful views but leverages better hospitality, as usually expected in Austria.

    Excelent

Excelent food, service and facilities! Is the second time and still super impressed. Lovely family place. Amazing facilities for kids and adults alike. Very clean. Loved the adults spa and Reini - the Aufguss. Absolutely will come back !

    A little bit like paradise

The surroundings and upkeep of this resort deserve a 5-star rating, however there are areas which are more low-key hence it is currently a 4-star superior hotel. If you're used to high end hotels, you do have to adjust your expectations accordingly as you will not have the usual pamperings like a welcome drink upon check in, a pool attendant or staff running after you offering a towel or a bottle of water when you set out for your hiking or biking excursion. Having said so, staff here are a bit more reserved, they're helpful when you approach them for assistance but not the 'anticipating your needs' type. They tried to have your needs fulfilled for instance bathrobe and kids' amenities readily displayed in your room, a box of breadsticks as welcome gift and a home-made preserve as a farewell gift and they pretty much give you the privacy and space you need throughout your stay. We stayed here for 8 nights, the first 2 nights in a traditional Family Alm room located in Haus Petra. This room offers partial views of the Hochkonig and also the hotel's compound. It has a small (hard to access) walk in wardrobe which to us was not functional, but two good sized bedrooms and a cosy lounge. Haus Petra is located further away from the main hotel building hence it was mostly peaceful and quiet during our stay. You do get a lot of families with young children in this hotel but somehow we didn't feel an overwhelming presence of kids conquering the space. We then spent 6 nights in the modern Family Alm room which is more spacious, the kids' bedroom could easily pass off as a normal double bedroom. The bathroom has all the modern fittings and you'll have more storage space than you ever need. The downside is, the modern family room faces the entrance of the hotel, which means you'll have views of the road, a car parking area and a sloping hill. We didn't mind the view but the noise of passing cars was a bit unbearable particularly in the evenings. The all-inclusive package made our stay almost effortless, every day we just needed to eat, hike, spa and sleep, the only decision we needed to make was which appetiser and maincourse to choose from the dinner set menu and also the daily excursions. We also received a generous Euro100 spa voucher per person and it was more than enough to get one or a combination of treatments from the spa. Food quality was a little inconsistent during our stay, sometimes you would get a very substantial lunch buffet but very often you would see the same dessert offered in the previous night's set menu being served again during lunch. Anyhow, we didn't really eat much for lunch, we only enjoyed having a cup of coffee at the restaurant's outdoor terrace overlooking the majestic Hochkonig. Dinner however was always very extensive, we had the occasional sushi buffets , BBQ buffets and dessert buffets in addition to the 5-course set menu. The outdoor swimming pool is very small, it wasn't the best experience during the busy months but if your children are old enough to navigate the outdoor natural pools alone, they will not have to put up with the small shared pool. The spa.... what an exhilaratingly beautiful setting, lots of relaxation areas some with unobstructed views of Hochkonig and some with pool views. There are 3 more relaxation areas or sensory rooms with headphones and fireplace. We had a massage session with one of the therapists, the best we've ever had in Europe, she just knew how to apply the right pressure to the right spots. I could spend hours and hours in the spa area, particularly at the outdoor relaxation area overlooking the mountains, I've been to many scenic places in the world and I can easily rate this as one of the most magnificent sight. The upkeep of this hotel is second to none. You can feel the pride of the family owning this beautiful property; everything is maintained to top notch condition. You could see visible extensions over the years, lots of improvement and upgrading of the spa area and the kids' club. The kids' club is one of the best we've ever seen, and we've stayed in many children friendly hotels, including leading family and kids hotels. However the attendants in the kids' club were not as proactive as we expected. Twice we found our little boy drenched in damp clothing and was shivering because he fell into the stream in the kids' club. Prior to leaving him at the kids' club, we handed over a bag of spare clothes just in case he got messy but the attendant did not help him to change. One can never feel bored in this resort, and if so, there is plenty to see or do in the nearby Maria Alm and Saalfelden. Everywhere you look is beauty and you can never get enough of the majestic Hochkonig scenery.

Just as wonderful in summer as in winter

We've already stayed at the Ubergossene Alm a couple of times for ski holidays for which it is absolutely first rate (25 metres from nearest lift and ski school in a superb and extensive ski resort), but we thought we'd try it out in summer as well with a short 3-night break. The hotel did not disappoint. The staff were all the same friendly and familiar faces as from our previous 2 stays, which for me is a good sign. It's also nice to be "welcomed back" and makes the hotel feel like a home away from home. Hotel reception was as friendly and helpful as always - nothing is too much hassle for them (i.e. me requesting a stiffer mattress (I've turned into my parents - oh well), advice on child-friendly mountain bike trails, etc.). On our winter visits we've often looked out from within the Kinderalm (amazing, extensive kids' area - there may be a better one somewhere, but we haven't encountered it yet) and wondered what the outside area is like underneath the blanket of snow. The answer is beautiful landscaped gardens with loads of fun activities for kids and parents alike. The most fun has got to be the "glacier stream", which can be dammed or redirected at various points, has water wheels, etc. There's also a small obstacle course, various swings, a zip line. Swimming-wise there's a conventional pool and 2 swimming ponds (1 heated) with very clear water. In the region there's loads of activities for sporting types (e-bikes can be rented directly from hotel). A massage was included in our package, which I was happy to accept over my wife. Very good is was too. Spa area is very well-appointed with loads of choice, but I didn't get much chance to check it out further on account of our young children. We are a family of 6 and the combination of Alm Suite and Alm Comfort room with interconnecting door was perfect for us, still affording us plenty of space. Food was good, as was the wine selection, with enough choice also for vegetarians (vegans might struggle a little, but I'm sure the chef would rustle something up for you). The bar was pleasantly lively after dinner, with lots of families playing board games. For teenagers there's a "chill area" with computer consoles, etc. to mope in. All-in-all the hotel is equally attractive to visit in the summer as in the ski season. But it's the convivial atmosphere and friendly staff that make the hotel the great place that it is. Our next ski holiday is already booked!
