Lovely room and staff, good location with a car.

OK, there are 28 steps to the front door but our room was lovely. It was at the back of the hotel facing onto the street and the downside was that there was a lot of traffic noise which started from 6am and got steadily noisier. Perhaps avoid that side of the B&B but still go for the ground floor to avoid more steps! There was a lovely Lithuanian receptionist who not only sorted us out with places to see but also carried one of our bags in a herculean effort way beyond what was required but much appreciated. She was lovely! The room and bathroom was well appointed with comfortable beds, tea/coffee (fresh milk in the fridge), iron and board, good shower though the towels could have been larger. Breakfast was down the hill in the sister establishment next door. The hotel is on a steep hill and although you could walk into town, we took the car into a town car park and walked from there to the Cataract Gorge. We dined well at Stillwater but book it when you book accommodation as it gets very busy apparently. Nice place, wed go back.

    A Night Away

Thought that we would like to try somewhere different to stay, so decided to give Waratah on York a go. We booked an Executive Suite cause we looked on line to see what the rooms looked like and decided this had a nice feel and a view over the City. Unfortunately we did not get the same suite as we had viewed, the room was still nice but very noisy with traffic outside our window, no view and quite cold with a draught under the door. Would prefer there other property Hideaway on George.

Colonial sleeping with outside view and good service.

S41°26'01.3" E147°08'45.0" During our survey of Launceston hotels, reviewers noted many had issues with cleanliness, odours, stains, uncomfortable beds, maintenance, staff posture and noise. The Waratah on York offered good value for money and had few problems (steep street, outside noise and squeaking floors). The Waratah on York is in the eastern steepy part of Launceston and offers great view of the city if your room is facing north. There are many stairs to the hotel from the parking lot and the hotel has no elevator. Quite a challenge for the physically impaired guests. In February of 2020, we slept in room 5, a favourite for the view, in the upper right corner of the Waratah. This is a large suite with a double bed and a living area with not-functional wood-burning stove in colonial style. It has a desk, television, air conditioning and excellent Wi-Fi reception. The porch had a jacuzzi and a lounge area. We did not use this odd combination. Room 5 has a great view over Launceston, although a pine tree blocks part of the view. The bathroom had a double shower with hairdryer and bathroom heat lamps. The room was clean, although the cleaning of the shower could be done better. Maintenance in an old building is always a challenge, curtains showed their age, window frames needed to be repainted and an electric blanket malfunctioned. The sound insulation was good. No problems with the neighbours. We arrived after opening hours of the reception. We were impressed with their after-hours check-in procedure: so clear and effective we have never seen before. There was a backup option for every situation. Continental breakfast was served in the new Areca sister hotel opposite the Waratah with pancakes (nice self-service machine), yoghurt, cereal, bread, juice, coffee and tea. Tasty start of the day. We used e-mail to contact the hotel and booked the room directly without using an internet travel agency with their high fees. We paid for room 5 $180 per night. Staying in an old colonial building has its charms. We loved the view and had a nice stay. If you like a modern hotel, go to its sister hotel across the street.

    A lovely visit

Had the loveliest stay at the Waratah on York recently. A really convenient location to many local bars and restaurants - easy walking distance to and from. The staff member at check-in was so pleasant and welcoming. I stayed in the suite with spa bath overlooking the River and it was absolutely wonderful. Truly relaxing. Room was clean, a really nice size, all the amenities that you could need and a beautiful view. The area where the spa was also had a sort of sunbed/day lounge window setup - perfect for an afternoon nap in the sun! A really quiet area, honestly cannot fault it! If I hadn't just moved to Launceston I'd choose this as my hotel of choice every time.

    Beautiful place to stay

We loved staying at Waratah on York. We had a three bedroom apartment on the second floor with views to the river from the bedrooms. The rooms were large and beautifully furnished. Easy walk to City Park and into the city for dinner. Off street parking is provided. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
