Only room in town, watch out fo r smoking smell in non-smoking rooms!

We stayed for 2 nights and chose the hotel as it was available for our dates over a Sat night and close to the station. Easy to get to, and saw it from the train on the way into the station. We were allocated a high up room initially but it was a bit dated and the smell of smoke was quite strong. We went down to reception and the receptionist escorted us to 3 other rooms on different floors, all of which were apparently non-smoking but smelled of smoke! They did try to help. We ended up with a really lovely room on the second floor, window looked out onto the car park but we were not in the room much. Really happy we persevered. There is a microwave and laundry facilities, a couple of convenience stores close by and easy to walk everywhere. The tourist info at the station were wonderful, so helpful and everything we needed included stories of local folklore about the bunny. Go in and ask! We bought a sightseeing bus ticket for the day to go to the sand dunes. Go early to the bus station as there were so many people in the end. The bus is really easy. We visited the amazing fish and crab market and food market on the way back. We skipped the sand museum but had a wonderful time at the dunes and walked over to walk in in the Sea of Japan. Shame about the plastic on the beach! We went to one of the local public Hinomaru Onsen twice. It was really nice, cheap, a real experience, very hot, you can loan a hairdryer and towels , soap, shampoo etc or take your own along, hang out with locals and is not far from the main street. Reception gave us directions on a map. They tried to tell us about a fancy ryokan but stick with the public onsens. We had a nice steak dinner. Be aware on a Sunday night everything shuts down really early and we ended up grabbing a burger and some beers from the convenience store to eat in our room before Mos burger closed for the night!

    Not Recommended

I do not recommend this hotel. Note: this hotel would not have been my primary choice, but when I booked about six weeks before my trip, I had to use a company approved website, and all rooms within 75 miles were booked, so I was fortunate to get a room at all. Pros: (1) Location. Its very, very close to the train station, just across the street, a two or three minute walk. The proximity to the station makes it easy to get to, even with luggage. There are restaurants, drug stores, convenience stores, etc. within easy walking distance. However, there are at least three other hotels within the same distance of the train station, so this should not be a strong selling point. (2) Coin Washing Machine onsite. A lifesaver if you are traveling for a while. (3) The staff wants to help (but see below) Cons: (1) The rooms are not very clean, they are on the small scale, and they are dated. I was not afraid I would get a disease if I walked around without my shoes on.but I didnt walk around with my shoes off, or sit on the floor, either. (2) The rooms are not soundproofyou will be able to hear everything that happens on the floor. I could hear a conversation from two rooms down, with both sets of doors closed (I went out and checked because I was convinced they group was standing right outside my door). (3) There are non-smoking rooms, but non-smokers will still be able to smell the odor from smoke. (4) There is mold in the bathrooms (a lot of mold), probably due to the sign on the door that you cannot leave the door open while showering or you will set off the fire alarms (thats new and different). (5) The sink is literally in the shower, and the shower turns on from the sink. When I turned the shower on the sink came on too, and the faucet handles leaked every time I turned either on. (6) The toilets dont flush well. (7) The door to the bathroom is strangely elevated, and I stubbed my toes going in and out more than once. (8) They do not have a gym. The only gym nearby is a members only gym. If you need to exercise, you need to head outdoors, which is fine if it's pleasant. (9) They do not have a business center. If you need to scan or copy something, you cant. They were not able to recommend a location with the necessary facilities/equipment. (10) The staff does not speak English well. If you need help with something, you probably wont be able to get it. I recognize that this is Japan, and they are certainly not expected to speak English. Unfortunately, I do not speak Japanese either, and even with Google Translate I was not able to communicate. This is not the hotels fault, but it was an issue for me during my stay. Additionally, most hotel signage, maps and pamphlets were not available in English. Thank goodness for the internet and the Tottori Tourist Support Center (on the other side of the train station). (11) Bring an adapter with you if you don't have the two prong plug mainly used in Japan. The hotel does not have any adapters to loan out. I lost mine between my previous location and Tottori, and I had to walk over to Don Quijote (about a half mile away) to buy another. Bottom Line There are better options out there. If you are a business traveler, need to be able to communicate, or if you need anything other than a small, kind of shabby, not super clean room, try somewhere else.

SUPER hard beds like sleeping on a door

If you like to sleep on something literally like a plank of wood, this is the best hotel for you. Staff was nice and the location to the train station is good. Not an exciting hotel, just a typical small room with no frills. If the price is cheap and that is what you want then this is a good place for you.

The rolling air machine circus and Smoke in your room-guaranteed!

This hotel has one thing going for it. Great location and a great seafood breakfast buffet. It ends there. We encountered three seriously bizarre issues. 1) the room is barely the size of an office cubicle and cost me $250 CDN. Congratulations APA--you exceeded my expectations!! 2) When we checked in on the 11th floor, we found the bathroom wafting with cigarette smoke that persisted all night long. Instead of changing rooms or upgrading for free, we were given a large rolling Panasonic air filtering machine (say, what?). Two trainee staff showed up and rolled it into the room, and provided us with spray bottles to use to lessen the cigarette smoke scent in the air (say, what???). The staff were friendly and apologetic, but it was like a scene from a terrible movie. Stuck in a small, expensive, tobacco filled room all night. 3) My wife finally got 50000yen back from the manager the following morning to make up for our trouble, which was nice. But why bother with the whole rolling air machine circus like above? Just make it right from the beginning or deal with issue (scroll down for past reviews with the same smoke issue from others) So long story short---if you want to pay a lot for a little, and enjoy the smell of cigarette smoke from three floors down wafting through your bathroom--pick this place! OR---search your options more carefully for a nice ryokan or similar. I should have. Woukd NOT recommend this place to anyone. Surprised this place is part of the APA brand,
