  A luxury modern hanok perfectly placed to explore the traditional Bukchon village.

  Pros: This is a truly boutique hotel. The traditional suite is in an annex of its own, whereas the rooms are in a multi-storey building. The suite we booked had both traditional and modern touches. Bathroom had black gold-gilded tiles and a bathtub perfect for a soak after a long day of walking. Location is perfect for exploring the nearby palaces, as well as Bukchon Hanok village - a lovely cluster of traditional houses. Breakfast was limited but sufficient - the al fresco balcony was a bonus! Staff is always friendly and helpful with recommendations. Cons: The additional roll-in bed had a very hard mattress - didn't make for a comfortable sleep. Bathroom is hanok style and we had to throw our used toilet paper into the open bin nearby. You can certainly think of cases where you would NOT want soiled toilet paper in an open bin overnight. But this is a 'necessary evil' - a trade off for staying in a hanok.

  Great cafe attached - cafe racer

  Cafe with room top terrace at the hostel. The cafe is shown in the review as their dining but it is also open to the public. I was there on a warm, sunny October afternoon. The deck has pear tree and lots of tables.

  Great place to stay in the heart of old Seoul but dont expect full service hotel

  This hotel is not for everyone. It is a charming property and very nice staff. But if you stay here, realize it is intended to be a basic place in a former hanok, not really a hotel with all the amenities you expect (restaurant, for example; on Sunday, it was work to find a coffee shop or something open to eat breakfast so I would have appreciated the hotel having at least breakfast). However, it does not lack much, really. The room had temperature control, cable TV, and a full and modern bathroom. What I liked the best was that it is in the heart of the historic Bukchon area, old Seoul. It is a very different feel than the rest of the city. Not knowing what to expect, I didn't want to spend my 5 nights in Seoul there so I had booked myself there for only two nights. That was a good idea as after two days, I was eager to enjoy some of the features of a full hotel (breakfast, lobby area, etc.). But it was definitely a cool place to stay for a night or two and get a totally different feel of Seoul than most visitors get. In summary, knowing what it is supposed to be, it was great. If you go in expecting a full hotel, you may not be satisfied.

  Beautiful hotel in a great location

  Bonum is a lovely hotel in a great location in Seoul right in the heart of the traditional district within walking distance of the main palace complexes. There are however a few limitations. There is no restaurant (although there is a cafe next door) and the front desk is only staffed 8am until 11 pm. We had a smallish room on the first floor with a balcony and thought everything was fine until just after 11pm on the first night when the most horrendous machinery noise started up. We think it must have been air conditioning from another room but of course there was no one at the desk to speak to so we had a very poor first night. When we complained the next day the desk clerk was quick to phone the manager who immediately approved a move to another room which was both bigger and quieter - we were very grateful for such swift action. I would also suggest avoiding the disappointing breakfast offered in dark and depressing Cafe Racer for 10,000won each - you can start your day much better at nearby light and bright Wood and Brick where if you order a sandwich or panini a coffee is just an extra 2,000won.

  Bonum 1957 Hanok Stay Experience

  If you want a traditional experience! This is it! The staff are lovely and the hankok is well maintained. If you see the palace during the day and learn about heated floors, this accomodation is the illustration! The location of the hotel is also well positioned in the charming Bukchon village.
