  Good value, clean apartments in the quiet part of the village

  Obertauern is a post war, purpose built skiing/mountain roadside village at 1700m which has two parts: Up the hill, in the busier centre with shops and bars, and down the hill, which is much quieter but very near the main gondolas that take you up to the top of both sides of the mountains. The Gamsspitzl apartments are situated ' down the hill' in the quiet part. This is good if you want quiet and easy lift access, but not so good if you want 'apres ski' and access to many shops and restaurants. As they are self catering apartments, its a real trek to/from the only minimarket (Spar) for provisions, unless you have a car. The village taxis are a complete rip off - 12 euros for a two minute ride!! There are ski buses though. The apartments are family owned and staff are most helpful - they arranged excursions for us, gave good advice and even have their own minibus that can transfer you to and from the airport (Salzburg) at a cost much less than the commercial taxis. The apartments are clean with good bedding and have adequate kitchen facilities. Ours even had a small dishwasher. Most have a small balcony and all of course have good double glazing to keep out the cold! In fact, one niggle was that you cannot turn off or adjust the heating in the apartments at night. No restaurant as such, but offers a breakfast option and free after ski 'coffee and cake'. All in all, a good apartment choice at good value in a quiet area.

  Great service and value for money

  We spent one week of our summer holiday here. From our apartment balcony we had a gorgeous view to the mountains. The apartment itself is simple but well functioning. We bought a package with full catering. The breakfast is very good and served in a cosy room. After breakfast we made lunch packages for the day trip and this worked great with small juices. Dinner was at the hotel 300 meters away. This was not gourmet but good basic food. The service at both the hotel was extremely good with friendly staff always ready to help. With start and finish in Obertauern there are numerous walking/biking tracks. As a family of four with teens we are not hiking profs but we all enjoyed the area! Some days we had rain in our area but just one hours drive south to Ossiacher See took us to sun, hiking and bathing. Another great experience was Therme Amade with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas etc. This was our first summer holiday in Austria and we enjoyed it very very much!

  Fish is not an animal?

  Not a very veteterian or vegan friendly place. On the menu of vegeterian pizzas there is one with tuna on the list. When asked bartender "why??", he replied "fish is not a meat" and stormed away. Not a very educated reply. As a vegeterian, I found it to insult my intelect also.

  Catastrophic

  This place looks like its about to fall apart and I dont think anyone would mind if it did. There was no heating at all, at breakfast there was almost no selection of food whatsoever and the rooms where so poorly made that you could hear every single word on the corridor that was spoken in the rooms. Honestly I would rather sleep in a an Igloo then in Hotel Gamsspitzl!

  Lovely place with attentive staff

  We had a very pleasant stay in an apartment here. Very clean and very warm. Adequate cooking utensils. Dish washer also provided. Spacious bathroom. About 20 mins walk to supermarket but it's such a beautiful village, it was always a pleasure to be out in the snow so we didn't mind the walk. Best part of walk is downhill on the way back. Ski hire next door in Sam's is better value than Intersport accross the road and Sams is a local family enterprise. I would recommend this place and will be back. Ski lift less than 5 mins away.
