    Espectacular!

    Consistently Inconsistent

We wrote most of this review after day 9 out of a 12 day stay in JW Marriott Chongqing, China. We are a small family of three and we are used to a consistent level of service when away from home. Plenty of research goes into our well planned holidays and inevitably we are fortunate to be able to stay in nice hotels and have stayed in 5 star accommodation throughout the world. We see feedback as having three benefits, one a chance to express, two, a chance for others wishing to stay to have a fair representation of the hotel along with its good and bad points and thirdly, a lot can be gained from the hotel in improving upon such feedback and prospective travellers are able to make their own minds whether they wish to stay following their response to that feedback. Is feedback empathetic, individualistic and genuine, rather than a generic cut and paste? We had an early flight and arrived at about 8.30 am. A few days before the hotel sent us an email and asked if we had any requests. An early check in was organised and as promised, we appreciated early access to our room. We booked an executive suite and were allocated a room on the ninth floor. This provided us with executive lounge facilities on the 28th floor. The room is spacious, plenty of storage space, two main televisions, comfortable 2 person sofa (not a sofa bed) and a single armchair, a spacious desk. The bathroom compromises of a walk-in shower with two showerheads, a bathtub, toilet and a sink. The second smaller bathroom has a sink and toilet. The sleeping area has a large king size bed, bearing in mind there is three of us and our child is five; sleeping arrangements were somewhat cosy. At this point, it wouldve been nice to have an option of separate sofa bed for us to use. It is the first time after choosing the largest room in hotel we have had to share a bed and not had a second bed as standard. For families that have two children, I do wonder how you would manage? Breakfast has a good array of options from both East and West. I would say 70% satisfies the East and 30% the West. Pastries and juices near the entrance, the centre of the dining area has a small selection of cold meats and cereals, there are also self-service food, but the quality and warmth of the food is hit and miss. If you are fortunate, to pick your food when it comes from the kitchen, your food will be warm enough, if, and this is more likely, that it has been sat there for a while, it wont be even luke warm; so this will be the dim sum, the baked beans, sausages, rice, noodles, spring rolls, youtiao etc. The fruit choice at breakfast is limited to two melon choices, grapes, dragon fruit, pomelo, longan and small oranges. We are lacking the normal basic apples, bananas, kiwi, pears and sliced oranges expected at quality breakfasts. There are stations where there is food cooked to order and hot, but be prepared to wait. What I find most unacceptable was the lack of dynamism and attention to waiting customers asking for something as simple as over easy fried eggs. From the time of asking, it took ten minutes for this to be brought over. During those ten minutes, I was told to go over and collect well done eggs in the self service area; we had Frank Zhang intervene to speed up the process, his hastiness peaked when he learned I was in fact timing the whole process on my phone. Frank does try hard to please everybody and I dont doubt his dedication to his job; he has a lot to commit to and sometimes over promising (i.e the notion - we will make sure we cook your eggs straight away when you arrive) means he relies on staff to share his passion for his job, but through delegation the promises may/have not always be delivered. In turn, you transition between feeling important, to wondering if you were that important at all. The executive lounge provides a nice, quiet area to relax with drinks and snacks. The food is replenished often and the warmth is slightly better than in the breakfast restaurant. The staff here are generally attentive and pleasant. We did ask for yoghurt on one evening occasion for our five year old and were told that this was only available at breakfast. One of the nights we decided to try the Dim Sum Man Ho restaurant which has unlimited Dim Sum at a reasonable price of 118 RMB. There was slight confusion with the tick box system as to how to convey the portions for a group order. Our party of five placed the relevant ticks, but the restaurant needed to double check the specific sizes of each item we ordered. This proved to be a slightly messy system; probably better if the ticks where replaced with numbers and this being clear at the start. One waitress made it clear than my child had to be under 1.2m tall and that he would be measured accordingly, although, this did not happen at any point. The quality of the food was fine, the portions were somewhat inconsistent due to the clarity of the ordering. However, the biggest disappointment was that four items did not arrive, so one must question the how they check over the orders to ensure this doesnt happen. Once alerted, they were apologetic and the food did arrive, but we were warned then 5 minutes later, by another member of staff that it was close to closing and that we should place our final orders if we needed to. Therefore staff, and there are many, seemed to work as individuals, rather than collaboratively with any cohesion. Oh, another point, the tea was topped up by waitresses and more often than not top up teapot was only luke warm. The cleaners that attend to the rooms are efficient; towel, water and toiletries supplies are replenished with consistency. Requests for more water for the room were not met with any resistance. Times for cleaning are a problem worldwide, although there wasnt a sign you could place outside the room with the obligatory Please make up the room. On a number of occasions, we did inform reception that the room was free to clean and I am please to say, that the room was indeed cleaned when we got back. Our trip to the pool was met with most puzzling experience, which has inadvertently knitted all the elements of this review so far to give some balanced feedback. We were greeted by two members of staff (one a young gentleman, Bill) and were told that swimming caps had to be worn. This is not the first time I have been asked to wear a cap, my five year old was also asked to wear one. However, one must understand, that a rule so important, would it be better if this item were to be provided along with the usual robes, footwear, towels and locker keys? Every single spa, I have visited has a similar system, to the one mentioned in place, and I hope this comes under consideration. Instead, your approach here, was to ask us to purchase two swimming caps one for myself and one for my son at 68 RMB each before allowing us entry. The problem here is not the cost but the underlying principle behind the request without seeking our requirements. It turned out that my son was quite happy paddling in the small thermal pool and the adjoining cold pool. None of the people going into this small pool wore swimming caps; in fact they wore nothing at all..(!) Therefore, we only visited the main pool briefly to dip our toes in the water, as my son was worried about the depth of the pool and we soon retreated to the thermal pool, where he was quite happy. At times, we have requested staff assistance such as adjustment to the temperature of the room and also heating of food purchased outside the hotel. These were dealt with well, and credit to Clara here for her kind help, although understandably, the latter needed to have the relevant consent forms sign for hotel exoneration. We have found staff interactions on a whole to be mixed. As mentioned, the executive lounge staff are pleasant and attentive. Bill at the front desk at the pool shouldve asked about our requirements rather than sell us two swimming caps. A possible small tour of the facilities would have allowed a conversation to develop and allowed a more personal touch to proceedings. Instead, I was led to believe no swimming cap = no entry. My wife spoke to Olive Wang to try and explain the situation regarding the pool entry and she found the interaction with her frustrating and non-progressive. Frank Zhang in the restaurant did his encourage he attentiveness of the chef - Willy (reminder all the latter needed to do was fry two eggs!) and it wasnt even busy. Delia Che (also in the breakfast restaurant) was apologetic and we felt like we were being listened to and she managed to organise a meeting with Adele Wang where I was able to convey feedback to her in English. I found Adele pleasant and she appreciated the feedback given. She managed to arrange a refund, brought it to our room for the swimming caps, and certainly did more for us than Olive Wang and Bill (Liu Xun Zhe) and we really appreciate Adeles efforts. The above was sent over to Front Operations Manager, Eddie Shi and within a day he wrote back appreciating the feedback via email. He also met us after breakfast for an informal chat and advised that the email had been discussed with others and that moving forward, they would make alterations to the protocol for swimming pool guests. We found him pleasant to deal with. For the rest of the stay the experience had improved, we received a mini fruit package delivered to the room with a New Years message, Frank and Sara made sure eggs were cooked on our arrival. However, on a day that Frank and Sara wasnt there, we were greeted at breakfast by Danny, she confirmed our usual order, but instead decided to shortcut the request and pick ones that looked remotely like over easy eggs from the well done eggs batch which were cooked before we arrived. This somewhat lazy gesture was a disappointment and my wife confronted Danny and she confirmed this. We took this no further, so I will let the readership have their own opinion given all that happened. Myself and Eddies path crossed again as I requested a late check out due to our party not needing to leave the hotel until 10 pm. He managed to organise a late check out for 6pm, which was appreciated. He did advise that he would communicate that across to the necessary personnel, although this was promised, our room cards stopped working from 2pm. He apologised for this oversight, but all things considered, I had half expected this to happen. Eddie was also kind enough to help phone our hotel transfer company to ensure that the pick-up times were correct and he also gave my five year old son a soft toy as a going way souvenir. With all things considered, it would be difficult to recommend the hotel, but it is encouraging that certain staff members want to improve and be helpful, but this is let down by inconsistencies in service and communication. The hotel would no doubt benefit from looking at the bigger picture; putting themselves in their clients shoes and application of common sense needs to be prevalent in all departments. It is difficult to place a score that is in line with the average mean score, as it fell below expectations. Placing a score high score would place question marks on the integrity of the reviewer. As mentioned at the start, I hope those that have taken time to read this honest review find the feedback useful and informative.

    Top cuisine

Location is right in the center, the rooms are typical JW style, roomy, cosy and top equipped. The power outlets should be updated. The cuisine (selection, quantity and quality) of food in the restaurant is simply fantastic and extremely delicious Friendly and professional hotel staff. Nice hotel...

Nice room but service needs improvement

Overall I would like to rate JW Marriott for 4. Location of JW Marriott is great if you want to exeprience the old style of Chongqing city. Many famous places are within walking distance. The room I stayed was well maintained and with nice city view. The hardware was in good condition. There were fewer international channels you would expect to watch comparing with hotels at the same grade. The breakfast was good with plenty of choices of foods but I couldn't say it was very impressive because you natually wanted more from a JW Marriott. Apparently they were better at making Chinese cuisine. Unfortunately staff at the the Cafe were busy doing something else and nobody cared to ask you what you wanted to drink and when you asked for coffee, they brought you coffee but no milk. You had to pile your plates and bowls because nobody cleaned the table promptly. This was definately not five star experience. Staff needed more training.
