  Great escape, a fine example of relaxation...Japanese style.

  This ryokan is in an beautiful setting in a valley along a river in Wakayama prefecture. We stayed there in late October and the trees were already a variety of colours, making some beautiful pictures. The hotel has a nice buffet restaurant, a small store with gifts, candies, beer, and café with, snack food, beverages, ice cream, etc. The hotel is nicely decorated and features some fantastic chainsaw art. Hotel staff were generally friendly and helpful. The stay was a good value, and costed about Y11,000 per person, which included full use of the onsen hot spring during our stay, the room, and two meals (dinner and breakfast), and our discounted karaoke bar bill. The rooms are clean and slept well. If you are comfortable with futons, you will not have a problem. The rooms do get a little chilly at night. As long as you're prepared for this you will not mind. It is quite common to bundle up (or snuggle up) at ryokans. There was a Japanese style table, a small TV, and very nice views of the valley and river. The buffets in the restaurant were good quality. All the dishes were fresh and they had a good variety of primarily Japanese dishes. They had a good selection of sushi at dinner. I was pleased to some western breakfast items as I can grow tired of Japanese breakfasts. The true gem of this place are the hot spring baths. The outdoor bath is very nicely set...it is set in beautiful stone and is surrounded by a bamboo fence. The indoor bath is just a nicely finished in stone and accented by wood panels. The water is apparently good for your skin. It is a very nice and relaxing setting. The temperature was quite hot...I'd say at least 42...but I can't confirm. The changing rooms were clean and had nice amenties like lockers, combs, and hair dryers available. Overall the hot springs were A+! The only drawbacks of this place are its location and the lackluster rooms. It is quite the hike from Osaka (2+/- hour drive) and I haven't the slightest clue how long by train or bus. And the rooms were comfortable, but I think they could do more if they tried (nicer TV, more art) And stay clear of the karaoke bar...it's over priced and the hostess (mama) is a little disingenuous. Although the price per song is fair (about Y200), there are no prices listed for drinks and they ended up costing over Y1000 each, one of which was non-alcoholic. We discussed the matter with hotel staff the next day who agreed to discount our bill. (arigatou!) Aside from the hostess, the staff was good.

  Lovely place to stay

  This hotel is very well appointed with some interesting features - local furniture, a small display of local artists. It has a very good dining room and excellent bath - inside and outside. We were there with the cherry blossom - spectacular! The staff were great. Some interesting morning walks along the river. wifi in lobby not in rooms

  Traditional Japanese accomodation in a Hotel Look

  Quite a large Hotel like accomodation if you can look beyond the shared bath facilities. The dining room for breakfast and dinner is superb with added treats like ice cream, cakes and coffee. Very hospitable with all staff respectful of their guests.

  Great Onsen Experience

  Very enjoyable stay at Kirari Ryujin. The pinewood theme, featuring local art work is inviting. The Onsen is the feature. With indoor and outdoor bath area facing the beautiful landscape, it is total relaxation. The change rooms are very clean and well kept. The massage chairs at the entrance is a good wrap to the onsen. The food buffet is pretty good, although, lacked on selection. This hotel caters mostly for local tourists and see few foreign tourist coming into the area. The staff aren't fully conversant in English but takes all attempt to understand and aim to please the guests. They were friendly, respectful and helpful. This hotel have definitely changed our onsen experience and would love to make a return trip one day.
