    Great decor/experience with some misses

First the positives: Polite and helpful staff. Super clean premises, attractive design and extremely straightforward layout - easy to find the elevator and your room. The room has a fold out couch that can convert into a bed. The shower seemed high quality with overhead and handheld shower heads. USB ports all around the room make it easy to charge your phone and other electronic devices. Signing into the complimentary wifi was a breeze. Room fridgs kept beverages frosty and the air conditioning maintained the temperature perfectly. The hotel was pretty booked for various events, but we didn't hear any sound from neighboring rooms whatsoever. The elevators limit access to floors other than 6 (bar floor) to people who have room keys. Neutral: On-site parking was sold out, but it was only $10 for overnight parking a block away, so not so bad. Shower only - no bathtub. Not so great: Iowa doesn't require masks, so staff is inconsistent about wearing them. Front desk and cleaning staff were not wearing masks, but bar staff and on day two the front desk person did. On July 11th, they offered complimentary muffins and milk, but the milk said "best by July 8th" on the cartons. The bed was on the very firm side to the point of being uncomfortable as a side sleeper. The elevators seemed to be extremely slow even at non-peak usage times. In the morning (high-traffic time) we just gave up and used the stairs.

    Questioning the cleanliness here!

When I made the reservation, I requested a high corner room with a nice city view with 2 beds. What we received was a room on the second floor with no view and a pull out sofa bed with no linens. When I called the front desk to request another room with 2 beds, we were told they had none. Extra bedding was supposed to be in the closet but wasnt so front desk delivered them. When I got ready for bed, I pulled the sheets off of the bed and found a hair! I was shocked and disgusted and this made us question the cleanliness of the whole room!! Underground parking was secured but cost $18. Toiletries were too strong in fragrance especially the shower gel....not meant for women. Overall, this hotel was not worth the price we paid. I wish I had booked elsewhere with free parking!

    Wedding

DO NOT book your wedding night here when wedding in Des Moines. They will charge you for a package and not even give you roses or champagne. Nothing but a bare room. No room service. No amenities. If you call, they will tell you to go to the store. WORST SERVICE WE HAVE EVER RECEIVED-ON OUR WEDDING NIGHT. 0/10 stars do not recommend. Absolutely horrible and Rude - never left a review in my life, just never want anyone else to EVER experience anything like this. DO NOT BOOK HERE FOR ANYTHING.

Nice hotel in Trendy East Village

I frequent the Marriott brands and this is a nice boutique hotel located in the trendy East Village that is within walking distance to the active and Historic Court District. Immediately around the hotel, the East Village offers plenty of boutique shopping and restaurants as well as the Principal River Walk, Meredith Trail and the John Pat Dorrian Trail for an easy walk, bike or run. Yes, on-site parking is $18, but street parking is free overnight and plenty was available. We stayed here in late September and all staff member we encountered were wearing a mask. An inviting and spacious lobby and sitting area has a pool table and small bar for hanging out for the night or something to do before going somewhere else for dinner. We were given a room with a nice view looking onto Grand Avenue and because it is only a 5 story hotel, the stairs were perfectly suited for an easy walk to our room, no elevator is necessary. It also features a little market if you have a craving as well as a wine opener if you wish to have a nightcap with your own bottle of wine. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the only two negatives was the price of parking (which I didn't use) and the TV does swivel out from the wall. So watching TV while sitting on the couch is a little difficult.

    Subpar at best

I stayed at your property with my wife this past weekend 2/13-2/14 to celebrate Valentine's Day. Let me start by saying that I'm a Des Moines native and have enjoyed the AC a number of times, even put many out-of-town guests up at the AC. I have always enjoyed my experience; until my most recent visit, that is. My most recent experience was subpar, at best; approaching unacceptable. The Facility: The AC Hotel had always impressed me with its cleanliness and attention to detail. During my most recent stay, however, it was clear that attention to detail was virtually non-existent. In the midst of a global pandemic, I was hopeful that the cleanliness and protection of its guest would have been at the forefront of the hotel's agenda. This was not the case, however. During check-in, there were at least 20 people crowded in the front lobby (1/2 of whom were not wearing masks) with no attempt by the Marriott staff to encourage or facilitate social distancing. In terms of cleanliness over my 24-hour stay, the front lobby was never cleaned, the elevators were trashed and guests without masks were going up and down the elevator to go to the rooftop bar. Not once, did I witness a Marriott staff member ask a guest to wear a mask. Public trashcans were overflowing with garbage by 9:00 am on Sunday morning when we left. The Service: I called the front desk after getting to our room as the ice machine on our floor (6th floor) appeared to be out of order. I was inquiring about someone bringing some ice up or if there was a machine somewhere else. The response I got was, "Sir, you're going to have to get it yourself. We're too busy up here." And then they hung up. I went down to the lobby in search of ice, only to have another guest inform me they were staying on the 5th floor and their machine worked. The second experience was about an hour into our stay, the phone rang in our room. I answered it and it was the front desk, asking if I needed something. I politely said, "no" and hung up. An hour later it rang again, and an hour later, it rang a third time where I had to politely request they stop calling my room. These persistent interruptions were annoying at best. The third strange experience was about 2 hours into our stay there was a knock at the door with someone stating they were from guest services. I went to the door and used the peephole to see someone outside our door with no discernable Marriott clothing or uniform. We ignored them and I think they went away. Then, again around 10:00 pm, there was ANOTHER aggressive knock at the door with someone stating they were from guest services. I snuck to the door again to view who was outside our door and it was a different person - again with no Marriott clothing or uniform. I shouted for them to go away and once they were gone I hung the Do Not Disturb sign on our door. We were both extremely uncomfortable with this entire exchange. The Room: I stayed in room 601, a king suite. We stayed in a suite one other time at the property and thoroughly enjoyed it. This was an altogether different experience, however. The room was weird, at best. The longer we look around, the more we realized the subpar nature of the room. Upon entering the room had a very strange layout, it could have been the furniture arrangement or the lack of carpet but the echo-chamber was something we never got used to during the stay. There was also just a lack of detail from the TV cords being unplugged and hanging down the wall (I fixed them myself), to the broken toilet. And then, much like the public spaces, there was this issue of cleanliness. There was some kind of mystery stain or spill all along the wall next to the toilet. There were some spots on the tile floor with sandy grit on them. And then my wife pointed out that I shouldn't sit on the chairs in the "dining area" as they too had some kind of mystery stain on them (photos attached). Once we went to bed, I had one of the worst night's sleep I've ever had. The bed was so hard, I almost considered getting up and sleeping on the vinyl couch. The refrigerator also emitted a bright light that lit up half the room and the room vent was right next to the bed making a loud noise all night. We hardly slept. If all of that wasn't enough, we were awoken by some kind of loud (and I mean loud) banging from somewhere near our room. I got out of bed to see if there was construction happening out on the street but it was coming from above our room or somewhere down the hall. It persisted at about 20-minute intervals for the duration of the morning. With the $500.00 I spent for a relaxing night away, all we wanted to do was get home. I regret spending my time and resources on this experience. It's unfortunate, that I'll have to find another local facility for future stays.
