The Abir - both yes and no.

I am just back from two weeks at the ABIR in Djerba. Apart from Djerba itself being a great disappointment - who says it is a BEAUTIFUL island? - the ABIR was very much what I had expected: a reasonable holiday hotel. The complex is a U-shaped structure around a very nice garden and pool area, which is kept in the best of ways. However, here seems be a shortage of sunbeds when the place is fully booked, and even fewer sunbed matresses. The pool is large and impeccably kept. There is also a so-called "Bar-B-Que" garden pavillion serving drinks and snacks however, mostly frequented by the All-Inclusive guests, who seem to dominate the hotel. Lots of Norwegians, French and Poles... and a few Danes and a couple of Swedes. There are 4 floors - no elevartor - of which the ground floor must be avoided at all costs. A heavy smell of mildrew prevails... Further up the rooms are OK - most with twin beds plus an extra bed, a smallish bacony and a very nice and impreccably kept bathroom. Cleanliness prevails all over the place (except maybe in the dining room, where the plates have a filmy surface that has to be polished away before you eat). A few rooms have a very small and straight out claustrophobic mini-balcony, that can hardly hold two people... There is aircon in certain periods. Fridges may be hired at the hefty price if 10 Dinars (good 5) a day, as well as TV, if you really must have one. Nice shower gel and shampoo bottles await you in the very clean bathrooms. The restaurant is large and noisy, and everything is buffet style. The staff is friendly and forthcoming, but untrained and the large overview is missing. Breakfast is OK if you do not expect too much, but apart from the standard line-up of "the same things every day" they have a cook coming up with daily specialities - excellent crèpes/pancakes, omelets, fried eggs etc. Dinner is a rather so-so affair - again more or less the same dishes everyday. But go for the soups! They are no less than excellent, and can make it up for a meal in itself. Wines? Forget it - Tunisia do produce wines, but most people find them undrinkable. You are hereby warned! And please bear in mind - there are few, if any, alternatives. There are a couple of restaurants nearby, but of the kind you only visit once, so you end up eating most of your meals at the hotel any way. All in all the ABIR is a nice place that fits the price tag beautifully. However, no paradise without a snake - the "entertainment"! They emply a bunch of friendly young medn - the so-called "animateurs" - who stubbornly try to activate you poolside, whether you want it or not, during the day. Everey night they set up a show of varying, and sometimes dubious, quality. That is all OK, were is not for the level of noise, which at times is unbearable. Spending hours poolside listening to hard-core and high-pitch dunk-dunke-dunk "music" can drive anyone mad, and when this terror continues at night until midnight or so, the fun is not so fun. So no wonder a lot of hotel guests meander off to the nearby 4-star Hotel Isis, which offers, at least, a civiized noise level. Most peole would prefer a room with a view - the pool area, for example - but, please, do me the favour of asking for a room to the back, and survive! The ABIR is no beach-front hotel - in fact, the beach is a small 15-minute walk away, and is in itself not very attractive. Tacky, dirty - you have it. If you must go there, and you do not want to walk, the hotel has a free horse-and-wagon service every hour. A week at the ABIR is by all means OK, but no more. The hotel is OK, but the surroundnings are not. No beach promenade, no nothing - only a few dusty so-called "supermarkets" selling tired sunglasses and pale postcards and colorful pottery. Otherwise there is nothing. In my personal opinion Djerba, as marketed, is a regular rip-off - not coming anywhere near Sousse or Hammamet when we talk about Tunisia.

    Poor experience F- .

Bar one or two friendly staff, we have nothing pleasant to say about this hotel, we stayed 1 full day before checking out and in to another resort. Food is questionable to say the least, general cleanliness appalling and rooms are suffering from neglect and not up to the standard we would expect. We saw no animation (activities) at all and what facilities exist are not ones we would choose to use. Smoking is rife through out the hotel and the over aroma is most distasteful (even for smokers). I would seriously consider long and hard before booking this hotel, Also please note we believe this hotel may have a numbers of names

    Bad experience

I booked 7 nights half board but when I got there I was shocked. Dirty and full of drunks. There no half board option and only one meal choice. Hotel was full of prostitutes and very loud music was inside hotel till 1am. Please avoid this horrible place.

    Feel Djerba :-)

We stayed at this hotel in September 2004. The poolview rom was ok, the hotel and food as well. We had a short walk to the beach, which was ok. Just across the road there was a small shop (we went there for bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth). The stuff was nice and polite. Nothing to complain. :-)
