  M thought it was good enough. T disagreed (she always wins). Both agree that it isn't worth the 4.5 current Tripadvisor

  M would give this a 3 star review but T insists on a 2. Overall probably a 2.5. We wanted somewhere cheap to sleep, At £70 it wasn't too bad. Overall the place is run down and threadbare at the edges. Lots of cracks and 20 year old décor and fittings. The bed linen and towels were clean. The carpet wasn't. The bed firm but the room was quiet and we did definitely get a good night's sleep. T complains that she had to check 6 breakfast bowls before finding a clean one. The breakfast was okay. If you just want somewhere to sleep, this is fine. Based on the breakfast we wouldn't recommend eating here. However, we did have a pub meal in the Losset Inn and it was excellent, so well worth a visit!!

  Dreadful experience, no management.

  Stayed here for a golf week in the area but never again. Towel rail in bathroom broken and left lying on the floor. In the shower there was some soap obviously used by the previous occupant. The furnishings are really dated and very worn. No welcome at reception just someone behind the bar. Some of the corridor lights dont work leaving it dark and a safety issue. The following morning the room wasnt hoovered the shower and sink werent cleaned. Waste bin in bathroom not emptied. Towel rail still not fixed. No dressing table, no mirror with an electrical socket for hairdryer. Shower mat just left lying on the floor. A curtain had started to come off the rail but not fixed in the 6 days we were there. Only after I complained was the room hoovered and bathroom cleaned but never again in the following 5 days. The carpet in the bedroom was so dirty you couldnt walk around in bare feet. The girls serving breakfast were very friendly and helpful but there was no management or supervision of any staff. The cooked breakfast was good but apart from that very little choice. No fruit, yogurt, or bakery items other than toast and it was orange juice or nothing. Some girls made filter coffee others just put a pot on the table. When other guests complained the owner, who was the chef, didnt want to know. Dinner menu very limited so we ate elsewhere in the evenings.

  Excellent

  Small town hotels can go one of two ways, bit crap or a treasure. The Alyth Hotel is a real treasure. Great food, lovely setting and charming staff. A hotel that is punching above its weight. Interesting menu laced with quality. Well done.

  Restaurant experience

  I must say what a good experience this was. Im a restaurant manager and Im in the trade also. Came in as a table of 3 and each had a 3 course meal. There was a quiz going on at the same time and this did not ruin our evening In the slightest. Unfortunately the rib eye wasnt available but a rump was offered instead and my mum said it was cooked to perfection. My dad had fish and chips. And I had the enchiladas brilliant portion sizes. All in all good decor and good service. Well done alyth hotel as I understand it is new owners. Only marking down due to my dad saying some of his chips were blanched instead of triple cooked and rendered soggy.

  Unexpected pleasure

  We were celebrating my partners 60th birthday and had booked a lodge a few miles away and had decided to stop here for dinner on the way, it was new owners and the menu offered two main meals for £15 which is pretty good value for a hotel, there were 4 of us, we had one soup and a sharing platter for the other three to start, this was amazing and very filling, for our mains we had two fish, one macncheese and a spicy chicken burger, this took a while to arrive as they were short in the kitchen (as it turned out a good thing), this was making us late for the lodge. I rang the lodge to explain we were going to be late only to be told they had no record of our booking! When Stuart the manager came to apologise for dinner being delayed we asked about the possibility of two rooms for the night as we didnt want to return to Glasgow in the pitch black, he sorted out two rooms for us and explained they had a nice outdoor bar area which was under cover and had a big log fire so we could have a little celebratory birthday drink, long story short we ended up staying for 4 nights (our original intention at the lodge), Stuart, Lewis and the team made us feel very special and bent over backwards to make our stay special, we will definitely be back in future as Alyth itself is a lovely village with lots of walks and other things to do, the rooms are all in the process of being refurbished, the two rooms we had were next door to each at the front of the hotel overlooking the burn and bridge to the village square, the showers were fantastic and a good size as were the rooms, what could have been a spoiled few days away were rescued and my partner was very, very happy with her birthday trip away.
