    Nice Hotel, good services

    Birthday Treat during COVID 19

Very warm welcome and we were given a free upgrade to delux suite which was lovely touch. We live close by and was booked I. St Andrews. We were booked for dinner in Orangery and we opted for festive menu. This was fantastic and 5ge food was excellent. As was our breakfast top marks xx However there a few nibbles we were parked in disabled spaces for parking great, but this section was all flooded which is not ideal at all. Breakfast time was either 7 am or 8.15am which is very early for a Sunday morning. We were in rnoom 209 which was large, we stay in hotels a lot and this is. Top hotel so I dont expect the bed to be 2 singles joined together as you have the line down the middle which you avoid as not comfy. There was no fridge which I expect for 4*. The room was dark as the lighting is for mood but at dressing table to dry you hair even though 2 lights on it was really dar to dry you hair and see hothead mirror. The other nibble was not a full length mirror so if this is used for wedding guests how do you look, there were mirrors in bathroom etc, but not full length. Also the bath had no rail and it was very high I am short so did not go in bath to show as I did not feel safe to get in or out. Picture of flood where disabled car parks

"Yule" be sorry you booked for Christmas!

We booked the Balbirnie Orangery for a Christmas lunch, but were surprised to be taken downstairs to the "Food in the Woods" area and told that the Orangery was not being used that day. We were only informed of this on arrival. This was for a special occasion, however the downstairs area was dark and isolated, and did not feel like we were sitting in a well renowned hotel. We were seated in a tent with no festive feel (besides cheap crackers which didn't crack when pulled), and surrounded by plastic foliage / plants which made it very claustrophobic. The lights strung between the tents also weren't lit as per the photographs (and the overhead lights were on instead) which detracted from the festive feel. The signal is very poor downstairs, so ordering food and drinks on the app was difficult. Although prompt with service, the food unfortunately left much to be desired - we had 5 orders of turkey, which all felt like canteen dinners. The turkey and stuffing were very processed, there were tiny overcooked portions of veg (literally a slice of carrot and 2 sprouts each), and a couple of roast potatoes. None of the food was seasoned in the slightest, and all mocktails were mediocre. Thankfully we decided not to have starters, and said we'd only order desserts after our mains, and so we left without ordering anything else. When asked by the staff how our meal was, we told them of our disappointment in the quality of food, however there was no recourse or feedback from the serving staff or kitchen. Overall, this was not a pleasant experience. We've been going to Balbirnie for years, however we think this will be our last time.

Lack of voucher flexibility during Covid and unprofessional owner

We were gifted a dinner voucher in November 2019. Balbirnie vouchers only come with 6 months until expiry. The voucher was extended for another 6 months until the end of October as a result of Covid. Unfortunately much of this extension period was taken up with further Covid restrictions. We had a reservation booked to use the voucher within this time but we had cancel due to these restrictions. We do not live locally and hoped that Balbirnie would have been flexible in allowing us to use the voucher when we were able to travel. This was not the case. We are aware of other hospitality businesses extending vouchers for significantly longer periods as a result of Covid restrictions. When enquiring about all of this Balbirnie were extremely hard to get hold of. When our query was escalated we got a very rude and unprofessional response from the owner. Having read other reviews it seems we are not the only people to have had this experience with the owner. Unfortunately, due to this experience we will not be visiting Balbirnie again - a place our family have visited a lot.

    Takeaway Pizza and Burger

Decided to use Balbirnie take awsy service as pre lock down they are very good. The takeaway service is a disaster, the service bit is well done ,but the food is awful. The pizza was stone cold , thin to the point of being rock hard, it was covered in greasy cheese, it was predominately cheddar, vile and cheap ingredients , inedible , the vege Burger is awful , not cooked and mushy, the chips were cold. We had to bin it and go elsewhere to eat. Very disappointing as wanted it to be good
