Xmas 2019My brother and I have had a wonderful experience at the Riveria hotel. Everything was excellent and the service and staff was excellent. The room we had was very comfortable and well equipped and even had a small fridge in it,which was very useful. Well done to all the staff and we look forward to staying again in 2020.

You get what you want.Myself and my wife had a free weekend, so decided to do a budget trip to Eastbourne on our bikes. I made the arrangements regarding the route we would take, and I left her to sort the accomodation. She doesn't have the best track record, so whilst I left her to it, I also booked us a plan B. We stayed on a Saturday night, and by the Friday I had been convinced that she had made a wise decision, I went ahead and cancelled the backup hotel. We arrived at around six, and my first impressions were good. The hotel was clean and tidy in all of the communal areas, and the member of staff on reception was extremely helpful - sorting out our keys, giving directions to our room, and allowing us to store our bikes in the safety of the conference room, which I might add was of a good standard. We headed up to our room, quite optimistic that for the money, we had got ourselves a bit of a bargain. We opened the door, stepped into the room, and pissed ourselves laughing. The room was small, and the furniture was dated, some of the lights didn't work. We reminded ourselves that this was a budget stay, we're no prima donnas and that we would be absolutely fine here for the night. I turned on the TV, a blue light came on. I waited a minute, and just as I thought the TV was broken, it sprung into action and I was able to enjoy the weather forecast for the day ahead. We needed a shower and a change of clothes before we headed into town to check out a restaurant that had been recommended to us for an excellent vegan menu. The shower was ok at best, one of those with a hose coming out from the top of a mixer tap, the fixing was on the low side, so it was quite lucky that neither of us is taller than 5'8". The temperature was good, and there was free soap and shampoo/conditioner available, which was good because I had forgotten to pack any. We went out, had a lovely meal, and stopped in the Tesco Express to get ourselves a bottle of wine and some plastic cups to drink it out of. We're not savages, and gulping straight from the bottle is a tiny bit beneath us. The young man who served us at the counter in Tesco seemed troubled. As a matter of course I asked politely how his day had been so far. "Mate, you have no idea", was his reply. He shook our bottle of wine vigorously before placing it in a plastic bag that we neither had asked nor paid for. Back at our room, we decided to test out the bed. It was nice and comfortable, we got naked, and chilled out with our plastic cups of wine and some massage lotion that smelt worryingly like Veet. The soundproofing between rooms could have been better. As we tried to get to sleep we could hear what we first thought were noisy seagulls, but which actually turned out to be our very polite neighbour and a guest he had invited over for some fun. Whilst I didn't have a conversation with him, I could tell he was polite, because once he and his friend had finished having fun he offered to show her out of the hotel, but she replied that she knew her way out, and was a semi-regular visitor. At this point we began to question the type of establishment we were staying in, and we both decided it wise to sleep in our underwear. We slept well, and whilst it was included in the room rate, we decided to forego breakfast and head into town for a livener at Wetherspoons.

Nice hotel in a perfect placeFor a weekend of discovery of the cliffs in south London, we decide to stay for one night in this hotel, sincerely found by chance on the internet. Difficult times these of Covid-19, the locals try to take the measures with the new directives, at our entrance we find everything perfect, the staff with masks, at the check-in a plexiglass panel separates us from the person in charge at the reception. The disinfectant available, one-way routes where it would be difficult to keep your distance. All excellent, the room is normal, not too spacious but more than enough, large bathroom, all very clean. The room was very hot, without air conditioning, and in the night by keeping the window open (at the back of the hotel) we were disturbed by the street noise and the noise of people until late at night. In the morning breakfast is a little more complicated for the protection measures, so there is no buffet, they asked us to indicate a preferred time to avoid crowding and then we were served at the table. All good something was missing to make me give the fifth star of excellence, but I believe that if in these difficult conditions they managed to make us feel good, when, hopefully soon, we will be able to return to normal, I don't doubt they will also be able to do something more. Good value for money.

A mini break in AugustWe booked a last minute 2 night stay in the Riviera Hotel after spending several hours reading the reviews for most of the seafront hotels in Eastbourne. The Riviera was very reasonably priced, situated in a prime location and reviews were mediocre so we thought wed take a chance. On check-in the staff member couldnt have been more welcoming and polite. She provided us with all info that we needed about the hotel as well as details of the parking permits that you can buy from the hotel reception. Parking is quite tricky along the seafront but at only £2 for 24 hours, you dont mind driving up and down a few times to find a space. Hand sanitisers are situated around the hotel foyer as well as a one way system for entrance/exit. The room we booked was very small and old fashioned but extremely clean and contained everything we needed. It was nice to see that post Covid, tea and coffee making facilities are still supplied too. The walls are quite thin between rooms but again, this was a budget priced room so we werent expecting to be staying in the lap of luxury. Bed was quite comfy all be it a bit creaky but was fit for purpose. The main issue we had was the noise at night. As the rooms are quite warm we really needed the window open but the noise from the street was extremely loud and it was unfortunate that someone appeared to be very distressed over something that involved the police arriving and taking him away. The other BIG disturbance was seagulls. Both mornings around 5am we were rudely awakened by the ear piercing screeching from the birds. Im not sure where they were but it sounded like they were in the room with us!! The noise got louder and louder which in turn left us with no choice but to close the window and then you could still hear it a bit. Once the window was shut the room also got very warm and stuffy so it was either a choice of trying to keep out the bird noise or letting some fresh air in -we couldnt win. I want to stress that the noise was in no way any fault of the hotels and they couldnt have done anything about it even if they tried ( aside from installing triple glazing and air con!!) I just feel that people need to be aware that if they stay here they may experience quite disturbed nights sleep. Riviera is a friendly and warm establishment that provides clean accommodation so if you can cope with very dated furniture as well as very vocal wildlife, you could do worse than to book a stay here!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEYFirstly, I am not the type of person to complain. So for me to complain it has taken an awful experience to do so. I emailed and called the hotel numerous times but was told the manager has read your email, and if he hasnt responded then he doesnt care. For starters that is no attitude to have from reception staff. So I did give them the benefit of doubt to rectify but they chose to be unprofessional and rude about the situation. We booked to stay on a Sunday to Tuesday, it was that awful we had to check out on the Monday (my husband wanted to check out on the same night but I insisted to stay as I didnt want to waste money as you can imagine!) As we had travelled from Crawley, we had to stay at a family members house for the remaining day and night. As we had days planned in eastbourne that day, even more disappointing that when booking over the phone was promised a nice room so was built up and gave false hope to end up receiving quite the opposite. The room didnt have aircon or even a fan in this hot weather, which was unbearable. We then mentioned this on checkout where we were told unsympathetically you couldve just asked for a fan pointing to a desk fan, which as you can imagine wouldnt air a whole room. The windows would only open slightly and not big enough to air a whole room. We also got bitten (whether this was dirtiness of the room or from outside we do not know!) and could not sleep due to this, where we ended up with no sleep which was not an enjoyable experience. The bathroom had no light, just on the mirror. Couldnt see of a night, too dark. Not sure how this is acceptable not being able to see your way through to the toilet properly. No shelves in bathroom for toiletries (no storage). Where was we suppose to put these? (Photos taken if needed). We feel like we may as well lived out the car for a night.. Bath was dirty (photos can be provided if needed) so couldnt even use as didnt feel clean enough to use. In room, lights just had bulbs hanging no coverings which is dangerous (hazard). Quilt had a blanket inside not an actual duvet. I really felt the need to express this dissatisfaction as I paid for a room expecting it to be up to standards and I feel I really didnt get what I paid for, I could have had a blanket over me and lights on and a clean bath at home for free. And now I feel I am £150 out of pocket from an awful experience. The breakfast was also terrible, poor quality, cold & bread hard on top, not fresh. The timings of breakfast between 7:30 - 8:30 was also very harsh. Where the service wasnt very good either. I am not very happy I have had to make a complaint as I am not usually the person to do so.
