Over RatedThis hotel had recommended to us; in particular, the romantic studio. It was situated up a steep stair case and there was no lift available. There was no air conditioning and the room was dusty. I cannot recommend the hotel. However, the location is great. I can recommend this general location, where there are many other hotels.

Lovely quirky - super central hotelThe review have been mixed and I guess it is worth mentioning that this hotel is UNIQUE, special and quirkly. Nothing for conservative no-fun kind of people. I enjoyed one of the nicest weekends there; the owner showed me around and could tell me lots of interesting stories on the house, the renovation, the art and simply about life in Hamburg and Cali. I would always go back, probably booking one of the luxurious room rather than the budget room that I had. Breakfast ist served at one big table, all guests together (well there are only 5 rooms!) - its an amazing experience and you will always meet interesting people. Overall: 4/5 - Unique - charming - lovely atmosphere - central - lots of restaurants around - 5 min walking distance to central train station - 2 minutes to the Alster. It was certainly very memorable and not just a "0815" - hotel stay.

a pretentious washoutSuch a disappointment as I had decided to splurge on the last days of my holiday. Do not arrive on a Sunday when the owner is in charge. He is frankly past it (nearly blind and deaf) and it took a frustrating hour to check in while he burbled on rudely, comparing my 'cheap' room to the grand suite below. My dusty attic room had no ensuite - the toilet is on the floor below and the shower - horrors - is in the owner's flat. The room is extremely noisy from traffic and the blind could not be adjusted to cut out the light at night. Breakfast was unimaginative, minimal as far as choice and almost inedible for me - the owner mixes in the oatmeal with the cornflakes, the fruit was some chopped apple combined with half a tin of pineapple, the yoghurt was also a mixture. It was such a let-down in comparison with the sumptuous breakfast banquet at my previous accommodation at Hotel Stadtmauer in Lubeck. I have never been so demeaned and abused as happened the next morning when I was again hounded by the owner re the bill before I had had a chance to change any more money (I had understood that half the value of the bill had already been deducted as a deposit when I booked as per their email). When I returned in the afternoon, a member of staff was just leaving and did everything in her power to smooth things over with profuse apologies. She was a gem. All in all, a few antiques and delusions of past glory are no substitute for service.
