2nd visit to hiiragiya bekkanMy now husband and I had stayed for one night here 16 years ago on a brief Kyoto stopover. We loved it then, but were neophytes. This time I scheduled a visit at the end of a two week tour thruout Japan and my friend was with me. It was all I remembered and more because of my greater Japanese experience this time. My friend and I were in the same room I had stayed in before-a double room with fantastic garden view and tokonoma. As before the welcome and service were excellent. The room is spare, but there are euro chairs and table to sit at too to view the garden and enjoy the many teas and sake. This time I could even more fully appreciate the kaiseki dinner and the exquisite seasonal features and perfect preparations (having eaten wonderful meals throughout Japan for the previous two weeks). I hope to return.

Wonderful ryokanWe had a wonderful 1 night stay at this vintage ryokan. It had the steepest staircase we have ever seen! We wonder how on earth the staff managed to lug our luggages up the stairs. The staff are wonderful and the staff assigned to our room could communicate in Chinese! The kaiseki dinner was one of the best we ever had. The Japanese breakfast was also another eye-opener for us. The bedding provided was comfortable. We all slept well. The Onsen bath was another wonderful experience. Overall we felt very pampered here.

Great for familiesThis is our third stay at Hiiragiya Bekkan and we hopefully will not have to stay elsewhere in Kyoto. We are absolutely happy with this ryokan. The beauty of the old traditional surroundings, the space of the rooms and the serenity of the gardens are on par with the excellent meals and the friendly, welcoming and very able staff. We have stayed at their parent property, the original Hiiragiya, too and we love the Bekkan more - not only for the clear price to value advantage, but also for the family feel. Of course there are some caveats. There are only separate onsen bathrooms, booked for your private use, but shared with other guests throughout the day. The furniture is far from new and there is shortage of storage space in the rooms. And the air-condition units would benefit from a major upgrade. But in my world, these minor things are absolutely worth staying in this wonderfull place.

Among the very finest ryokan in Japan. Our visit confirmed to us its reputation as one of the finest traditional ryokan in Japan. We stayed in the newer building "bekkan", meaning annex. Still totally traditional. I stayed in the original Hiiragiya on my first trip to Japan years ago, and fond memories intact. But I like Bekkan better, room and food. Exquisite service. Attention to detail is mind-boggling. This type of ryokan gives a unique experience. Staff at the front desk spoke English. The room was larger than a typical ryokan bedroom and had an alcove with chairs and table overlooking the private garden. The bath was in an adjacent room and allowed for family bathing, sexes together -- an uncommon treat in Japan. Breakfast and dinner were in the room. Extraordinary kaiseki cuisine at dinner. Great location near Nishiki market --- a must for a Kyoto experience.
