Very helpful and friendly Walch Family

We stayed at Hotel Cristallo for 2 nights after a week hiking in the Dolomites. We are Canadians hikers and it was our fist big trek in Italy and the Sudtyrol mountains. I e-mailed the hotel a month before our arrival asking if we good store our excess luggage with them while we went on our hike. Within a few ours I received a reply from the owners, one of the Walch brothers, telling us they would gladly accommodate our request. Arriving in Dobbiaco just hours before our week long hike, with our extra luggage in tow, we had a million questions about the bus, our way back after the hike, taxis etc... With grace and patience, Mr Walch answered all of our questions and found a solution for all of them. They went well over and above anyones expectations. Once of weeklong hike completed, we returned to the hotel and the stored luggage. We also found a spacious room with a large modern bathroom. We slept so well. Located just a few minutes from the train station of Dobbiaco, we found restaurants, gelato..bank, cultural visits. The hotel has an indoor pool, restaurant and a spa. After our stay in Dobbiaco we travelled Italy for 2 weeks and we can say that it was THE best service in Italy.

    Tranquil and relaxing

This is a family run hotel with superior facilities for a short break. Very good swimming pool and sauna. The beds were not the most comfortable with thin mattresses. Very good copious breakfast. The staff, especially the owner/manager, were somewhat aloof. Good base for hiking in the nearby mountains.

Nice hotel, decent food, great staff, stuffy management

Enjoyed our stay at this hotel, the food was good, spa was really nice and most of the staff was really really good and very friendly. Don't understand how the staff could be so good when the manager seemed to go out of his way to be stuffy - definitely didn't make us feel welcome. Had a good stay nonetheless. Wish that they would serve caffè, cappuccino, etc. after dinner. It was readily available in the bar, and I guess they want to draw you down there, but having a cappuccino after dinner at the table would be a nice touch. No regrets, but will choose a different hotel next time I'm there.

Nicest hotel in Tobblach though no longer near the pistes

The Hotel Cristallo is just off the main street in Tobblach ( Dobiacco). It was built when Sud Tirol was part of Austria and the ambience is almost entirely Austrian but with cappucino and spaghetti as well. It ws the first hotel in what was then a sleepy village and was built to be close to the northern facing slopes to the south. Sadly these no longer get enough snow so it is a bus ride to the new ski centre to the north or to the station. The bus bahnhof is within 100 metres of the hotel from whence you can travel with a free pass to any of the tracks through the forests or even over the mountain range to Cortina - which is much more Italian. The railway which runs along the valley and connects to Innsbruck in one direction and to southern Austria in the other also has stations close to ski tracks. For cross country skiing it is one of the best stations in Europe, guaranteed good snow as most of the tracks run through tall trees. Locals mostly are happier speaking German than Italian and English ability is limited.. Most hotel guests are German and are friendly, usually speaking better English than the staff. We also shared the hotel with the US Army cross country ski team but they were very self-absorbed and did not realise that we spoke english. Meals include a generous Austrian-style breakfast with cappucino and dishes like wiener schnitzel with spagheti in the evening. The local wine is a thin mountain red, but very palatable after a long day in the snow. The waitresses dressed in traditional Austrian clothes are pretty and helpful even with demanding Americans. The hotel is warm and has both a sauna and a small pool. Each room, though small and sparsely furnished has a balcony where you can snack and drink from items bought at the nearby supermarket. The owner, who inherited the hotel from his father, lacks bonhomie, but he responds better in German than English.i

    Dolomite Wonderland

For those of you who haven't discovered the beauty of the Italian Alps you're in for a real surprise when you travel to the area known as the Sud Tyrole. The towns are ancient and charming and the cross country skiing exceptional. We haven't been here in the summer but the literature leads me to belive it would be great. For the past 7 years my relatives and I have included this area in our 3 week family get-together winter vacation and for all of those years we've stayed at the Hotel Cristallo in Dobbiaco-Toblach. The Watch family has run the hotel for 3 generations and is currently in the more than capable hands of the 2 brothers, Arvin and Tomas. The hotel is charming, clean, quiet and the staff friendly and helpful. English isn't their strong suit but they will do everything in their power to determine your needs and help you out. The food is tasty with nice variety. We always do half board (breakfast & dinner). There's a great pool, jacuzzi, saunas and other Vita Health services available. This is truly a jewel in the Italian Dolomite crown!
