  Old But Good Value

  A little bit old. Great onsen. Copious amonts of good food for dinner and breakfast. A good bottle of Japanese white wine (yes, really) for 1500yen. Very nice tatami room. Best night's sleep I'd had in months, very comfortable futons etc. Very good value.

  A pleasant surprise

  It was our family's first time visiting Matsumoto and we booked this hotel quite randomly. That said, we were quite pleasantly surprised by a couple of elements: -Room. We booked a 3 person tatami room, which is very spacious and has a lovely sitting area facing the city/moutain view. I have stayed at several ruykons in Japan. Given the price we are paying, Omoto is a great bargain vs. the ones we have tried in Hokaido, Koyto or Tokyo. -Services. A very special thanks for Maria, who is the only fluent English speaker in the hotel. It made a very big difference having her to translate some of the more complicated requests. She is also very sweet and lovely to our daughter. Omoto is very lucky to have a great employee such as Maria. Other things for your consideration: -Location. It's a part of the Osama Onsen area. If you fancy having a walk to the city, you will need taxi back/forth, which could be quite expensive if you daily trip (probably US$15 one way). -Onsen. Just average. The 8th floor outdoor baby onsen is nice but quite small and doesn't really have much of a view. We tried family onsen which costs about US$20 a session. That's not worth it...it's just a slightly bigger bath tub, which is not enough for 3 ppl. -Food. We only tried breakfast. The Japanese breakfast is fine (but probably not as elaborate as some other onsen hotels may offer). It's interesting that they will charge you seperately for coffee or milk if it's a Japanese breakfast day. Overall, we will recommend Omoto.

  Great host with delicate catering

  The hotel is old but very well maintained and clean. Although the host staff team spoke limited English, they made us feel their warm hospitality. Their dinner and breakfast were worth the money we paid for. Recommended.

  Very comfortable stay

  We visited for an evening stay with our daughter and son-in-law. The hotel staff spoke no English but our daughter is fluent and lives and teaches in the area so that was fine. The staff were very courteous and attentive and the grounds were very nice. The room was very comfortable (Japanese style tatami). Both the evening and morning meal were plentiful and tasty. The views from the top floor hot baths and our room were beautiful. A very pleasant stay.

  Something Different

  Looking for something different? A real Japanese experience? Then go to Hotel Omoto in Matsumoto. Located a bit out of town (15 minute taxi drive - there is bus service but limited) this Ryokan has great personal service in typical immaculate Japanese style rooms. (which also means no chairs and sleeping on tatami floor with mattresses) There are hot baths (onsen), great Japanese style breakfast and just a calm relaxing atmosphere. Recommended.
