Revisited after 30 years and was not the same as I remember
I gotta admit, its been over 30 years and I really don't remember how it looked or how the service was. However, all I know is that this place is nothing extremely magical of any sort. The hotel room has two buildings. The one we stayed were the one where the main entrance is located. The guest service people were all nice which was a plus. Then they take you to have a arrival drinks (coffee, tea, juice, etc). After that they take you to your room. The room I must say is pretty big for Japanese hotel. They had two twin beds and a pullout sofa. The TV was extremely small for the modern days. Toilet had a bidet which was nice. The room we got had a big window in the bath were you are able to see the not so exciting night view of the mountains and the towns below. The hot spring or the public bath seems to be on a smaller size when you take in the size of the hotel. About 7 showers and a medium sized bath. There were bath outside called "Roten Buro" which can probably fit 3 people at most. Dinner buffet was the part that pretty much made the stay at the hotel with the 3 star. What I remember or what my parents remember were the great selection of fresh tasty food they had. We came to realize that they have downsized the buffet so much that the sesame dressing spinach was the best tasting food at the buffet. Kinda sad when you see a down grade with food qualities. They had a small firefly tour free of charge during the season when they mate. You walk through the woods to see this. It's not really special but being able to see it in the pitch dark wooded area was kinda nice. The trip was at most about 45 min. Parking is plentiful and there are more things to do but we just realized that we can find our own things to do and left the hotel after we ate the morning buffet. I really hoped that returning to this hotel was going to be something special but it was not. It's not a deal breaker though as if you go during the weekdays, the price is not bad.
