    Nice hotel & Outstanding food

Ive stayed at the Baylis a few times during lockdown due to work commitments in the area, but finally got to eat in the restaurant tonight, and oooo was it worth the wait. Ive eaten at a lot of Indian restaurants all over the country but the food here is up there with the best of them. Cooked to perfection and seasoned beautifully, if you stay here make sure you have the food.

    Rude Encounter

Let's just say, I don't appreciate anyone accusing me or my family of pooing on the bed. Long story short, a deposit wasn't taken at check in. The next day upon checking out, they asked to check our room before we left, which was of course fine by me. He took at least 5 minutes so he was really going through this room with a fine tooth comb, rather than just checking for any "standard" damage. He came back, and accused my 11 month old son of leaving skidders on the bed and asked we pay for the dry cleaning.... It was chocolate. If he had asked me to prove that, I would have been happy too. I wasn't prepared to get into an argument with this man who was trying to get a payment out of me for something that would easily come out in a standard wash, and I'm quite sure a small skidder of chocolate is not the worst thing those sheets have had on them. I won't continue with the rest of my opinions, but I'll just finish by saying that I wouldn't recommend this hotel to my family or friends and I will not be back.

    Grand façade but awful

When we pulled up to the hotel we were really impressed by the electric gates and beautiful entrance. My son even asked of this is where the queen lives, however the reception is to be found off to the right of this via what looks like disused industrial units. Our room was in an annexe by these units, and reminded me of a room in a hostel rather than a hotel. Slapdash paintwork, holes in wall filled but not sanded, unevenly laid laminate. The room had two double beds, one side of one of which had completely collapsed (fortunately there was only 3 of us staying) but all of which were uncomfortable. Very soft and you could feel every spring. I did not get a wink of sleep. It was one of the cooler nights in August but the room was stifling hot. No air con (as has been mentioned in other posts) but there fortunately was 2 fans which we had to use all night. This only gave limited relief. The water from the bathroom would not run cold only tepid so I went in search of the bar for ice. I asked at reception for the bar and the receptionist said he could get me some drinks if needed. He couldn't find ice though and suggested we get water from a local shop! Fortunately the chef appeared and was able to locate some ice for us. The bar remaimed mysteriously absent. I feel cheated. I did not see any of the luxury experienced by other guests and the photos of rooms on the website were nothing like what we had.

    Nightmare!!! You are kidding me!!!

Please read this before you stay here. I was part of a group of work friends, staying at this disaster for two nights. I guess that the organiser was duped by the photos on this website. Well, I can tell you that Baylis House is NOTHING like this. Overall, the hotel is tired and run down. It is dirty and the staff (except one guy) was unhelpful and quite confrontational when my issues were raised. These were: No bar facilities or barman, only two choices of burger and chips available, bathroom and shower fittings falling off the wall, no hot water on the second morning and so cold showers had to suffice. Whilst my colleagues were working nearby, one of the team were moved out of their room for no apparent reason and in their absence (bags packed and left at reception), even though the room was booked and paid for. This hotel is to be avoided and the owners need to urgently review what kind of poor service they are offering.

Impressive looking Grade 1 listed building

But that was all that was good about it. No information given at reception apart from the restaurant was only doing room service. Ah well, expect there will be more information in the room. Wrong, only a minimal menu for room service, no number to phone for room service or reception. FREE wifi but no password supplied. Dirty towels. Room not serviced after the first night. No matter which way you turned the taps in the bathroom you got hot water - I'm not keen to use hot water in a kettle to make a cup of tea. That's if your tea gets replenished anyway. A four poster bed, with a side rail that was higher than the mattress, and when I sat on the rail my feet were off the floor, and I am 6ft tall! then when on the bed, I had the feeling I was rolling into the middle of the mattress, cosy maybe but no too comfortable. Late august bank holiday weekend and the temperature during the evening and night beginning to take on an autumnal feeling - no matter what I did to the radiators they refused to get warm to take the chill off. Final straw was on the final morning of our stay, no electricity to make a cuppa, not enough flow from the water to have a shower, no electricity no water pump I presume. And a distinct drain smell in the bathroom. This hotel could be so much better, the inside does not match the first impressions of the drive in. Very basic, very far from delux.
