Beautiful place indeed, but scarce service and worst bedding ever!

We are a family of six and we rented apartment number three in this residence. The apartment was very well adapted for the size of our family and had a terrace with a beautiful view on the village of Atrani and the sea. Everything that the other reviewer's have been saying about the stairs, the steep drive and the reception of the only Italian speaking gardener is true. I also agree totally with the comments about the lack of items in the apartment: for the price we paid we would've been glad to at least find some basics such as soap, washing up liquid, maybe some paper napkins, sugar and a sufficient amount of toilet paper. When we arrived, there was some problem with the use of the credit card machine so we even briefly got to see the administrator or owner of the place (it may have been Mr Giulivo himself) when he fixed the said problem. We are a friendly lot and even speak some basic Italian but still the gentleman ignored us totally. Even though we were in the same room he didn't take notice of our greeting at all. He doesn't seem to want to mingle too much with his clients... Also for the price we paid the quality of the mattresses was just too bad. I would expect this type of sagged old mattress in a cheap youth hostel but not in a residence like that. True enough what another reviewer said: Of course for a child or a teenager a bed is a bed, but not for an adult of 50+. To summarize, all in all the place has excellent potential and it wouldn't take much to make it perfect. However I have my doubts that with the present ownership this will happen.

    Some good, lots v bad

First the good. Atrani is a lovely little seaside town with lots of choice for food and easy walk to amalfi, ferries, etc. Then be prepared for 380 steps back up to villa Rosa. Pool is ok but overseen by the sunbathing woman with a really irritating mobile phone playing games all afternoon. Nicola is a nice chap who sorts arrival, etc, but thankfully I do speak a little Italian or would have been difficult. The road in the property was tough even in a smart for 4. Bad: Aircon not included unless pay extra 15 per night- it is windy, you will be fine with windows open. No we were not! Noise +++. Church bells go every 15 mins 24/7. Dogs, cockerels etc and we were eaten alive by mosquitoes. Pay the 15 !! Remember to sort and take out garbage or 30 charge, no towels/linen change at all during 5 day stay. On balance would not recommend.

    Tired but authentic

All the negatives are outweighed by the villa , pool , location and views .Yes there are loads of steps - but that's the charm of the place - the unspoilt - yet to be made touristy little local village life . The noises of animals and weather at night just added to that. Just go shopping before you arrive for some consumables - the basics are provided. We love the place !

    Authentic Hideaway in Ravello

Villa Rosa is in a great location somewhere between Amalfi & Ravello (closer to township of Atrani). Some 380 steps down to Atrani beach and a small piazza w cafes, bars and supermarkets. Much of this walk is under cover and reasonably well lit at night. The town of Ravello sits above the cliff where Villa Rosa is situated. Keep in mind the walk to Ravello is extensive and will take around a hour. Advisable to go by car as public parking is available for 2 or more per hour depending on time of year. Google maps lists where car parks are situated. Guests may find the steep winding drive way to the villas a little tricky so a smaller car is advisable, otherwise Nicola the caretaker can collect you & your bags at the front gate in his mini buggy. His English was minimal to say the least, so some Italian certainly comes in handy. The grounds and gardens were beautifully kept and we loved the views from our villa & the terrace overlooking mountainous terrain and the water. We stayed in Villa number 5. Whilst the apartment was pristine clean, kitchen well equipped, if not a little on the small side- it was certainly far from polished and new. Be prepared for a rustic but charming accommodation and you wont be disappointed. Air conditioning worked great and the pool was a great way to keep cool in the day. Bear in mind that swimming hours are between 11am-6pm when the life guard is in attendance. The 2 washing machines located in a communal area were super handy too, with our own clothes line supplied on our terrace. It is a requirement that your rubbish/recyclables be separated and deposited in bins provided at the end of your stay. Your 200 bond is used to cover any expenses incurred should such rules not be followed. All Villas on the property differ so make sure to visit their website to check the layout. If visiting the Amalfi region again, we would definitely stay at Villa Rosa and would recommend it highly.

How much worth is a view?

The view from the appartments is stunning indeed. But is a 6-persons apartment worth EUR 1700 for an off-season week? Given the rather basic interior, lack of luxuries like dish washer, warm water for only 3 persons, lack of sufficient means to create shadow on south-facing balcony, etc., the price is on the high side. It becomes worse when electronic payment fails and you are requested to walk to an ATM to pay in cash. And if you then ask for a receipt, you only get after a lot of hassle. Problems worsen because the landlord is not at the premises and can only be contacted via mail. On site there is an only Italian speaking guy. That would not be a problem if everyhing is ok. Clearly this was not the case.
