    Un buen riad

Atendimiento, limpieza, servicios de muy buena calidad. Trato inmejorable. Fueron excelentes días. Las habitaciones grandes, limpias y muy bien decoradas. Un lugar de paz y descanso. Hicimos uso también del hammam y del masaje, espectaculares. Muy céntrico. Gracias a todo el personal.

    A very enjoyable stay

We stayed just days before the Coronavirus outbreak closed the airport and there isn't much opportunity for social distancing in Marrakech! The Riad has changed ownership in the last 6 months and we wish Tomas and Valerie, the new owners, all the best as summer 2020 already looks challenging. The location in the Medina is excellent, a number of exciting restaurants within 10 mins walk (Limoni, L'Midi, Secret Garden) and the Jemaa El f'na only 10 mins walk ... if you can get there without being hijacked by a local teenager who'll take you the long way round and demand a tip for the privilege. Front of house, Hakim & Yousef are excellent, knowledgeable, really helpful and with good spoken english. Our room was comfortable, plentiful hot water, I have a bad back and the bed was excellent, but being a riad had no windows. Thank goodness no TV! The only criticism is that it can be noisy, - stone floors & walls, and with a rather loud front doorbell. The continental breakfast served in the central courtyard is adequate, breads & jams etc, eggs on request, but could be made more varied and imaginative. A very enjoyable stay, well located and very welcoming.

    Terrible experience

In some ways this looked like it was going to be a great holiday. The riad is awesome and the first impressions were great. There was a lovely young guy who welcomed us inside and offered us tea, which was a great touch. But they charge for literally everything (including the tea, as we found out later) and at unbelievable prices. Later on in our stay, my friend wanted to buy something from the souk, was overheard by the manager and got whisked off to some shop in the souk. When he told me how much he had paid for a small sachet of spices, around £30, I was so shocked I went to the first shop outside and was offered the same for less than £1 without even haggling. That was the first price offered. My friend was confused by the exchange rate and didnt realise until he got back to the hotel. The same thing happened at checkout. They added on extra charges, again at unbelievable rates. Ordinarily I would be too embarrassed and rushed to get to the airport to query these things but they charged for things that were included in the price eg breakfast and taxes (which were specifically included in our package) again at unbelievable prices. We stood our ground and refused to pay and eventually they backed down after an argument but it was really unpleasant. I think they only relented because other guests could overhear our complaint and they didnt want to miss an opportunity to fleece them too. If we had paid up it would have been an extra £150-£200, which is way way too much. If youre going to rip me off, make it small or unnoticeable, not a days wages. They are really good at warming you up so they can fleece you without you realising it but I wouldnt trust the manager at all. The other problem with the holiday was that Marrakech has so much potential but for far too many, tourists are an opportunity to fleece people. I really looked forward to a tagine but everywhere we went we paid London prices for a reheated, microwaved dish, served up on a disposable plastic plate. In the end, I gave up and found a brilliant Moroccan restaurant in Shepherds Bush and paid less there than I did in Morocco for a freshly cooked and very tasty meal which is what I should have done in the first place. And heres the thing, it was such a good experience I go back to that restaurant regularly. Theres a lesson there for the average Moroccan. By the way, theres no pool (its a fountain), the hamam is a small cupboard, the terrace was out of bounds, the breakfast was very basic and served very begrudgingly. Honestly, if you are happy to pay the extra charges then its not too bad but if youre the sort of person who doesnt like to be surprised then avoid this hotel like the plague.
