My wife's birthday is October. We usually go to Jackson Hole and just hang out. After our stay on Labor Day in September. She has chosen to return to Teewinot Lodge. there are so many things that we missed on our short stay shops, two more eating stops . Even discovering the decor and pictures in the lobby. The pool and hot tube are calling and we don"t even SKI. see you in a couple weeks

    Bugs, Bugs and more bugs

Switch your plans if you are at Teewinot lodge at Grand Targhee. My 8 year old had 54 bug bites after a three night stay after Christmas. They have a serious infestation of some type of bug. The thought of being in a ski in/out is nice but the risk is high. It was a large amount of work for me when I arrived back home as to ensure no hitch hiker bugs returned home with me. Also had to pay a pest company on my own dollar to give me a peace of mind that no bed bugs/other pests were going to enter my home due to my stay at Grand Targhee. Management would not take any liability to this issue which to me says ALOT to the integrity of the company. They have no bed bug protocol nor do they have a bug bite log. Be very aware of you chose this location and if you see one bite know that more will come.

    Off the Beaten Path

My husband and I chose this place because it was a lot less expensive than hotels closer to Teton Village. It was a pretty long drive into Tetons and Yellowstone, but do-able and the drive very beautiful. Our room was on the 2nd floor with no elevator so we had to carry up the hill from the parking lot, and then up the stairs, all of our luggage. The queen-size beds were small. There is no air conditioning, but the fan put in the window overnight made sleeping cooler. Smokers smoked right outside the front door, which wafted up into our room, and I'm allergic to cigarette smoke, so this made breathing difficult at times. Internet service was sketchy so we didn't get a connection until we drove into town.

Not as close to Jackson and GTNP as I imagined!

A little older but amazing beds and comforter. Starbucks in room was nice. Long windy road to the lodge is beautiful but trying after a long day. Restaurant was good but pricey ski lodge tab. No draft beer during our visit. Do a little Mapquest if you hope to do the park from here. Its doable but over an hour from Jackson. Exploring the National Forest was fun on the day we didnt go that far. Driggs and Victor breweries made for nice evenings.

The good and not so good. Decide what works for you!

We were looking forward to checking out the Grand Targhee ski area from our new home base in Alpine, Wyoming. We spent the prior three days skiing Jackson Hole for the first time. Grand Targhee is about an hour and a half drive up the side of the mountain from Alpine, longer from Jackson Hole. I read all of the TripAdvisor reviews before booking. We decided to go with this lodge over the Targhee lodge because the reservationist convinced me that it was a quieter hotel. The cost was about $100 more, per night. The Reservationist put us on the second floor all the way down the end of the hall. This was away from the main lobby which TripAdvisor writers said was very noisy. So far so good. There are only two floors to this lodge, so if you are on the 2nd floor, no one is above you clomping around with their ski boots. TA readers need to know that the reservationist couldnt guarantee who would be next-door to us. As it turns out, it was a group of young guys who were intent on being as loud as possible. Kinda like a frat house. The walls are paper thin. There is a sign that says quiet time after 10 PM. After we made some noise to make sure they knew someone was next door, the guys did tone it down after 10. Just to be clear. This place shuts down by 8 pm. No where to go. If you want to read or watch TV, thats about it. The beds were comfortable, and despite a previous TA review, there were absolutely no bugs anywhere. The shower, however, was a horror. There is a sign that states they have a 30 gallon hot water tank and to time your showers accordingly. The problem is the shower valve was not working at all. This meant the water was either scalding hot or ice cold with no way to regulate the temperature. My husband actually opted to forgo a shower on the day we were leaving because it was so bad. The location is truly ski in ski out. It seems to me that the resort is just getting back on their feet due to Covid. Most of the restaurants, of which there are only a couple, closed by 7 PM. We had dinner at The Branding Iron. Probably best place in the area and dinner with drinks will put you over $100 +. Service was good, as was with all the service personnel from the front desk to rental facility at Grand Targhee. The Trap bar, the place to enjoy apres ski, had no food and only drinks because the server said they havent been able to get anybody to work there. They were working on it and hoped to serve food within the month. There is an outdoor area near the main lift with a large fire going. There wasnt any music, of any kind at anytime so no one really hung around after skiing. Kind of disappointing. This resort attracts many day trippers and mostly locals. They come in, ski and leave. We saw some in the parking lot tailgating!! The average age is the 20 something set. My husband and I seemed to be the oldest skiers on the mountain, which was odd. Lift ticket prices are half what youd pay in Jackson, which was a positive. There is absolutely no doubt that Grand Targhee is spectacularly beautiful and the skiing is great. That is if the mist doesnt roll in. Its like youre skiing in a cloud! Visibility becomes difficult. Weve heard that this occurs in January. Maybe its better in the spring. Would I return? Probably not. Jackson skiing was about the same, but there were places to go for apres ski and dinner. The crowd is mixed and much more lively. We stayed at the Alpenhaus where they recommended Ski Butler which comes to your room (for the same price as the walk-in shop). It saved a lot of time and you didnt have carry gear back and forth. A real plus. Got us on the hill faster. If you have a family or are learning to ski, and money is tight for an expensive sport like skiing, Grand Targhee is the place for you. The price of lift tickets is very fair and the skiing is spectacular. Lots of kids green runs and programs. Staff everywhere are attentive and nice. For us, those were pluses.
