    Dinner before 2nd Lockdown

    Become a firm favourite with a great manager and team serving great meals with a smile . Feel completely safe in these difficult times as the team have been trained well . Made a meal before the end of October and will definitely be back in December

    Would thoroughly recommend a visit to this hotel

    Booked 2 nights at this hotel in a twin room so we could arrange outside visits with family in the area. Firstly the hotel was excellent value, right opposite the abbey within few minutes walk of the town centre shops and cafes. The room had all we wanted including crisp, clean bedding and very comfortable beds, clean large bath towels in the bathroom and we had a very peaceful night although this may have partly been down to the fact that the second lockdown had only just finished so there weren't many guests. They had good Covid restrictions throughout the hotel including a one way system for getting to and from the bedrooms. All the staff gave excellent service and were friendly, efficient and hard working but need to mention the manager Hannah, who regaled us with stories of her time as a travel rep (curtailed by the pandemic) who was there working on both evenings and mornings we were there. Also want to mention Emily who served us both evenings in the restaurant and was so friendly and helped cheer up what was a very quiet restaurant at times. Couldn't fault the food as we enjoyed both our evening meals and breakfasts in the hotel restaurant (Greene King). Excellent choice of food and freshly cooked. Only comment I would say is the rooms could do with a refurb but then you have to accept its an old building plus with the current lack of business I doubt they can afford an expensive upgrade. In summary we have stayed at three of the main hotels in the town and this was our favourite and we would certainly go back.

    Value Break

    I got a good deal when I booked a week earlier having stayed at Greene King before. My room was adequate though there was a bit of road noise from outside. The breakfasts were enjoyable and the service was good, Rosie in particular was great. I ate an evening meal and found the standard to be high. My mattress was a bit lumpy but I managed to sleep. Overall a good place to stay with a car park and easy access to the Abbey, river and main shopping streets.

    Christmas break at The Bell

    At short notice we booked a two night Christmas package. This included two night stay with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner as well as breakfast on both days. First up, we can honestly say our time at the Bell overall was exceptional. Staff at the Bell could not have been more accommodating. We were made to feel so welcome. The hotel provided Covid guidelines to all guests. It is a Covid secure pub. Hand sanitisers were available in all access entry areas. It was a one way system to walk in and walk out. Masks were required to wear whilst walking around the hotel and restaurant area. Accommodation: in keeping with the age of the building, the rooms are not ultra modern however, had character and provided us with all the essentials. The bed was extremely comfortable in room 1 and we slept so well. Food: for a couple who dine out regularly it exceeded our expectations. All dinners and breakfasts were delicious. The food was presented very well and we gave the chef a round of applause on Christmas Day. The Christmas lunch was beautifully presented and very tasty. Wish we could of finished it all!! Big thank you to the chef (sorry cant remember his name). General: Huge plus point for the hotel are its management and staff. Molly the hotel manager was so friendly and accommodating with our general requests. Hannah who is the deputy manager led the Christmas night quiz and really entertained us. She has a great sense of humour. Special thanks also to the rest of the staff Emily, Lucy, Rosie and Jess. We would definitely return if in the area.

    Christmas fail

    Went as a family Christmas meal 20.12 20,the meal itself was great but the dog running about loose in the restaurant whilst eating us unacceptable. The waitress had a problem wearing her face mask,which most of the time was under her nose. We have all been tested for covid 19 after the meal for obvious reason we shall never return ,
