Very poor hotel. Needs liftingThe car park was very tight and I struggled to get my car parked. The reception and entrance was dingy. The guy working there is pleasant and efficient. We stayed in an attic room overlooking the car park. The bed was new and clean and comfortable. The room itself was tired and had stained carpets and walls. The shower had zero pressure so we used the bath. The toilet cistern was so noisy and took ages to fill. The location is good as it's on the high street but to be honest that's the only thing good I can say. For what we paid it was ok and done us but we wont return.

Oh dearPassion, hospitality experience and a fair amount of cash could turn this place - currently on the market for a knock-down price - into a charming boutique hotel. It certainly does not have charm or anything else going for it at the moment. On the contrary, it is seedy, dirty and rundown and nothing like it's advertising spiel and pics. Such a shame as it's location is ideal - right on Battle High Street and literally seconds from the town's main attraction, Battle Abbey and Battlefield. The building is historic (private residence, town hall, Napoleonic Military Court ... ) and boasts a grand circular staircase and chandelier. There the glory ends. The hotel was fronted on the ground floor by an Italian Trattoria - this is now closed and empty with the windows plastered in scrappy bits of paper and a tatty message pointing you to the hotel entrance around the back. This is through a door with broken glass in the windows. The lobby is covered with tatty notices - for example, 'no noisy parties allowed'! Hardly reassuring. The staircase is badly lit and positively dangerous while the room ... it was a last-minute booking in a peak period and we literally needed a base for one night so we stayed. Worth £80? No. On the plus side, the bed linen and towels were clean but - window filthy and had to be propped open overnight with a shoe. The windowsill was thick with dust. Next to the window was a random iron holder without iron. The curtains were tacky, sticky nylon and didn't fit properly. Lights were out in the bedroom and bathroom. Fingerplates around light switches were filthy. There was no lock or latch on the inside of the door just a hole where it had once been. The bathroom - stained toilet, broken toilet seat, random carrier bag on the floor behind the door, wonky sink tap, rusty plug hole, broken shower door and, really dangerously, no cold water in the shower, just a broken adjuster. We crept out in the morning hoping we wouldn't be asked if we'd enjoyed our stay. We weren't! The hotel has been on the market for some time - trying to peel away the layers of who actually owns it is impossible and it now costs less than a seaside static caravan. Please - somebody take it on and work some magic.

Overnight stop for Battle Abbey and BattlefieldSome reviews on the George are very negative. This objective review tells what to expect; on the plus side, This is a 400 year old, 23 bedroom, character hotel in excellent position on Battle High street. The overnight prices are not extortionate given its prime location and Free parking is provided to rear of hotel. The bedding and towels were clean and our room was decorated in a boutique style. It would appear every room is different. This is not a sanitised premier inn/ travelogue type stopover so expect quirks and flaws in the room. Upon entry to the hotel you enter an, admittedly, tired reception counter with Covid protective Perspex in place. But you stand in a grand spiral staircase hall with painting and mirrors on each turn, looking up to the roof through three floors. Externally, the hotel does not look much and has a coach house style appeal. There is a closed Italian trattoria to the front ground floor, and hotel entry is to the side drive rear to rear of hotel. Our room #3 was to the front, on first floor, overlooking the high street. The room was comfortable, the bed was large with clean sheets and towels laid out. The room contained a luggage stand, a comfy chair, a mirrored dresser(which was old fashioned) and a large period piece wardrobe. Two bedside cabinets and a chair for the dressing table completed the furniture. The en suite was Ok with shower unit, toilet and sink. Admittedly, The en-suite could have benefited from a proper mirror( a temporary small mirror was in place). Complimentary shower/ shampoo/ soap were supplied. All perfectly functional for an overnight stop. Things to be improved. Repairs to a hairline crack in sink, which did not affect its use. A cracked tile on floor which again wasnt a problem purely aesthetic. Also two bulbs in the living room multi lit ceiling light were out which should have been checked prior to our visit. It was not a major problem. Position is excellent. The hotel is a few hundred yards from Battle Abbey, and has an excellent separate Thai restaurant to rear. The hotel is right amongst the town centre, and Easy walking access to nearby pubs and cafes...And two Costa coffees!! 3 stars. Could do with some loving attention but perfectly functional.

Shabby and not recommendedOn the plus side the building is wonderful - part of the history of this area and situated a stones throw from Battle Abbey. However the place is in need of a total makeover. Reception is not manned after 21:00 and no breakfast is available (there are several cafes nearby). Do not try and use the hotel parking if you have a large car. It was designed for a horse and carriage, and is VERY tight to turn around in. Room was poor - cracked and wobbly floor tiles, sellotape holding the remote together, a bed with worn out springs and a tiny gap to the wall which you have to squeeze through to get into the room. Electric power was from a garden cable extension! There was no cover on the ceiling light. Overall very bad - at £95 for the night very poor value.

Not worth £80Just stayed one night in the George while walking the 1066 Way and this hotel seems to be going downhill. The Italian restaurant has gone and the hotel offers no food whatsoever, not even breakfast. At £80 this doesn't represent good value in my book.
