Fabulous stay at the Sun Peaks Grand Residences!

We stayed in a 2 bedroom Residence at the Sun Peaks Grand for 9 nights with our family of 2 A & 2 C (aged 12 & 14yo). This was our 10th consecutive year skiing in British Columbia, but our first trip to Sun Peaks (having skied in Whistler and/or Big White for the last decade) so we have several ready comparisons to other similar places we have stayed in over several years. Our first priority for accommodation is location - must be convenient ski-in ski-out and easy walking distance to shops & restaurants for dinners. The Sun Peaks Grand definitely ticks both boxes here! It is conveniently located in the centre of the village, and is ski-in-out. Despite its convenient location, surprisingly street noise never seemed to be an issue. Our second priority is quality of accommodation, and the Grand would have to be the best option of all the hotel/lodge style options available in the actual Sun Peaks village itself as far as quality, room configuration and facilities, and age of refurbishment is concerned. Ski-in / Ski out - Whilst the entrance for the Residences is located towards the top of the village (versus the main hotel entry which is nearly directly in front of the lifts), the run through the village has a gentle downhill slope which is groomed every morning at 7am, so it is a simple case of pick up skis from the ground floor ski valet room (no allocated areas, just a secure locked room where you can find a free spot & use your own ski lock) walk a few steps out the door, put skis on and then ski down a very gentle slope to the lifts (need to build up a bit of speed at the end if you can, as there is a slight traverse at the bottom). Ski in access was very simple once we knew how to do it (c/o friends with whom we had travelled who showed us the way on our first day) - simply turn off Gentle Giant (take the village platter up from the village, or rambler run from the Sundance Express chairlift), take a small turn-off to the left from the Gentle Giant run, ski down a short track to the road, a quick skis off to walk across the road (or risk damaging your skis), then skis back on and an easy slide down back to the front entry of the Grand Residences. Room facilities - the quality of accommodation was lovely. The condo was warm and able to be well ventilated (fans in bathrooms, opening windows & sliding balcony doors), and the furniture & beds comfy with sufficient storage in the bedrooms, bathroom and living/entry area. Great water pressure for hot showers any time of the day. Compact but totally adequate kitchen facilities, and private laundry facilities in each condo. Noise - street noise was never an issue, but the neighbours above us sounded like they were stomping around in ski boots for at least an hour every morning and afternoon. Thankfully we didn't mind because we were always awake and out early & back late ourselves, but for those who like to sleep in and have a rest day occasionally, it could prove to be a nuisance. Not much you can do about that unless you increase the valet system to include boots and then disallow ski-boots in the condos. Hotel facilities:- there is a convenient direct covered walkway that takes you from the Residences through to the hotel eg if you want to use the main pool, spa facilities or restaurant without leaving the building. Also makes it very convenient if you are travelling with other family or friends staying in the main hotel. Staff:- the staff at check-in, check-out, in the restaurants and massage were excellent. So what are the cons? 1) Securing accommodation here at peak times can be very difficult. Because all the units are privately owned, they have to wait until the owners have determined when they will be staying vs banking dates, which means that you cannot book accommodation here until the April prior to the next ski season (usually by then we have already booked flights & accommodation elsewhere, which is why it has taken us 10 years to finally make it to Sun Peaks - we hated the "waiting game" and always "gave up" & booked to go to another resort after getting frustrated not being able to book in advance). In addition, there are not that many units available in the Sun Peaks Grand Residences given the size of the ski resort and the limited accommodation options, particularly in larger configuration units, so you have to be lucky to snap up a larger unit to accomodate a family. 2) Housekeeping was of an excellent standard, but during peak times they are under pressure to get all units cleaned within a reasonable timeframe. Several times we arrived back in the mid to late afternoon to find that our unit still hadn't been serviced yet Overall, a lovely and convenient stay at the Sun Peaks Grand Residences. This place is my first choice particularly for those travelling as a family (if you are travelling as a couple only, you would probably be equally as comfortable at the adjacent and newly refurbished Sun Peaks Grand Hotel which is a tad closer for ski-in-out to the lifts). Whilst I would definitely love to stay here again, the waiting until April to find out if it will be available is somewhat frustrating, although does indeed appear to be the case with many places in Sun Peaks except for the privately owned and run condos which do tend to come up on booking engines a bit earlier.

    Great Condo Hotel

We stayed at the Sunpeaks Grand Residence for 7 nights. Very well located hotel in the center of Sunpeaks Resort. Good sized room in good condition. If you use the right ski runs its effectively ski-in ski-out. We will return. The Great Bits: Large, clean rooms. The Good Bits: Very well located in the village. The Bad Bits: Service at times (not a real hotel), breakfast buffet (lots of other choices). Also note the equipment hire shop in the hotel (not run by hotel) has low levels of stock at peak times.

Look elsewhere for accommodation at Sun Peaks Resort

Strongly recommend against this hotel. We stayed at the Residences in February 2019. The Sun Peaks Grand Residences was created by joining two hotels together. The Residences are linked with an overhead walkway to the main hotel. Upon arrival at the Residences, there was no front desk with staff to check in, nor were there luggage racks to assist, but only a note directing us over to the main Grand Hotel. It took over an hour to get checked in, and we had to find our own luggage racks. A one bedroom suite, such as we had, is currently listed at $572/night for February 2020. The state of our suite left much to be desired. We had to phone for missing light bulbs and basic amenity information. The fireplace is not gas (nor wood), but merely a light bulb behind a rotating fan. The upholstery on the dining chairs was stained with dirt (see 2 photos of chairs). The bathroom ceiling had a hole needing repaid (see photo). All that, at such a premium price! And to top it off, it cost an extra $20/day to park in their filthy underground parking lot. Yes, filthy. I know snow and dirt can be messy, but this was beyond anything we had ever seen at a ski resort. Please consider other options at Sun Peaks.

    Best accommodation in Sun Peaks.

Best for ski in ski out. Room look dated on marketing material but they are nice. Best location. Bars and restaurants on door step. So close to main chairlift. Friendly and very helpful staff. Couldn't recommend anywhere else.

    Perfect place to stay

We stayed in a 1 bed apartment. Our first apartment 1210 was very close to the village run - only 60 steps, but was next to the cark park and utilities area with strange noises overnight. It wasn't something they could fix immediately so they relocated us to 1403, a really lovely apartment a little further from the ski run (100 steps). Both apartments are finished to a high standard, the servicing was fine and the staff lovely and very helpful. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. The grocery market is just around the corner, and the ski rental even closer. The mountain outlook and interior shots are from the apartment 1210, the other the view from 1403.
