  A bit disappointed

  I booked this a bit last moment and payed 30,000 yen for two people for one night. For that price range, this was probably one of the least good hotels/ryokansI stayed in Japan. The Good: -Room -- We booked a Japanese style tatami room and it was more or less what you would expect. But it had a very nice view of the Kanto plain which gives it a very good edge. -Location --Just by the Tsukuba shrine, it's probably one of the best locations at least within Ibaraki. The Not-So-Good --Food Dinner (which was included in the price) is good volume-wise but very average for quality. The sashimi was not too fresh, and overall it didn't meet the expectations you have from a good Ryokan in Japan. --Service This is a Japanese Ryokan, so we start from a very high benchmark. If it was any other country I would rate the service excellent, but compared to the experience I had in other Ryokans in Japan this was a bit below average. The restaurant staff were a bit rough around the edges, it took a bit of time to get their attention and it didn't feel like the professionalism you often see in similar places. Note that nobody could speak English but that's something you would expect. -Traditional If you are a foreigner looking for a traditional Ryokan, this is probably not good for you. The Bad -- Onsen The onsen was a bit of a disappointment. They have 3 baths, which they rotate between men and women. There is one at the roof, which is supposed to have very nice view, but you couldn't really see much, the water was too hot, smelled of chlorine and had no amenities. The bath itself was very small and there were 3 other guys inside when I went and we could barely fit. There is one on the 2nd floor which has a small inside bath and an outside bath which is under reconstruction. The water was nurui (lukewarm) and again smelled of chemicals. Besides the water the amenities of the onsen was quite average. Lastly there was one on the 1st floor which was a roman bath theme with an outside bath. This is probably the best of the three but again the water was not great and also it felt a bit fake. In summary, what I look in a Ryokan is the food and the onsen both of which were a bit below my expectations.

  tsukuba fun

  Walked in without any prior reservations. Very pleasant experience, super helpful staff, wonderful view over the valley. Cherry on the cake, Mt Fuji in the far distance. Enjoyed the stay, food excellent!
