    Seaside hotel in Karatsu

We stayed here for one night while passing through Karatsu on a roadtrip through Northern Kyushu. Overall, the room was very clean with traditional tatami floors and an outdoor bathtub overlooking the ocean. The property was very quiet. I didn't see any other guests until the next morning at breakfast. The best part of this place was taking a hot bath and hearing the waves break outside. If we happen to be in Karatsu next time, we would definitely stay here again.

Quite expensive during new year, but worth it.

We stayed during new year when Japanese families would stay for celebration. It was almost 50% more than normal prices. We got a warm welcome. Although the staff could speak very little English, they tried very hard to introduce the hotel and to explain Karatsu's points of interest. Hotel staff took our luggages up to the room while we had welcome tea & cookies at the cafe. Which overlooked the spectacular sunset into the ocean. Dinner involved lobster, abalone, "luxury fish steak" and many others. Only complaint is the food was a bit cold when it came on the table. When we asked our Japanese friend to translate the menu for us, she mistook the "steak" to be beef steak. My toddler had been obsessed with Saga beef since coming to Saga. We told him to be patient and wait for the beef. Whew good thing we could order beef when the mistake was discovered. Our Japanese styled room was a typical one. Quite aged. Overlooked the ocean. By the way, this hotel was quite old and we stayed in the old wing. We didn't know there's a new wing when we booked. As usual, we non-Japanese would find the futons to be less comfortable than mattress. But we were there to experience the culture. The baths were not natural hot springs. No complaints with the indoor and outdoor baths. By the way, the hotel's smallest yukata was kid's large size. So there was no yukata available for my toddler. Swimming pool was closed during winter. Breakfast was another elaborate affair. There was a box, soup and rice served to us. There also was a long buffet table. When we checked out, toys were gifted to kids. They naturally were ecstatic.

Very nice staff & best food in the world

Excellent mix of traditional ryokan and modern comfort. Staff is very friendly and polite. We very much liked the indoor and outdoor onsens. They also have a nice swimming pool, which we however did not use because the sea is only a few steps away (the hotel is practically on the beach) and we prefer swimming in the sea. We loved the traditional Japanese (so non-Western!) breakfast and dinner. The food is really superbe!
