    Castillo

    Good hospitality but room issues

We stayed in Dovecote, having booking the Calf Pen we were confused but we didnt mind too much and entered the room. Decor was quirky as we expected and clean. The bed was comfortable but the springs squeaked so loudly neither of us got any sleep as every time the other moved we woke up. Also we could hear another guest directly through the wall and woke up early in the morning when they were showering. So we left exhausted unfortunately! The breakfast was very good. The best bacon Ive ever had at a B&B. The owners were very pleasant and seemed to be managing covid restrictions well. We wouldnt rule out staying again but I feel some updates to the rooms should be done like new mattresses and soundproofing to make the stay more comfortable.

    A Unique and Fantastic Experience

Firstly I feel I must comment on some of the negative reviews because it actually made us a little unsure before we arrived - they are completely unnecessary and I can only assume that the people who have left them have been extremely picky. We too are fussy regarding our accommodation choice but this place was amazing. I could not say what star it is because it is in a class of its own and very unique. From the minute we arrived we were given a lovely warm reception from Evelyn, one of the owners. We were shown to our room which was very quirky but unfortunately it did not have a shower which my wife preferred rather than a stand alone bath - no problem for Evelyn, whilst we had to stay in the original room for the first night, we managed to swap to an equally lovely room for the following 3 nights. The breakfasts were cooked by the other owner, Peter and they were lovely. I do not understand the comments about a small breakfast - we both had fresh fruit salad and yogurt, full english breakfast, toast and jam and could have had cereal too. The breakfast was delivered by a lovely polish waitress who also made sure we had everything and nothing was too much trouble. They adhered totally to covid19 and we do not feel awkward or unsafe at any time. The place is really quirky and has some really unusual antiques, the untidyness that some people mention adds to the quirkyness, they just need to relax and enjoy themselves when on holiday instead of criticising what isn't necessary. I would recommend this place to everyone and anyone and we will most definitely return. Just off the A1 and so easy to get to places. A big thankyou to Evelyn and Peter and the staff, it was a really enjoyable break. Well done and Spot On !

    Awful

Dangerous entrance off and onto A1. Untidy surroundings, no garden. Awful room (Round Room). No light on winding stairs. Difficult lock. Uncomfortable bed. Sink would not drain. Noisy boiler pump going off and on all night. But lovely breakfast and very friendly waiting staff.

    Safety Hazard - Beware!

We stayed (or tried to stay) in a most dangerous and weird room we have ever come across. Apparently we had been "upgraded" to a room in an attic which entailed traversing through several antique showrooms, up and down mini/half steps which were unlit or marked with a warning sign and connected these showrooms. We then climbed industrial metal stairs which were also unlit to an attic room. All of this was a nightmare when negotiating in semi darkness (it was 7.30pm) and carrying luggage. From a weird/bizarre point of view my husband was advised to turn the water tap on when flushing the toilet to reduce the loud rumble from the toilet In the room a single bed was more like a 3/4 size bed with extra padding at the foot of the bed to make it appear like a full single bed size. The bedding was for the 3/4 bed size. Totally unsuitable for a 6ft 3" adult. There was an extension cable hanging from the rafters which was unnerving. From a cleanliness perspective, there was a notice on our bed advising about Cornavirus/COVID19 etc. When I picked up the TV handset it was filthy and black with dirt and grime which totally grossed me out! There was a large cobweb from the shower light. As we lay in bed the noise from the A1 traffic was incessant. Additionally, there would seem to be a build up of pressure in the piping and a continuous swoosh of noise like a steam train through our room would follow. The hostess appeared to do her best to avoid contact or hospitality. My husband asked her a question and she muttered that he would have to speak to her husband and rushed off. When my son and I arrived, the hostess made no effort to greet or welcome us although she was working by the window as we passed,. We left after an hour as it was so awful. I would deem it a health hazard due the the dangerous negotiation to reach the room and the cleanliness. We were deceived by the photos from previous reviews.
