  Reginay made the place

  We stayed in Cuiaba for the World Cup, the city is clearly not geared up for international tourists but the staff at Alvorada Palace made the place. We arrived for the first game in Ciuaba and renovations were still taking place at the hotel (as was happening in the rest of Brazil) We had a room with a newly renovated bathroom, which was very clean and nice, the door could do with replacing though as the knob often got stuck leaving us concerned that wed get stuck in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast spread was great. Whilst most of the staff did not speak English the manager Reginay did and each day he would hang around the foyer making himself available to guests for any queries. He was so extremely helpful and I have to say that he made the stay. He helped with instructions on how to get around, where to eat etc. (In fact he recommended a nearby per kilo restaurant Alexis Restaurant which was fabulous!). On one of the days a white T-shirt that Id been wearing to bed must have gotten mixed up with the sheets when housekeeping serviced the room, we asked Reginay if the T-shirt was found and he found it for us - we didnt expect to see it again and were very impressed. Usually the price for the hotel would be a lot less than we paid and at normal rates this hotel would be great value. Dont expect luxury, but do expect a good room with lovely service. Location is a 20 minute walk to the old town and easy taxi ride anywhere else (as long as you dont choose peak hour)

  Disappointment

  I'm usually not picky when it comes to hotels but this one was pretty bad and much overpriced for the quality you get. Bear in mind my visit was during the World Cup so the prices were at all time high. The hotel is very old and run down, bathroom so tiny that the shower head was hanging right above the toilet. Furniture really old and half broken. On the positive side, the breakfast was good with many choices of fruit and different juices, and the staff was friendly.
