First time B&B..a bit of mixed bag.

On the way to Genua to catch a cruise by MSC we flew to Bergamo. From there we drove to Serravalle Outlet. Less than 1 hour away from Genua it was the perfect stopoff point. It turns out that Gavi is a village next to Serravalle. And that its a main tourist and wine area. Its really surprising how many good restaurants are in this area. After researching online the B&B Cascina Santa seems like the best value. It's not easy to find it and was actually quite a bit away from Gavi town.About 30 minutes from outlet center. The B&B lies ontop of a hill and there is quite a steep ride up a hill. But once there the view is awesome. I was warned than in winter it will be impossible to climb this hill if there is snow. Even though it has asphalt, riding up will be very difficult. It;'s like a small farm. We stayed at an annex building, while the family lives in the main house. There are just a few(5 or 6) rooms with the 1st floor having two rooms. 1 double and 1 triple room. This is where we stayed. It is a shared bathroom. A toilet and bath for both rooms. But as a family sharing both rooms its seems just like home. The rooms are nicely decorated with lots of knickknacks. But everything is spotlessly clean. The double room had a great bed. Comfortable and firm. But the triple was not so great. Bed had a old fashion mattress. So hard that you feel like sleeping on a board. The third bed is not fit for adult. The 4 year old girl loved it. But if you are an adult...it will be even more uncomfortable. The bathroom was large and clean. But the shower lacked serious water pressure. Hard to shower normally. Quite unacceptable if we stayed longer. Baiscally washing with just a washcloth is better. Just staying for 1 night we didnt complain or try to have the propriator resolve it. So not sure how permanent the problem is. What was great was the friendliness and hospitality from the lady who owned it. She also cleaned the whole place and I think designed everything. You could see the care and love put into the place. Breakfast was the culmination. She made her own spinach quiche and also a apricot pie. With fresh homebrewed coffee. Fresh breadrolls. Very good home made continental breakfast. So in the end it was quite a good experience for a 1st time B&B. To be honest if I was staying in teh triple room...my rating would or could be signifcantly lower. Because i slept so well and i was able to forgive the shower. Quite unacceptable if staying longer or if it was hotter. I love the area. Full of vinyards and great restaurants. In high summer it could be quite magical staying in this area. Gavi is a great find and I think a place i will come and visit more often. Anyway if the bed in teh triple is improved and the water in the shower too. I have no problem giving it a 5 star. Esspecially when you consider the price.

    Cosy and friendly

Cascina Santa is run by a couple in their forties and their daughter helps out also. It is an old farm but things are kept impeccably clean. We stayed for four nights in July 2014. The rooms are located in an annexe next to the main building where the owners live. On the first floor there is the shared kitchen and dining area; the kitchen is perfectly equipped with everything you need, except for a fridge. The owners are friendly enough to let you put your coolbox cartridges in their own fridge, though it is not as convenient as having a fridge right there. There is one room on this floor with a bathroom across the hallway. On the second floor there are two rooms and a shared bathroom, One room has twin beds, the other one a "matrimonale" double bed and a kind of rollaway. Everything is spic and span and decorated with loads of knick knacks which add an old, homely feeling to the whole place. The only small drawback is the shower which has really little water pressure and it takes some time before the hot water arrives...To end with some positive notes: there is what is advertised as a 'patio', a kind of pavilion tent on the grounds with tables, chairs and cushions in summer; a sweet place to relax, read or just hang out and take in the quiet of the surroundings. Get a bottle of homemade wine for 5 euros and the landlady will treat you with an excellent selection of local stuff (we got salami, ham from Novi Ligure and lard from Toscane, homemade preserved zucchini and paprika). Finally, the breakfasts are really excellent: apart form a very nice selection of cheese and meats, we got warm, freshly baked 'brioches' twice and were treated to a home-made zucchini quiche and one of the best apple-cinnamon cakes I have ever eaten.
