    Perfect place to unwind

After a hectic three days in Tokyo we made a one night pit stop here to rest and relax. So glad we did! Hakone Gora Byakudan is breathtakingly peaceful. From the moment our train arrived and the hotel had a car pick us up to the next day when they took us back - the staff were friendly and helpful. Loved our in-room onsen and sitting in the lobby overlooking the mountains. A truly special experience for us. Thank you to the staff at Hakone Gora Byakudan for a wonderful stay!

    Worth the price

We stayed here for 1 night and it was one of the most memorable experiences! When we arrived to the property, we were escorted inside and treated with towels, mochi, and matcha tea while they checked us in. Their lounge has amazing views of the mountains and it's a great place to have tea or coffee. They then escorted us to our room and gave us a tour of the room and all its features. The room was very clean, spacious, and beautiful! We had a private onsen that also looked very clean and we couldn't wait to use it! You have all the amenities you could need and kimonos to wear while you're there so you don't need to bring anything with you! We used our onsen and rested in the room (they give you different incense to try and also have small snacks for you in the room) until it was time for dinner. The food was very fresh and high quality and the presentation had a lot of attention to detail. It was a kaiseki dinner and we were very full afterwards. We went back into our room and our bed were made up. The next morning we woke up early for breakfast and it was another multi-course meal. The food was just as good as the previous night and it was a great start to the morning. The food is very seafood heavy for both dinner and breakfast so keep that in mind. They also have wine, sake, and soft drinks in the evenings and champagne in the mornings in the lounge area that's included with your stay. We went back into our room and enjoyed our view and onsen one last time before we checked out. The staff was very gracious and hospitable and the hotel was a true getaway. It was a true 5 star experience all around and we wish we could've stayed longer!

A true gem that exceeds all my expectations

I just spent 3 days at this ryokan with my husband. Although I have read all the reviews and browsed the website, I still wasn't prepared for how wonderful the experience would be. I had planned 3 nights in this hotel at the beginning of our trip, thinking we could just relax for 3 days to recover from the jet lag - since the trip took about 20 hours. I had no idea this was going to be such a treat for the body and the soul. We arrived on the tail of Typhoon Hagibis but we had no trouble getting to the hotel by taxi. The hotel is located fairly high up the mountain so was not impacted like lower-lying hotels. The signs along the road marks the hotel well so it is easy to find. The hotel is spotlessly clean and very well maintained. The main area is beautifully designed with huge glass sides to give an unobstructed view of the mountains. There are plenty of cozy chairs for guests to relax in while taking in the view. We spent a fair bit of time in the main area, where you can also make your own coffee and tea. Complementary alcohol is also served in this area in the evenings. Guest rooms are spacious and well equipped with amenities. We booked one of the smaller rooms but got a tour of the larger room which we think would be well worth the money. The beds are extremely comfortable and we loved the duvet and pillows as well. The private onsen is unbelievable. We chose a room where the onsen is located outside in the garden and what an experience it is! There is a huge pine tree which must be quite ancient. I noticed whoever built the hotel carefully built the deck and lattice roof around this tree to preserve it. I would never forget the amazing feeling of soaking in the hot spring on a rainy misty night, where the carefully placed spotlight revealed the dancing mist among the trees. The whole place is very well appointed. Fresh flowers everywhere. Clean and elegant furnitures. And incents everywhere! The name of the hotel means sandalwood in Japanese. I'm guessing the owner is fond of sandalwood. All over the hotel there are incent burners and fresh incents are lit every morning, giving the place an incredibly peaceful and positive ambiance. In the room they provided an electric incense burner, with the most delicate-looking incents I have ever seen! I couldn't resist but bought a set to take home. The food is simply out of,this world. My husband and I are pretty picky about food and have experienced lot of good food both at home and when we travel. But this is something of a whole different caliber, I have only had Kaiseki diner once but this time I had a whole new appreciation of what good food means. We have two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. But we found ourselves totally satisfied with no craving of any kind beyond those two meals. It fascinated me but thinking about it a bit, it is easy to understand. The meals are prepared with the best quality ingredients. Both of us agreed we had the best beef, fish and pork belly in this place. We can see the TLC put into each item in front of us. Every meal is a feast for the taste buds and I couldn't find a single thing I disliked - which is amazing because each meal consists of multiple courses and a great variety of items. I'm afraid it will be a little difficult for me to find meals that can measure up to this for the rest of our trip. The services - what can I say? This is Japan and good services is a trademark here. I could only say that the hospitality we felt is very genuine. From the manager to the staff who served dinner to staff we just meet around the place, everyone makes us feel so welcome and they cannot do enough to make our stay more perfect. This is a place where you can rest your body and soul, where you can be content doing nothing and still feel like you had a perfectly fulfilling day. The clean mountain air, the hot spring, gorgeous views, the beautiful aroma of incents, wholesome yet meticulously prepared food, the luxury of your own private onsen, and a team of staff who know how to pamper their guests - that's what I will remember. It kind of reminds me of the bath house in the movie Spirited Away - a place where the spirits go to replenish themselves.

    What an amazing stay!

I feel so hearty as Im writing this - this small but luxury and high standard onsen resort is so lovely. All the staff are so nice, so friendly and so considerate! Its all the small things that they did that made our experience so good. Well be back!

    Stunning hotel, great staff !

We just spent two nights at the Byakudan hotel and we are greatful for this retreat for the following reasons : - first: the staff is highly professional, very thoughtful and speak good english, they will do everything they can to make you comfortable and welcome, - location : convenient with the free shuttle to the bus station and very nice drivers, - the ryokan itself is both modern and traditionnal japenese, the standard rooms are a little small though, - You can stay there bringing absoltely nothing as they have everything, - everything is included in the rate (free minibar etc) except for wine or sake at the restaurant, - The meals were excellent, fresh products and authentic japenese food (you have to be open minded if youre from the west :)) - the Onsen: perfect and if you have tatoo you can use it. Thank you for everything !
