BIg rooms and a great view

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights. Huge suite with 2 bedrooms with wonderful views. Houskeeeping was poor - dirty carpets, windows and scuffed furniture. If you want a quiet night make sure your room faces the sea otherwise you won't be able to open your windows for the traffic noise. Only instant coffee available and no western food available for breakfast, although my wife, who is |Chinese enjoyed all the food. Set away from beaches on it's own peninsula so it's taxi or bus into town.

    4-Star Hotel With Starless Service

A weekend getaway from the big city, the beach front property is conveniently situated close to No. 1 and 2 beaches providing a great view, but only on the fogless/smogless days. Our starless service gadar picked up when we noticed 5 front desk reps taking an hour to handle a group of guests checking in (that is us). The hotel and its starless service began in full force when we were told by room service to get cutlery ourselves because "there weren't enough people to help us". Dumbstruck, we passively went downstairs to find out, no cutlery was available. After much complaining, they were surprisingly available - with a deposit on the plates and disposable chopsticks (separate from the room deposit, of course). Our stay would be rather pleasant had we not moved from the Executive Suite B three times from one room to another on the same floor (and my friend to sleep on the sofa due to springs sticking out from the mattress). You would think they would upgrade us to the Suite As over after an hour of waiting for our third move to a new room due to drainage malfunctions of more than once (first room and second room). We were told by the staff, to take showers in the morning because the drainage problem could not be fixed and it was "too late in the evening". That evening after our persistant calls to the front desk, we realized that for a "Foreigner friendly hotel" (a sign that welcomes foreign visitors posted outside, but in Chinese of course), there was no staff member who was proficient enough to speak Japanese or English. Luckily, our Chinese classes paid off! We filed a complaint to who we thought was the manager to find that he didn't even bother to listen to our complaints but just wanted to give us a quick 20% discount. In the end, when we were directed to the right person, she left us to directly deal the money matters with the front desk and did not supervise the situation to the end. After much trouble and paper work, the front desk even forgot to give us our deposit back. For an off peak season, such a small case happened with customers leaving disgruntled and unhappy. My friends and I wonder, how can they handle the foreign guests coming from abroad when the Olympic sailing events happen in over a month's time?

    A disappointing experience

The problem with Qingdao is that is seems to lack the hotels oriented on foreign guests, at least in beach zone. Not being able to find more interestingly looking sea-view options in the web, we finally booked Donghai, but we didnt feel too comfortable about it and were proven right. The location of the hotel is indeed good, if the purpose of your stay is to rest by the sea. You can walk from there to both Beach # 1 (the distance is 500-600m) and Beach 2 (the distance is little greater, but still walkable). The tree-lined alleys of so-called Badaguan scenic area, behind Beach # 2, also warrant some good walks and can give you a hide when the temperature at the beach reaches its daily peak. The beach infrastructure isnt too sophisticated around there, but you can find few decent seafood restaurants along the beach shore just past HuaShi Lou and nice beach café at Beach # 1. In case you are fed up with those, take a ride by cab to the city center. There is a taxi stop down the slope, at the foot of the hotel. From the outside (when you approach it) the hotel looks like Titanic when it crashed against the rock it still stands, but will go under water soon. I really had a difficulty believing that it was built in 1997 and renovated in 2008, as it was advertised on agoda website. As to hotel interior - it had a strongly worn out imperial look that might had once appealed to some people but now can only evoke jeers. Cigarette odor was present virtually everywhere, including our non-smoking suite, which by the way was equipped with ashtrays. Cleanliness level left much to desire there was a thick dust layer in the wardrobe, bathroom towels had an undefined color between white and grey, the carpet seemed to be last vacuumed a month ago, if not earlier (we found some cake crumbs and cherry stones on its surface on our first day there). Regarding hotel amenities and customer service: no Wi -Fi was available, even in the lobby (its 21st century for Gods sake!); only one receptionist spoke some English (so with all the matters requiring hotel assistance we had to wait for his shift), the breakfast was available at the price of 30 yuan per person, but it was purely Chinese and they did not seemed to bother to replenish the dishes after they disappeared. In a nutshell, in case we want visit Qingdao once more, we will probably still consider same stretch of the coast, but will definitely invest more time behind hotel search.
