  Ideal base for visiting Chengde

  The Qiwanglou is a very smart, upmarket and well-appointed hotel with lovely old buildings arranged around beautiful gardens. It is ideally situated for visiting the Imperial Summer Resort, a five minute walk down the hill. The rooms are spacious with excellent facilities (although there was a minor problem with the outflow of our shower, resulting in a small flood in the shower room), the beds are extremely comfortable and the staff are very welcoming and willing. As other reviewers have commented, although the staff in reception speak good English, the restaurant staff do not, and choosing a coherent meal from the slightly bewildering menu and communicating our choice to the waitress at dinner was a challenge. Breakfast was only slightly easier. Nevertheless, the Qiwanglou is a charming, comfortable and intriguing place to stay, probably one of the best in Chengde, especially for non-Chinese speakers.

  Very nice hotel and appropriate service

  Living in Beijing, we spent a weekend in Chengde. The travel agency advised us this hotel located in the Center of the city and just nearby the Summer Palace Resort. The personal is really nice and helpful. The room we got was smelling cigarette even if no smoking. We asked to the reception to change the room and they upgraded us without any further discussion. The restaurant of the hotel is also very tasty with a nice view from the terrace. English skill of the reception is good, in the restaurant a little bit less.

  Fabulous! Just love it!

  We booked from c trip and spent three days and 2 nights in Chengde. The hotel itself is a part of Summer Palace. We are surprised by joy! It is so beautiful and the service is excellent. My husband and I love it. The restaurant is great, with good food and service. We will leave tomorrow but left our hearts here!

  Nice location,good food, what else ?

  I read much criticism about this hotel. Let's be clear: it has been built in historical houses where former foreign ambassadors came to visit emperors in Chengde. So one has to understand that the value of the history is probably more important than the width of the mattresses.. Having said that, the hotel is at 100 meters from the entry of the palace and the garders and the restaurant is surprinsingly good with truly authentic Chinese food (and not tourist food). So a very good place to be for one or two days. The sole criticism (but the hotel is not guilty for it) is that Chengde has been made in some areas ugly by the development of new buildings and the high rate of pollution.

  What a charming hotel with beautifully landscaped gardens and offering memorable food experiences

  My wife and I travelled China with Wendy Wu on a private 24 day tour in June and July 2018 and how privileged we were to have a 2 night stay in beautiful Chengde in the Hebei province, around 220 kilometres north-east of Beijing. For starters there was hardly a western tourist in the place. However there were thousands of local Chinese travellers enjoying the sheer beauty of this lovely part of their huge country. Feeling like we were the only westerners in town was a real buzz for us. It was great sharing the attractions of the place with the locals. We were thrilled with our accommodation at the Qi Wang Lou Hotel also known as the Chengde Imperial Mountain Resort. The landscaped Chinese gardens throughout the hotel complex are magnificent and give the hotel a great first WOW impression. Given the few westerners in town we found the limited English spoken by the reception staff a little difficult at times but with sign language we managed to work things out. The bed in our room was very comfortable even though the room itself was basic but roomy. The rooms were very clean and tidy and the bathroom facilities very adequate. A real highlight of this hotel is the food served at their informal Tongyueting Restaurant. A top taste is their yangzhou fried rice the best fried rice we tasted on our China trip as well as their fried pork Chengde style and Honey Guangdong style barbequed pork which were also very nice dishes. On our second night we chose delightful western dishes with an Asian twist enjoying tasty baked BBQ pork pies and delicious custard tarts. The restaurant staff had only a little command of English but it did not matter as they were very friendly and courteous and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our dining experiences. We also enjoyed having breakfasts here on both mornings. While the food was great it was the beautiful harmonious Chinese garden landscaping that makes this place so charming. What a sheer delight walking the hotel grounds. The careful placement of rocks and trees in the gardens is breathtaking. We thoroughly enjoyed our short visit to Chengde with its outstanding Puning and Puyou Temples and of course the magnificent Chengde Mountain Resort with its imperial palaces and gardens including the Summer Palace with a museum showcasing ancient porcelain and a wonderful range of antique clocks. We would recommend this charming hotel as a nice place to stay in Chengde
