  very good hotel, in area near great Austrian mountains

  Very good hotel. Quiet, silent position.Clean, large rooms. Indoor and outdoor swimming pool, in a large meadow with sun loungers, sauna. Rooms located on the back of the hotel have great view on the mountains. Located close to a ski area (Goldried) and Tauern national park, wonderful walking/trekking area. Parking places available at garage. Good and somehow particular restaurant, with large wine selection - some superb. Why not five points? The hotel is a little old, needs somewhere small refurbishment; the position is near great mountains but not so close (have to take the car and drive about one hour to starting point to Venediger or Glockner). There are rooms with ladders to go to sleeping area: normally are bigger, but can be uncomfortable. Overall very good, not very expensive, recommended.

  Friendly family run hotel with excellent food

  Our second visit to this family run hotel was in February 2018. It is situated in the middle of the village close to the ski bus stop and a couple of small shops and cafes. Our room overlooked the street but was quiet even with the occasional snow plough and steady flow of traffic. Our room was in the old part of the hotel and was extremely spacious and comfortable. However there were decorative issues which need some attention. Dinner: This hotel is recommended for its five course evening meals, which were varied and outstanding. Cons: Wifi in our bedroom was so weak that it was almost unusable. If it bothers you, I would recommend rooms nearer to the transmitters which were adjacent to the lift! Spa: Facilities were excellent but frequently so busy that access to the sauna was almost impossible. Pros: The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful.

  Good location

  We spent 6 days in this 4 star hotel that is located in the center of Matrei. It is a very good location for exploring the Hohe Tauern National Park. Staff was friendly and professional. Beautiful SPA. Great breakfast and dinner. Room spacious and clean. You may not like the atmosphere because of the furniture but this hotel has everything you need. There is un underground garage. We enjoyed renting an e-bike for just 20 Euros/day.

  Worst ever

  I have spent 120 hotelnights the last 5 years and never had a bad experience. I travel alone in my job as a CEO, with my two kids and with my girlfriend. Some hotells are ok and some are great, never really bad. The service at this hotel though is remarkable (its a fawtly tower experience) and i only spent 10 minutes with the reception desk and then decided to leave with my two kids without having a plan B. Thank god the Hotel Outside 100 m down the road had one room left which makes it possible for us to spend at least two days in Matrei. I will not go into details but the reception told us that the confirmation by agoda was not valid since they dont have an agreement with them. I showed them my confirmation by email from agoda and also that the hotel is shown in the agoda app. The answer was that they did not know that and suggested to take any questions with agoda. Actually they said that this is your problem with Agoda, not ours. Meanwhile they had a reservation with the same confirmation number as mine BUT the price was 1000 Euro higher! I left the room directly with my two hungry kids (11 and 15) directly to the car without having a plan B. The start of vacation couldnt be worse.At the same time, this situation opened up new oportunities and we discovered the great hotel Outside.

  Hotel Rauter is trying to cheat guests with children and threat you if you make a review not favourable to the hotel!

  Michael and Andrea Obwexer, owners of Hotel Rauter in Matrei, are systematically trying to cheat guests with children, several similar cases are confirmed. They also threat you via email, if you dont remove the bad review we will take legal steps. I made a booking through Booking.com including my 10 years old daughter and myself. We arrived a late evening in February at the hotel and the Obwexers welcomed us by claiming my daughter was not included in the confirmed price and if I didnt pay the double price we would not get any room! I showed them the confirmation from Booking.com clearly stating my daughter was included. The Obwexers informed me the agreement was between me and Booking.com, and had nothing to do with them. Its a great disgrace how the Obwexers are trying to cheat tourists of Matrei and giving the village a bad reputation. Shame on you Michael and Andrea Obwexer for your greed and arrogance! I really hope you dont treat your employees in the same horrible way. Many thanks to Hotel Goldried who welcomed us in such a nice and professional way and turned our week into a success.
