    Shinshu Matsuhiro Hotel

The room is ok although the size is quite compact. I experienced toilet smell and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I had Breakfast at the hotel and its rather plain. There is an onsen inside the hotel but I didnt use this place. I had no choice as this hotel was booked by travel agent that I use but I would want to change to a better place.

Ok enough if you have no other option

This hotel is a 3-Star hotel in Matsushiro about 9km from Nagano train station. We ended up staying here because the hotels in the city were fully booked months before for the marathon. Here are the good things about the hotel: - room is big (we chose the western style) - room is very clean - staff are helpful although English is limited - room rate includes breakfast and dinner (no restaurants are nearby) - has indoor onsen (although we didnt use it) - has coin-operated laundromat Things that are ok but perhaps can be improved: - breakfast options - theres a lot to choose from but mainly caters for Japanese and Chinese guests, maybe the western option can be expanded or if not at least changed slightly daily - breakfast & dinner venue - they have the meals either on the ground floor or on the 3rd floor in a banquet room. The ground floor venue is slightly better as its got windows. The banquet hall has a food mess / school canteen feel to it. Even though the dinner food is ok, you just want to eat quickly and get out otherwise you end up smelling of food (and not good ambience at all). - breakfast & dinner time - latest time to get in for breakfast and dinner are 9am and 730pm respectively; we find this a bit too rigid especially for breakfast. Dinner might seem reasonable but you could be done eating dinner by 8pm and then theres nothing else to do. - location (obviously not one that can be changed) - this is not walking distance to the Nagano train station so unless you hired a car or are part of a tour group, its not very convenient as a base; the hotel has a few shuttles to/from the train station but you have to book so its hard to do it going back to the hotel as its hard to predict what time wed be finished for what we organised for the day; I think there are public buses but we just took the taxi so it did cost us a bit (about ¥4000 per trip on average). - theyve made some small attempts to have some English translation for the meal cards but thats it (even then its not full translation). They can probably invest in doing more English translation since most of their staff speak very little English. This will minimise the need to ask their staff questions. Overall it wasnt a bad stay but I think this hotel caters for local tourists and some Chinese tour groups. If youre not these types this hotel is not ideal. Plus the location is not ideal too if you are an independent tourist.

    Simple, bright and convenient hotel.

We were on our way (we drove) to Takayama and decided to stop by Nagano for some sightseeing activities. The staff welcomed us warmly when we arrived. The deco of the hotel is huge as it is situated outside Nagono City (about 10Km away) but next to the hotel is a supermarket and this is very convenient to the guest. We were impressed with the Onsen area where it is big, bright and clean. The Onsen area comes with a sauna and dressing areas. The hotel provide the guest with shishedo shampoo and body wash, they even have other choices of body wash or shampoo in the Onsen area. We find this hotel is very generous to their guest. One of the facilities to my surprise is self-coin laundry machines provided and it is located at outside the Onsen area. This made us doing self laundry very easily and convienient. We were only there for 3 nights and the bed is comfortable and the room is big. With self drive traveler, the parking is free and is close proximity to the highway entrance to other tourist areas.

    Authentic & fabulous!

We booked very last minute (same day!) and their staff was superb from the time that they answered our phone call through our entire stay! Very professional, friendly & with excellent English. We stayed in a western style room at the top floor, very comfortable, super clean & with lots of space. It has an amazing onsen / public bath that I went every night with my 3 years-old daughter. They also have great restaurants. Most guest appeared to be locals and many were wearing a yukata within the hotel area. It felt so authentic & and unique! This hotel has lots of personality. The ground floor has a little playground that our little one enjoyed playing. It was nice watching her play whilst having a lovely complementary coffee. The hotel is located in a beautiful area in Nagano near the mountains. Wed love to come back and would definitely recommend it to other travelers. Amazing!

    Large hotel for large groups

The official name of the hotel is Daiwa Royal Hotel Nagano. A very large hotel with good sized rooms. Large banquet rooms for large groups. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast with a good selection of Japanese and Western food. The French Toast was very popular. The Chinese food we had for dinner was better than average. The hotel is clean and the view was great from the room. But the location is a little out of the way from everything. Near the highway so it would be convenient for travelers passing through. There was a shop and cafe but no convenience store.
