The best of a average bunch

The people are what make Tonga so special. Other than that, do not expect anything amazing. The breakfast buffet is adequate and the staff are what make your breakfast experience memorable. The restaurant is often out of ingredients so your first or second choice for lunch or dinner is often not avaliable. This is common across Tongan hospitality. Two wheelchair accessible rooms where the drainage hasn't been configured very well and the bathroom floors flood during your shower. The tiles when wet are dangerously slippery throughout the room. During the storm our room flooded and necessitated that we change rooms at 1am in the morning. Outdoor furniture is very comfortable and high quality however the atmosphere definitely lacked, very rarely music being played to create the atmosphere. I wish they would pick better times of the day or even night than the middle of the afternoon to drain the sewage tanks by the pool and bar. The smell was unbearable. The house keeping is very slow to clean rooms often in our room upwards of an hour and the room is still not cleaned. The towels are washed rather than replaced daily meaning your room is without towels for up to 6 hours a day. The cups and dishes are not cleaned in the rooms. The housekeeping staff also speak in Tongan in front of you and giggle which I found a bit unprofessional. The gym is hardly functional, never cleaned and equipment scattered often blocking access to other machines. Access to the manager was near impossible hence this review, but what is very unfortunate is that thread's in this review are common across others and appear to be falling on deaf ears.

Good Hotel but beginning and end horrible

Positives: Most staff friendly especially Koi at the poolside bar restaurant and breakfast who was hardworking always attending to guests and seeing if they wanted anything. Management should give Koi an award because of his value to hotel. Restaurant is casual and has reasonably priced basic bar meals with a daily special and open every day including Sunday when most things shut. Restaurant meals came quickly even on a night where they were full. Breakfast had a good selection of choices and an egg / bacon station making to order. Only suggestion would be to include orange juice also and fresh pineapple pieces on the fruit platter. Hotel outlook to ocean is panoramic with well-maintained ocean front walkway going east and west. A pleasant walk on the wharf opposite watching all the teenagers impressing their friends by brave dives over rocks into the sea showed the community culture of Tonga and the countless young people saying hello endorses Tonga as the friendly isle. Suite 2220 on third floor facing ocean is spacious with good uninterrupted views and wide balcony with table and chairs. Bathroom large, well laid out and clean. Only odd thing in suite was light switches in odd locations with haphazard logic and no switch when entering room. Two levels of rooms on one entire wing were being refurbished yet there was no noise from this area indicating they keep the hotel well maintained and care for the guests. Negatives: The nearest good restaurants (Waterfront 15 mins walk east; Seaview Lodge 18 mins walk west; Billfish Bar 19 mins east) but as it was mostly raining we ate in the hotel as the staff were happy and good to us. Sadly my last memory of this hotel is a nasty experience with an early morning check out that was rude and a possible scam. Being an early departure I fully paid my bill on the evening before so leaving a zero balance. On returning the room cards I was faced with a heated argument from the male receptionist demanding an additional nights accommodation. Thankfully I was able to produce proof of payment yet I received no apology for his error but rather an inference it was my fault. I was disturb and shaken by this demanding behaviour seeking more money. I later met another hotel single young female guest who they attempted to extract 3 extra nights payment from. This could possibly be a scam hoping the guest pays cash and then put it in their pocket. Either that or the hotel need to train staff on the accommodation software, do an audit to see how many guests have overpaid but most importantly staff need to learn to say sorry when they make mistakes. Suggest management counsel or dismiss the rude male staff person as the other female day reception staff are lovely. Allowing this male receptionist to treat guests rudely is destroying a great hotel especially considering this was my last memory. There was no sorry for my mistake and no thank for staying. Sadly the first impression of this hotel was arriving at the airport finding they forgot to collect us and failed to wait until all passengers had left arrivals. This transfer was pre-arranged and updated with flight arrival changes and confirmed in writing. Our luggage was last off so we were the second last to leave the arrivals hall. There was no person holding up a sign and a taxi driver told us the hotel buses were on the other side of the street further up so we walked over to the hotel pick up point leaving my wife with the luggage whilst I walked up and down all the unmarked vans trying to find which was the Tanoa Hotel van. My wife was standing right beside an unmarked silver van with dark tinted windows and as I returned it drove off. A taxi driver then told us this was the Tanoa van as we watched it do the sweep out of the airport so we waved to it hoping the driver looked back. Being stranded and perplexed why they drove off we used the taxi driver to get us to Tanoa only to have an argument at check-in with the hotel van driver who mis-represented the truth implying we past him whilst he held up a sign. We know he lied as he said we turned right as we exited the airport which was incorrect as we turned to the left towards the hotel van location. There as no apology and was trying to blame us for his error but worst of all no staff cared. A female reception staff person suggested next time they will place magnetic hotel signs on the van but in 5 days we did not see them affixed. Then on departure despite knowing this issue and past argument I still had to twice make arrangements for the prearranged transfer. Suggest hotel needs to improve systems as we saw 1 guest pay for her transfer but was not on the list. Overall: This is probably the best hotel in Tonga and if management can re-train or replace the staff with the poor attitude this could be an excellent hotel. Most staff are friendly and great.

Disappointing but then there's not much choice in Tonga

Balcony rooms are a waste of money as the views are terrible. Get a ocean view front room as a minimum. Cleanliness is very poor in all the rooms and we saw several. The staff are lovely but they lack training in cleaning rooms and this must be improved in the current climate. Rooms are cramped and small; renovation work ongoing on the top floor which might be good news for new guests in a couple of months. Wifi is poor and for 2 devices only per room though after some cajoling they did provide coverage for 4 devices. Two people together have more than 2 devices needing connected today with phones, ipads, laptops etc. so additional wifi is required which should be easy given the empty state of the hotel. Restaurant food OK but staff need organising to provide acceptable service levels. Breakfast was very good however with eggs cooked to order and bacon only available on request. Coffee lousy, no marmalade and only white bread for toasting. The highlight was some local music being played poolside and a chambermaid bursting into song she had the most wonderful voice. Hotel airport transfer $40top pp; local taxi $40 one way. Taxi to local restaurants was $5 each way.

    Perfect Time at The Tanoa

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights. From the warmest welcome at check in to wonderful staff throughout the hotel, we were so well looked after. The staff are all local and so hospitable, happy and friendly. The room was spotlessly clean and with a wonderful view over the ocean, you didnt even have to step outside to appreciate beautiful Tonga. Breakfast was a fill yourself up for the day buffet with great variety of food and the easy relaxed atmosphere at the pool, with poolside bar and restaurant made you want to just stay there all day! As soon as we walked through the doors of the hotel we felt relaxed and just decompressed from life. With a great art gallery show piecing really interesting cultural artwork and carvings to the soothing island music played by the pool and relaxing surrounded by carvings in the gardens, the hotel manages to create a really good island atmosphere. Rick in Hibiscus tours is super helpful and friendly so you can manage your trip and get to do everything from getting tattooed to island tours and so much more. Ive travelled extensively and stayed in some 1st class hotels and I really think that what Jason, the manager has achieved on this tiny island with this hotel is outstanding: Anyone holidaying in Tonga and wanting a really comfortable, clean, well run, hotel with great food and staff in a central location to bars and other restaurants, then this is the place. Highly recommend Tanoa Hotel Tonga it and look forward to going again.

    Best Hotel in Tonga

I would like to commend Tiola at the front desk and her amazing staff for the quality experience and warm hospitality that we received on our three week vacation in Tonga. We really appreciate you all going above and beyond your best to make us feel comfortable and happy. Every morning we enjoyed their delicious breakfast buffet downstairs by the lobby. The morning crew are very attentive and culturally respectful. I miss the papaya jam on toast with my custom made omelette every morning. After having breakfast we waste no time and hit the road to begin our all day fun in the sun exploring. To name a few things we enjoyed the blow holes, caves, market and their night show with buffet at Vakaloa resort was definitely our favorites. A friend told us that we had to try the submarine sandwich and it was the bomb! I highly recommend the burger as well. It ran for about $10 paanga. A beautiful place for breakfast, lunch and dinner was the Little Italy. But I gotta say we ordered two large pizzas that cost $150.00 paanga, yikes! A few more places we ate at mommas cafe, mum's cafe, cafe escape, billfish, ngutulei, nauti ruby, tevanas and more that I can't remember their names. The top was a great find as well. My list goes on and on with restaurants lol. We usually had our dinners back at the hotel at the pool side. Where we met the most funniest and entertaining gentleman who work's at the bar. "Koi".. Tiola is definitely a true asset to the company. Thank you for making our first time to Tonga one to alway's remember. Everyone from the front desk, restaurant, bell men, security guard's and our awesome housekeeping team are highly professional and very accommodating.
