Excellent Hospitality, Quaint and Charming TownStayed here for two wonderful nights in September 2018. Keita san, the okami san (proprietress),and the rest of the Wakaba staff, truly reflect the Japanese hospitality spirit in seeing to meet and exceed the guests' needs from the heart. From the moment I was picked up at the train station, to the morning I was dropped off, it was one of my top ryokan experiences. Rather than reiterating all the other reviewers' positive comments regarding the ryokan with my own, I'd like to offer a few comments which would hopefully help visitors enjoy this town. All Western guidebooks mentioned Tsuruoka and staying at Tsuruoka or Haguro-machi to visit Dewa Sanzan and suggest doing Sakata as a day trip. I would suggest the opposite, basing yourself in Sakata and doing Dewa Sanzan as a day trip. Unless you have your own car, bus services to Gas-san is only on weekends and national holiays in July and August, and there are no bus services to Yudono-san at all. Bus services to Hagura-san is about hourly all year. Sakata offers many attractions, all within walking distances, and free bicycles are available to bike to the outlying attractions (e.g. Domon Ken Photography Museum and the Sakata City Museum of Art are only 10 minutes by bike). To appreciate Yamagata-ken and Sakata's culture and history, would highly recommend watching NHK's Oshin TV drama series (1983-1984, 120 15-minutes episodes) or the 2013 movie. Both are available online. The Tohoku region, and Yamagata in particular, experienced extreme hardship, poverty, and famine circa the 1890-1920. It is a great story about the human spirit in perseverance and overcoming adversities and obstacles. It will make your visits to the Sankyu Storehouses, the Abumiya Residence, and the Honma residence, all that much more meaningful and enjoyable. Finally, if you enjoy seafood and sashimi, Sakata Kaisen Ichiba (Sakata Fish Market) offers great choices at very reasonable prices.

Very Comfortable StayMy friend and I were on a bicycle trip and this inn in Sakata was so comfortable and pleasant to be in. They were also very helpful. The manager even helped us out greatly in planning a train trip at the last minute to Nagano. The onsen was a pleasure and the room was very stylish and comfortable. I definitely recommend!

Nice Ryokan, great hospitalityAs for a japanes Ryokan the room was small, but very clean and quiet! The menu we ate was very good! Best of all was the great hospitality and service, especially from Keita and Akane - the owners. Keita speaks very fluent English and showed us some beautiful places around Sakata in his private time (!!!). Got free Bikes to drive around Sakata too. Very Advisable! Had a really nice time there, and felt very comfortable. Best Hotel/Ryokan and service we had in Japan!

An Excellent StayWe spent 2 nights at Wakaba Ryokan and it was absolutely a great choice: delicious menu, great service and hospitality. Keita, the owner, speaks perfect English and that was just great for a tourist like myself who speaks just a few words of Japanese. The room is very clean and cozy. There is an Onsen inside the hotel with a garden view. I loved all the little details in this hotel. all in all, it gives a boutique hotel kind of feel and yet it offers exactly what one looks for in a traditional ryokan. Totally worth it and I would highly recommend it.

Charmant Boutique Hotel with a Cosy VibeTravelling around Tohoku, we spent 2 nights in this ryokan. We were warmly welcome by the staff and met with the owners who are a lovely Japanese couple. She is a great cook and we had very good breakfasts and dinners with local and fresh ingredients. He is taking care of guests and as he speaks perfect English, he can recommend you the best places in town. The room is spacious, cosy and very clean. We really appreciate our stay and will definitely recommend this place to any travelers. Thank you for your warm welcome and great hospitality. It made our tip unforgettable!
