    A great location

Our third time to Gambia..this time stayed at the African Village Hotel. great room overlooking the sea, clean and had all we needed. The hot water comes and goes and the electric goes off from time to time, and the furnishings could do with an update, but if you want good service, good food, excellent weather and a really relaxing holiday this is the place to go. Some entertainment in the evening. If there is anything you need, somebody will find it for you. Dont be put off by the young men that hang about, they can be very good guides, for a small fee. The way of doing things is diffferant to ours. The little bar next to the hotel is well worth a visit. The people are poor, so take some sweets for the children. The hotel can arrange a taxi to the places of interest, just see the man at the gate. A travel kettle comes in handy. The hotel beach is good and the pool area is great. Just enjoy the experience.

It doeswhat it says on the tin!! Honest review as always

This hotel is 3.5/ Quiet location relaxed environment and get away from it all feel. Rooms are basic ,being able to blow dry my hair and see in a mirror would have been good. Showers are cold. Breakfast, hope you like eggs! Every day its eggs but served by Hattie who has the warmest laugh ever. Fruit, bread, jams, cheese daily with occasional baked beans/porridge. Take sauce with you, it does help. Evening meals are excellent, no complaints. H/B option is set menu at no cost or use 650D towards the A La Carte, make sure you get your vouchers. Beach is very peaceful. Swimming difficult and some steps to get there. Pool is nice, no problems getting a bed. Entertainment is very good, lots of traditional music/dancing etc. Location is what lets this hotel down, its literally in the middle of nowhere with 2/3 cafes outside, be warned, when you leave the hotel you'll be surrounded by lots of the locals wanting to help you it can be very intimidating. We had one trip away from the hotel, the wrangle as to who was taking us and the ensuing argument between the locals and hotel security put me off leaving the hotel again. Be prepared to see poverty. Overall, it was a lovely and chilled holiday, but for us, this area/hotel wasn't for us.The staff are lovely and are so happy to help (apart from the room maid who decided to help herself to my "airport" clothes which I only managed to retrieve by luck) Like I said, it does what is says on the tin, no frills, you get what you pay for.

    Good, honest value for money!

I had read a number of reviews about this hotel before visiting so I had a overall decent but realistic expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. For my purposes it was fine but don't expect a wide variety of options for breakfast. If you can't get by on eggs, simple cereal or the occasional chicken sausage then this may not be the place for you. Evening meals are fine though. The facilities are good and reasonably clean and the man made beach is a novel idea and the sea view from the restaurant is pretty impressive. I stayed in a basic African styled hut which was more than adequate for my needs. I did not opt for air conditioning but the thick walls and the fan was more than capable of insulating you from the often searing heat encountered when you step out! One word of warning... If you really can't manage life without Wi-Fi then you are in trouble. I had read about WiFi issues beforehand and sure enough, when I enquired I was told there was a "problem" with the Wi-Fi and the "engineers are working on it". Needless to say, I never got to see it working during my week's stay. Then again, I personally did not miss it and in fact it was a blessing in disguise because in a funny way it really helps you to relax and forget about the world and concentrate on your holiday. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I will undoubtedly be going back again!

Many basic and easily solved issues prevented us from actually enjoying our stay.

African Village Hotel is an excellent hotel if you LOVE: * Taking cold showers with very low water pressure where you get in doubt if you will ever rinse out your shampoo. * Seeing your poop again and again after you have flushed and you have a little plumber hidden inside of you so you can try and fix your toilet. * Slamming your room door because it is tilted and loose in the bracket. * Hearing the same music CD played loudly over and over every day by the pool. * Swearing at your smartphone/tablet because the WiFi is not working. * Sleeping to the the sound of a helicopter. Then you will love the sound of the fan in your room all night. Also, as a bonus you can get a cold from the fan. * Getting a good old back pain from an uneven bed. Also, as a bonus you can enjoy the experience of a bed with mattresses of different lengths. * Paying with piles of cash and having to go outside every other day to withdraw money and pay bank fees. * Eating the same simple breakfast everyday and drinking instant coffee in the morning. * Observing the cultural exchanges of happy tourists and their local bumpsters.
