    First Visit to Anglesey

Magnificent building, staff are lovely, food is wonderful. However the place is cold ,( no warming cosy fires going ) very dimly lit and lacks ambiance. Room and bed very nice and comfortable, but lacking an arm chair to sit and read. Most expensive large glass of house Sauvignon Blanc [ New Zealand ] Ive ever had at £16

    Disappointing

My wife and I decided to tour three of the best Hotels in Wales: Llyn Vrnwy; Gliffaes ; and Chateau Rhianfa over a week as an escape from. COVID. The first two were excellent and we recommend them, Chateau Rhianfa however was deeply disappointing. There were good parts to our overnight stay: the hotel is an interesting building in a wonderful location; the staff are friendly and attentive but unfortunately that doesn't make up for the dreadful food. Our dinner lacked any real taste or refinement, it was also expensive ( which we expected). Fine dinning it was not. At first it was easy to believe that due to COVID the chef was having an off day but the cooked breakfast the following day was also a disaster - greasy and overcooked to the point the bacon snapped rather than being cut. It had obviously been precooked and reheated. When paying the bill it became more obvious that we were being taken to the cleaners. £9 for a small glass of Rose wine from a bottle that would cost about half that in a supermarket really showed this place to be a rip off. If you really want to stay here and enjoy a classic location then do so but my advice would be to eat and drink elsewhere. We will not be returning

    Relaxing

So my partner and I had a two day break staying in Kate's Room with views over the Menai Straights to the snow capped mountains - not a bad view! The hotel is an amazing building, the decor and furniture all in keeping with the time and the entrance and Foyer very welcoming with areal fire. The Staff were all very friendly and efficient and did everything to make our stay memorable. We walked in the gardens admiring the features and plants and made our way down to the water's edge from where you can really appreciate the architecture of the building and the skill in its construction. Our room was warm and very cosy with 'period' furniture and bed - we both slept very well. Food was delicious. Thank you.

    Definitely not a 4 or 5 star.

Overall a nice stay and friendly staff but not up to scratch of a 4 or 5 star. The little things that make a place 4 or 5 star were missing; minimal toiletries, no spare toilet roll, no biscuits with the tea facilities in the room, decor was worn and broken in places and un-ironed table cloths. But the most disappointing and concerning factor was being asked both at check-in and at dinner about food allergies and intolerances and upon explaining I was both gluten and lactose intolerant, I ordered a dish (lamb) which came with Pearl barley (gluten) but wasnt advised about the Pearl barley and the waitress or chef didnt suggest an alternative such as veg/potatoes. We were not asked how we liked the rack of lamb cooked - luckily I dont mind it rare as it was blue! No gluten or lactose free dessert on the menu but offered sorbet which I had, then to discover I had to pay a supplement for it and the sticky toffee pudding my friend had was not hot or sticky! Upon checking out we were told you have £47 outstanding but not given a breakdown or receipt and expected to just pay! A nights dinner, bed and breakfast for two for £356 - a complete con.
