    Great Location But Mediocre Hotel

We booked this hotel as it was one of the very few ones open at this time of the year; most of the hotels we passed by in Gabicce Mare were closed for winter, which is no surprise given that this is a seaside resort. The hotel, in spite of its grand name, is disappointing though. Although we had room with a nice sea-view and a balcony, it had two things which very annoying: the first one was a tiny TV set. Although this did not bother us too much, we watched a film in the evening and it was really too small for the size of the room. But this was by far not the worst feature, what really bothered us was an unpleasant smell that came from the bathroom. At first we thought it was temporary but it persisted the whole night and we could even smell this stench of canal from the bed. The staff was delightful and the breakfast was alright, but nothing special. We would have given this hotel definitely another star had it not been for this bad smell from the bathroom.

    Not 4 star

The hotel in my opinion does not deserve 4 star. While staff is very polite and at disposal building and rooms are old and not very clean (mainly dust problem). Food is average and pool is quite little. I mean if it would have been a 3 star hotel no complains but for a 4 star hotel and the price you pay, it may be overpriced. A big plus is that you are literally over the beach.

    Good 4 star hotel

Nice staff, good rooms, clean. End of September there is not a lot to do anymore. There are some shops, but most of them have limited opening hours. Very close to a nice sandy beach. Breakfast was not bad, but limited. No fruit, just a lot of sweet cakes. Still in high season, it will be a good place to stay

Not a 4* in its wildest dreams.

We arrived in Gabicce Mare, having decided to spend a couple of days by the sea, and liked the look of this hotel, plus it was one of only a few that was actually open. Nearly all the rest seemed to have shut for the season. It looked quite grand from the outside and certainly the open air terrace & inside lounge looked smart. However as we had to stand at reception for about 20 minutes, while FOUR members of staff tried to check us in, we did have time to spot the cracks and flaking paint. (We were the only people there they were not busy! God knows what would happen if a coach party turned up). We eventually got to our room (number 204) which had the side sea view we had asked for & cost 96 euros per night with breakfast. The room itself was very nice, small but with plenty of storage, pretty furniture and drapes, small TV, a fridge that didnt get cold and a broken bedside lamp. The bed was very comfortable and the shades on the window were very good at blocking out the light. The small veranda was just big enough to hold two worn canvas chairs and a table, but the wall managed to hide the view when you sat down although it did catch the evening sun which was nice. The shower room was good although the shower hose was a bit tatty & the sliding door didnt fit properly so the floor flooded if you werent careful plus there were some unpleasant brown drips down the side of the bidet from previous occupants, which stayed there for both nights of our stay! Housekeeping was obviously not a strong point. The tiny soap was not replenished, and neither were the bath towels. We thought we would have a swim in one of the two pools that the hotel boasted about. Neither are sign posted and when we managed to find a member of staff they were also unsure as to which floor they were on!?! Finally managing to locate one we were shocked. Totally deserted, with threadbare loungers, metal chairs with no cushions and bizarrely an ancient, rotting pedalo sat next to the pool which was cloudy with dirt in all the corners. So many of the tiny tiles had fallen off the walls that my husband amused himself by collecting handfuls of them from the bottom of the deep end. (See my pictures). There were also two very odd round things that may have once been fountains? They were full of water so dirty it looked like sewage & were covered with rusting metal grills. Needless to say we didnt linger. Walking back to our room we noticed how dingy & tired the corridors were, lined with tin foil covered pots containing dying plants. Actually quite creepy. Deserted and so dark (even with the feeble lighting on) that I couldnt see into my bag to find my key card. The next day we discovered the second pool which is MUCH nicer. Smaller but clean and with a few descent loungers and chairs and happily spent a few hours there. Although there is no pool side bar to get a drink and we didnt see anyone manning the bar inside the hotel our entire stay. Breakfast was in the pleasant dining room which has lovely sea views but mediocre fare. Small selection of sad looking fresh fruit, water, juice, sliced cheese, salami, tomato, cucumber, plain yogurt, hard boiled eggs, boring pastries & cakes with the obligatory tiny packets of jam & butter. Plus the strangest scrambled eggs with undercooked, fatty bacon mixed in. There was a good coffee machine but it really wasnt enough for the amount of people wanting to use it which lead to queues. What really lets this hotel down is the reception staff. There was one exception a lovely lady who was very helpful and friendly when she was there. The rest of them were rude, arrogant & clueless. It purports to be 4 star in which case I would expect the reception staff to know enough English to tell foreign guests that the hotel does NOT have a private beach and there is NO guest parking & to also know where the pools are located. Needless to say we didnt bother trying to speak to anyone when leaving. Better remember to check the credit card bill when it arrives! As we passed we enquired at another, very smart hotel further along the beach that was open and they had rooms available for 115 euros a night per person. This included use of their gorgeous looking pool, private beach and full board. So in fairness to the Michelacci you seem to get what you pay for.

    Passed its days

2 stars only for the position. Dinner was buffets cooked somewhere else and barely eatable. Breakfast was really poor in quality. The overall hotel is very presumptios but cheap and tacky. In our room there was a distinctive smell of sewage coming from the damp area in the wall. SPA is cold, small and the tiny pool has a pillar in the middle and you have to pay attention to its base which is protruding. Bar was unattended so unable to have any drink. Walls very thin and it seemed to be in the same room with other guests. Polite concierge. Summary is perfect hotel for a budget coach group of elderly.
