Our best Mercure stay so far.

Superb service from everyone we met here. Smiling helpful and chatty. We were the only people in the restuarant for dinner, the waiter was superb and the food excellent. It was just a one night stay as we had a delivery to make the next morning but would seem to be an ideal location for a stay in the Cotswolds. Considering a longer stay once Covid restrictions are removed.

    Business trip

Just returned from a 1 night business travel stay. Was super impressed with the Covid precautions in place, everything was very well organised. Check in was simple and very efficient. I was helped by Ben, the General Manager and nothing at all was too much trouble. My bedroom was very spacious and the bed absolutely huge, and really comfy too. Room service was excellent and delivered very swiftly, and piping hot too. I was really impressed with how clean and tidy my room and the hotel was. Highly recommend, thanks for a good nights sleep Ben and team, will be staying again on my next trip to the area.

Fantastic food, clean but slightly dated hotel

Stayed here for work throughout December and January and the rooms were always clean and tidy although slightly dated as it was an old stately building. Nice bath and tea/ coffee making facilities. Some rooms still had a mini fridge which was bonus. The dinner in the restaurant was fantastic although due to COVID times service was a little slow however the waiting staff were incredibly friendly. Breakfast was disappointing given the quality of dinner but again this could be due to COVID. Walking distance to the town centre and 10 minutes to the station.

    Substandard and dirty

Dirty, scruffy and room not cleaned properly from previous guest. Management either don't care or have no idea. We booked this for a 2 night stay as it was my wife's birthday and we were planning to visit Blenheim Palace on the Saturday. Whately Hall looked really pretty online and we thought it may be a bit special. When we got to the room the first thing we saw was that the door handle was actually hanging off (photo attached). Not great but we could live with that. Entering the room we noticed that the floor had not been hoovered. Lots of small bits on the floor and even a 1p coin behind the door (photo attached). Surfaces were dirty, furniture in poor condition and the bin in the bedroom had not been emptied from previous guests (photo attached). Bathroom was grubby as shown by the amount of limescale on the tap (photo attached). At some stage parts of the room must have been repainted. How do we know that? There was still masking tape on the shower room door handle, the shower room ceiling and the hall ceiling (3 photos attached). Kettle was sticky but the best indicator of poor management was that the tray holding the tea and coffee stuff still had the shop £2 sticker on it (photo attached). Never seen that before! I went to reception at 4.30 and told them the room hadn't been cleaned properly. She was really apologetic and said she would speak to housekeeping and get it sorted. All I asked for was hoovering, wiping down of surfaces and the bin cleaning. We went into Banbury and returned to the hotel at 9pm. Went back to our room and found it exactly as we has left it! I went back to reception who said she had spoken to housekeeping. Apologised again and offered us a different room. So what did we find in the second room? Ripped net curtains, a patch of mould on the wall (photo attached), a big spider's web that looked like it had been there for ages (photo attached) and oh yes, the obligatory £2 sticker on the tea and coffee tray! Do any management ever inspect these rooms? So we decided to stay in the dirty room as opposed to the mouldy one. It was now after 9.30pm so we had to stay but decided for the first time in our lives (we are both 61 and stayed in many hotels around the world) that we could not stay for another night and would check out the next morning. Reception agreed to refund us for the day we were not staying. Next morning we went down to breakfast before checking out and the top plate on the stack was filthy. I gave it to a member of staff who, I must admit, didn't look too surprised, took it from me and didn't say anything. We checked out and had a lovely day at Blenheim Palace and then drove home in the evening. I'm so glad we decided to check out early as the thought of having to come back to this hotel would have really spoiled our day. This should be a lovely hotel but it isn't!

    Over priced dump

Buyer beware! I have never seen such an overly priced dump. The price makes you think it cant be that bad. But sadly, its worse. Ignore the photos they took of their best (and probably only nice) room. It is old, tired and disgusting. I can only imagine a lack of options is allowing this place to stay open.

    Great location, vfm, fantastic bed!

Great location in centre of Banbury. Hotel has old frontage, and a more modern annexe. Car park has narrow historical entrance. (Might need to put your door mirrors in.) Service friendly and efficient. Night manager gets 5*s for cheerfulness! Nice entrance lobby and hotel has a large garden and good catering potential (weddings?) Room had some minor issues. No glasses for water, but very good complimentary water bottles! Leaky/ancient/knackered cold water basin tap (room 89). Some detail maintenance issues on wall coverings. However a special mention for the impressively large bed! Marriott quality mattress, pillows and a fantastic sleep. Our fellow travellers, also said bed was lovely. Great value for money. Would recommend and stay there again.
