    Retirement was wonderful

Great accommodations and food. Staff was unbelievably friendly. Would return again. Sunday brunch was a site to see and experience. View out our room was great. Fireplace in the room added to the experience. They say it is haunted but I couldnt muster up any spirits.

Overnight respite before facing MDI crowds

If you head this way to visit Bar Harbor or MDI - do yourself a favor before you reach that destination and the crowds you will find there: stop for a night or more at this Inn, decompress, relax in stunning surroundings, class of the old sort (Like what Bar Harbor had) and you may find it's the best part of your vaca. I went for the jacuzzi; I live with only a shower, and a sore back and shoulders (and the yen for a night away from home) inspired me to take myself for an away from home overnight. I wanted peace and quiet, gallons and gallons of hot water and a comfortable bed. I got soooo much more. A lovely propane fireplace, a Maxfield Parrish sunset over Phillips Lake and an amazing mattress. There's a pool for kids, et al, a golf course and wonderful staff. Don't drive by this place; do yourself a favor and plan to stay.

    Great Flavors

I ordered the Rack of Lamb cooked medium-rare. It was so tender and flavorful! It was perfectly followed up with Lemoncello Cake. Service was very fast, and our server friendly. And that view! Loved walking out back after relaxing on the bench swing.

    Dinner in the Pub

The menu has not changed in years. Unimaginative, uninspiring food. Used to see more creative offerings from Chef Montes from his storefront in downtown Bangor. I will keep going back because it's close, but I rate the food 2 on a scale of 5. In the winter, the fireplace should already be lit when the pub opens. There was a constant blast of cold air coming from the little conference room off the pub...why was a door being left open? The waitstaff was okay, but a little unattentive. Failed to provide the specials when greeting. After I ordered an app and asked about the nightly specials she listed one of the specials as an appetizer...might have been helpful to know the app special before ordering the apps. Great at refilling the water glasses, but drink service was slow. Food. The caprese skewer app was bland. Just some grape tomatoes and mini mozz balls on a wooden skewer with a light drizzle of balsamic. I might have expected some fresh basil mixed in to the equation there? Additional seasonings? The potato skins were cold and dry, again bland and just kind of blah. A mixture of taco beef and congealed cheese stuffed into a too-potatoey shell. A side of sour cream and salsa that was not made in house. The baked haddock topped with crab. A basic seasoned haddock filet, with some lump crab scattered on top and baked. The haddock was cooked properly, but the crab on top didn't lend anything to the dish except annoyance due to the shell fragments that seemed to appear in every bite. This was served with a watery lemon butter sauce that was entirely forgettable and flavorless. The accompanying vegetables consisting of steamed carrot, cauliflower and green beans were nicely al dente and well seasoned, though some of the cuts were irregularly large and undercooked. Portion sizes were gigantic and the wine list is nice. For the price, I don't see the value though. Staid. That's how I would describe the food. All-in-all the staff were friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere hasn't changed in 200 years, but it still possesses a nice warm ambience. Unfortunately the menu hasn't changed in 200 years either. I would say the offerings rely too much on American culinary trends from the 1970's and needs an injection of fresh energy and creativity from the chef. Would love to see them do less, but more! I left $150 there with tip and felt like it was worth about $75.

Not at all what we hoped for.

The room we had was extremely dated and shabby. Stains on the carper (ugh!), stain on the dust skirt of the bed, stained lamp shade, and water stains on the ceiling in several areas. The bathtub was ok but there were large gaps where it should have been sealed on both sides next to the floor/walls. The bathroom faucet was corroded. The windows were dirty and overall the room did not feel clean. Dinner in the restaurant was mediocre and service was very slow. Desserts are not home made but come from a food service which makes me wonder what other convenience/prepared foods are used. Morning coffee was not good and guests were offered Nature Valley granola bars for breakfast since the restaurant is not currently offering a continental breakfast. You have to drive 15 miles in either direction to find breakfast and good coffee. The cost of staying and eating here was way too high for what we got. The staff were pleasant but that is the only positive thing I can say about the Lucern Inn.
