  Beautiful gastro pub which didn't live up to expectation

  Went here for Saturday lunch as we were passing through Harpenden, and initial thoughts were it looked a beautiful place for lunch. Sadly it didn't live up to expectation. I did write to them afterwards about my disappointing experience but a week later there is still no response. As soon as we sat down and looked at the menu I could see there was no suitable vegetarian option for me. The vegetarian options were poor, goats cheese, bbq jackfruit or a thai curry which was just a pile of brown mush with 4 bits of butternut squash in. My husband on the other hand had a lovely steak meal which he was very happy with, I just wish establishments would put more thought into the vegetarian options. Food was very slow to arrive and when my starter arrived, they forgot the crudite which I had to ask for. My daughters burger was supposed to come with avocado but that was never came. When the main meal arrived, 2 of my party's meals were barely warm and had to be sent back. We requested water on the table 3 times before it finally arrived 40 mins later. We also requested 2 bellinis - we asked for a prosecco with maybe a blackcurrant or raspberry cordial in, when they arrived it was prosecco with orange squash - it was awful, we tried them thinking maybe it was a peach bellini, but we did not want to make a fuss so drank them, but were shocked to see they cost £17.80 on the bill !! I wish I had sent them back! Overall I would definitely try this place again once the menu is changed but I felt that the customer service was not up to scratch, especially when 12.5% was automatically added to our bill which I was shocked at, surely we should be free to add our own tip, I did not notice anywhere that said it would automatically be added. I did not want to make a fuss in front of the family, so paid it, but I came away quite disappointed with the experience and did not enjoy the thai curry at all, in fact I left half of it.

  Lunchtime catch up

  A pub that has gone through a face change since my last visit and I was pleasantly surprised by the clean and traditional style. Excellent range of drinks and although we didn't eat the menu was inviting. Definitely worth a visit but if there was one criticism it would be the staff seemed a little stretched and service at the bar was noticeably slow.

  Meal

  Lovely setting, delicious food but service rather patchy. No menus for ages, not very slick. Wish them well but could be so much more on top of their game than they are! Even the boss lacking in smiles - an air of not bothered. Please dont be complacent in post post Covid times!

  Could be better

  I think as many of the reviews state here there are just a few things that make visiting here just a little disappointing. We booked a table in the outdoor area for four and made sure to include "plus dog" on the booking. On arrival we waited a few minutes at the entrance to be acknowledged and then taken to the table. Ordering was slow, drinks delivery was slow and attempting to pay the bill even slower. Serving staff were friendly but a quip from the manager about "not allowing dogs in the marquee" left us confused: staff saw the dog and staff sat us in there. Apparently not a hard and fast rule which made us wonder why pass comment and a little uncomfortable for the duration of the meal. Food was fine but for the price not the best. Not the first time we've had a poor experience here, let down by service and manager. For the price and experience there are considerably nicer places in Harpenden and around to try.

  Dont bother, going downhill fast

  I have been here on a number of occasions and when they first renovated pre-covid times, it was great, food, service etc. Now, the food is appalling, it comes out with half the elements missing, cold and takes forever to come (we had to wait over an hour for our main course and it was burnt and had to be sent back). The manager is arrogant, rude and condescending until you stand up to him and then he backs down slightly. His attitude is rubbing off on the rest of his staff now as well. Get out of the hospitality industry is my advice to this manager until youve learnt some manners. The menu is small (understandable during covid times) but at 7pm they have already run out of half the dishes, leaving very little choice. Automatically adding 12.5% service charge for two people (I choose what service charge I want to pay and their service does not warrant that). I will not be returning.
