The motel to stay at when in Colac

Clean spacious room with lovely updated bathroom with spa. Also new air conditioning free wifi and good size TV. Nice pool for hot afternoons friendly attentive managers/staff. Didn't get a chance to eat in restaurant as sadly not open weekends but good brekky delivered on time. Close enough to walk to other restaurants bars and amenities would definitely stay here again

    Great Place, excellent Owners

We stayed 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great place, very friendly and clean rooms. Enjoyed chatting with the owners Trevor and Wilma. Will be back next time for sure. Easy access to great ocean road and south of Colac. Nice relaxing areas by the Lake Colac.

    Better than you probably imagine.

From the outside, it could be any average motel, in any average country town. On the inside, nice new spacious bathroom (just like the photos online) new carpet, comfy bed and pillows. Clean, good heating / cooling. Good wifi and some Fox channels. Out the back, away from the main road, the room was not too noisy. Restaurant looks fairly average for one attached to a motel. Meals are well above that. Locals say they only hear good things. Owners are really friendly and always seem to be chatting with someone. A pretty good place to stay.

    Best in Colac

We dine at the Baronga on a regular basis and it is the best meal in Colac. From their steaks to the chicken kevingtons there is something for everyone. Have the chocolate brownie for dessert, its to die for. Colacians do yourself a favour and book in.

So bad that we left mid-check in

We decided on Baronga Motor Inn as it was positively reviewed on Tripadvisor, offered wifi and had spa suites which sounded relaxing. I dont usually write wholly negative reviews, in fact I rarely write reviews at all, but the extremely unpleasant welcome we received when trying to book in makes me feel obliged to warn potential visitors. I sincerely hope the receptionist on duty was an emergency, no-other-option-available ring in and not a permanent member of staff, let alone an owner or manager because it was like being greeted by Basil Fawlty minus the humour. It was the antithesis of a warm, country welcome; this receptionist just should not be in the hospitality industry. The initial greeting clearly indicated we were a nuisance for existing. There was no chitchat of any sort, and no smile or any indication of warmth or personality. Basically, there was no hospitality or welcome. We were then grilled about where we live (fair enough given the pandemic, although it could have been done in a far less charmless way), which included me having to repeat myself and explain self-evident geography (eg. the shire where this Motor Inn is located). The receptionist got my (pretty straightforward) name wrong despite me repeating it multiple times and spelling it. I was then interrupted while briefly deciding with my partner about our choice of payment option, at which point we left and I advised that wed be staying elsewhere. It was actually the most pathetic excuse for hospitality Ive encountered when booking a hotel room; its a shame that one star is the minimum rating on TripAdvisor as this was a zero. When we left we had a lovely lunch at the Union Hotel further west up Murray Street in Colac. The staff were welcoming and professional, it was very comfortable and we rated the food highly (one of us had whiting and one the chicken satay: both very good quality). We were relieved with this positive experience after the dreadful one at Baronga Motor Inn. We were so put off by the negative experience at the Motor Inn we didnt bother staying in Colac but at least we had a nice lunch.
