    Crap Christmas

We travelled for Christmas 2019. 76 travellers from the UK for 6 days with Rail Discoveries. The hotel is nice, but nothing is nearby and dreadful service The hotel was most unwelcoming - atmosphere was poor. On Christmas Eve the description was for a special meal and music in the bar - we were told to be seated by 6pm - no food at all was served until 7:45pm. No music and it was nearly impossible to get a drink from the bar - is that their idea of hospitality? Christmas Day - a special Christmas dinner. Not our idea of special - dried up chicken, solid dumplings and over cooked synthetically sweet red cabbage (actually it was brown). No other vegetables. Partly defrosted lime mousse desert. No atmosphere at all - Happy Christmas!!!! It was never evident who the hotel manager or restaurant manager were. A few of the waiters were very nice, but it was a poorly run shambles and they had no guidance Dont go there

    Christmas 2019

We have just returned from a Christmas trip with Rail Discoveries. This hotel is large and had at least 120 plus guests for the period. The hotel was very efficient and fetched our luggage from the station and returned it when we departed. We were met on the station by a staff member who was able to hand out all our key cards - good idea as we could then go straight up to our rooms rather than queue in the small reception area. A staff member waited by the hotel entrance to guide us in the right direction. We had a good room with balcony facing across the river, it was well fitted and a good size. We decided on two days not to have the room serviced and for this we received some small tokens of appreciation. When it was serviced the job was well done and there were plenty of toilet rolls. The Rail Discoveries trip was not well organised but that was not the hotels fault. The hourly rail service, every day including Christmas Day, meant the village is fairly well served but didnt fit in with our trips - again not the hotels fault. The breakfast buffet had an excellent choice of whatever suited you, from hot dishes to continental with cheeses, meats, fruit cereals and different breads. The evening buffet on four evenings was also excellent, a good choice of main courses available plus starters and a salad bar that offered a huge range. Some of the main courses were a bit unusual but nothing to criticise. The food, when appropriate, was kept hot and you could have whatever you wanted. Some of the dishes were a bit German orientated but nothing objectionable and all the meats etc were very tender. A bit unfortunate with the desserts. Some greedy people took three or four of them which meant there was practically nothing left when we and some others were ready. Very inconsiderate but this is what you can get with greedy people about. The two served set meals were not so good. They were very late starting but then the service was swift and cheerful. Also I noted one evening, whilst we were waiting, our free glass of wine was kept topped up. These meals were served on hot plates and the food was hot even towards the end of service. All the food was properly cooked and couldn't generally be faulted - although some of the side dishes were not brilliant eg. the potato dumpling were not well received. We found the staff very efficient considering the numbers and were very friendly. One tall lad spoke good English and spent some time chatting - he was also very helpful. In general the staff were pleasant and helpful. Good job they were considering the number of people who walked in with muddy boots after our Christmas Day conducted walk! We didnt try the spa or swimming pool but it looked very good through the doors and quite a few German guests were using it. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Considering the number of English guests the hotel could have had some English translations - especially on bar menus and the dinner/breakfast buffets. This hotel would be best in the warmer times and visited with a car. A delightful wine growing area with good walks in the surroundings.

    Christmas holiday with Rail Discoveries.

This was a disappointing holiday, but that was down to Rail Discoveries rather than the hotel. (Have written a letter of complaint to Rail Discoveries, but not yet had the courtesy of a reply). The hotel is in a great location, high above the Moselle River and a 5 minute leisurely walk to the railway station. Staff met us at the station and took our luggage up in their truck, we were also given our room details so that we didn't to have a lengthy wait at reception to be checked in. A spacious, clean hotel and attractively decorated for Christmas. We had a nice bedroom, with comfortable beds and a supply of toiletries in the en suite. In general the staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. We had an excellent breakfast each morning with plenty of choice. The evening buffet (4 nights) was also very good, nicely presented and properly cooked. Unfortunately there was a shortage of desert (gateaux), not helped by greedy guests taking 3 or 4 helpings to their tables on arrival in the restaurant. The two set menu dinners on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day created problems and grumbles, chiefly because the hotel were inflexible with the timing on Christmas Eve, insisting we were to be in the restaurant at 6pm. As we didn't return from our excursion until 17.50, this not popular, especially when we weren't actually served until 18.45 with our starters. However the food that evening was very good. On Christmas Day, the set menu was very Germanic in style and, but to be fair, we were holidaying in Germany. As mentioned by previous reviewers, the dumplings were very solid, the chicken breast was rather dry, and the red cabbage overly sweet. I would recommend the hotel to others; but dear future guests, you must read all the recent reviews and then make up your own minds if you should book or not.

Better than expected, but some disappointments

We visited with a Rail Discoveries Christmas package wondering what we would find after reading very mixed reviews. Overall we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is about 300m from Löf station up a fairly steep hill, and hotel staff helped with baggage and less able guests. The hotel appeared bright and clean, and our room was a reasonable size, clean, well equipped, with a good shower/toilet and comfortable bed. The food was buffet style (except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day), with reasonable choice and good quality at both breakfast and dinner. Hot food was generally adequately hot. Popular dishes sometimes ran out leaving late comers with less choice. On Christmas Eve and Day dinner was waiter-served at table; there was no choice of menu, and the food was not to everyones taste. The service was irritatingly slow. Generally, we found the staff friendly and helpful, and service good, although some did not react well to any critical queries. Overall, we would give the hotel 3½ stars relative to its 4 star rating. It was good for this first visit to the Moselle valley and as a base for the daily rail excursions, but Löf does not have much to offer as a village, and we will probably seek a different location for future visits to the valley.

    Mixed feelings - Overpriced

We spent a long weekend at the Parkhotel Krahennest ( incl my 5 yr old son) The arrival was already not smoothless. Check in is at 3 PM, but our room was not ready till 15:30. It was very inconvenient as we needed a quiet area for an important call. We were neither offered a business center nor a cold beverage in 35 C. We booked a suite as we traveled with a kid. We sadly recognized that the room designer was not a big fan of doors. There was no door between the living room and bedroom and even the bathroom had a transparent glass door, just like the shower in the bathroom... The room was not exactly big and overall it was not worth the 350 Eur .. maybe 250 best, but just because it was new ( design is question of taste..). The toilet has automated light, as the sensor was not the best, it kept turning off. We were also surprised about the "COVID" rule that only 2 people could use the pool at a time. There was a line at the side of the pool so you definitely did not relax when people are waiting for you to get out of the water .. explain it to your kid..It was overdone compared to the "no rule" in the restaurant. Buffet was open, people kept no distance, touched everything with bear hands.. In other hotels where we stayed recently it was the opposite. (The pool could be used freely, but they paid much more attention for serving the food). Breakfast was a bit of a chaos. 1 coffee machine which was broken all the time.. I spent at least 30 min a day on trying to get a coffee.
