Great hotel apart from one thing

We have just returned from a one week stay at the Hochfirst Hotel. In almost all ways it is fabulous. Great location, friendly service & fabulous food. As a couple we booked a junior suite as we like a bit more space on a skiing trip. Our room was well located, had a bath & shower & was completely quiet in the evenings. The food is superb here. Nothing is too much trouble - you can have as much as you want to eat off the daily menu or the set menu. We never managed the full 6 courses but we always enjoyed every course we ordered. The cheese selection is fabulous. The indoor/outdoor pool & sauna & loungers around the pool area were never very busy & it was great to relax after returning from the slopes; and on the one day that the lifts were closed because of high winds, it was very pleasant to read & relax around the pool. The only reason I will not give 5 stars is on account of the charge for tap water at dinner. In a mountain/ski resort where it is essential to stay hydrated, I thought it was appalling to charge. It wasnt the amount that offended me (4 euros...plus a space left for you to tip!) but it is the principle. It is not as if they were not serving wine at rather punchy prices (there really aren't many bottles less than 55 euros & most are 3 figures or more) & I would have preferred they increase the wine by 4 euros & provide free tap water. We enjoyed a bottle of wine each night - at a range of prices- but I felt nickel & dined about the tap water which we did have every night too. 2 other slight niggles, which are not the fault of the hotel, but of the guests. Although we went out of school holidays there were quite a lot of children. Whereas most of them were extremely well behaved, there were several very young children who ran around the dining room at top speed & full volume. The waiters & waitresses, carrying hot soup & hot dishes, were extremely patient & gracious about the absent parenting & feral children. It looked like an accident waiting to happen although these parents seemed oblivious. The other niggle was the dress code or rather the total lack of it at dinner by a few guests. Whilst most people dressed smart but casual there were some who felt that sport shorts & trainers was suitable evening attire for the entire week (it did look like they wore exactly the same outfit every single night). To sit down to a 6 course fine dining meal, it looked irreverent to dress as if you had just come from the gym. But I accept it is hard for a hotel to enforce a standard of dress. We really loved Obergurgl as a resort & hope to return next year for a second visit.. The only thing that will stop me going back to the Hochfirst is their policy of charging for tap water which I feel is totally unacceptable. Such a shame as otherwise it is a really fabulous hotel with superb service.

Some good, some great - but all good

services - great, room - good (lights too low, balcony could be cozier for those who want to admire the view or have a smoke), facilities - good (considering we went for skiing it was enough), pool - great, position - great (ski shuttle right in front of the hotel, ski school behind tye hotel, ski slope - blue - ending at the back of the hotel), beds - good, kids care - great (Monika was absolutly fantastic), cleanliness - great, food - great surroundings - a ski shop, a general shop, two pizza places, other accomodation units

    Wonderful hotel...great location

I have to admit that I was a little nervous taking a young family and teenageer to a 5* hotel after reading previous reviews but...from the moment you step through the door the service is excellent. You can tell that the hotel is 'loved'. The owners should be very proud...and its nice to see they are actively involved in the running of the hotel. Its difficult to fault. There are 3 clear Pro's - Staff, service and location. On that basis alone its a 5*. It would have been nice to have a bigger boot room but never seemed over crowded. I'm not a great fan of getting too dressed up for dinner, particulary with children in tow. My personal choice is to relax and dress down. This is not a hotel where you feel uncomfortable dressed down...smart but casual. I really appreciated this given achy bones from a days skiing. Its kept very clean, but beware cheap trainers and boots...the static electricity is only funny the first day. Will we stay there again with the family...yes.

    BEST SKI TRIP EVER

We had the most wonderful ski holiday here at the Hochfirst last December (2019). The hotel is juts devine. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of fizz. The decoration of the restaurant and bar is stunning, sophisticated and elegant. Beautiful. The service was fabulous - definately worthy of their 5 star rating. We had two boys with us and so it was easy access to the ski lifts, ski in and out. Food was fabulous. There is a kids club but my youngest son at the time who was did not want to go as he loved skiing and it was his first time. The ski school is fantastic!!!! Both my boys loved going each day and loved their coaches. They were in different groups and it didnt bother them. When we skiied alone as a couple , as the resort is small at times we did see them which was really reassuring for us. LOVED the hotel so much, the wellness spa is a real treat after a day on the slopes, a great way to wind down and just stay indoors. We were fortunate to stay in the penthouse, and it was a dream. Absolutely high quality, beautiful, stunning and amazing. I cannot fault this hotel at all. We loved it so much that we want to book again as soon as we feel ski holidays will operate again for external tourists. It is a small chocolate box village, not much apres but thats why we enjoyed it, nice family ski resort.

    Truly Superb

From start to finish we had an incredible holiday at the Hochfirst. Before we arrived we spoke to the hotel over the phone and via email on a number of occasions and they were prompt and courteous in all correspondence. We had some concerns over childcare for our two children, but most importantly for our 3 year old, but we really shouldnt have worried. Both the hotel and the resort were amazing with both of our children (aged 7 and 3) throughout. I would struggle to say anything negative at all about the hotel - maybe the shower gel could have been a bit thicker or the water at dinner a bit cheaper, but that really is about it - everything else was great. Now, all the good things and some information in case it helps... Reception staff (particularly Jasmina) and in fact all the staff in the hotel are a credit to Family Fender and without exception they could not have done more for us. Dinner and all meals were fabulous - you are allocated a table on the first day and that table remains yours for the length of your stay. There was often a buffet choice of salads, deserts, cheeses and in addition a lengthy menu of different courses all of which were presented with two or three options. If none of these were appealing (they were invariably delicious) there was then an alternative menu of other dishes to choose from. It would be incredibly difficult not to find something you like and the food was plentiful with the staff always ensuring you had enough. Children choose from a buffet that changes each day, but again they can almost have whatever they want thanks to the helpful staff. Dinner starts at 6.30pm so early enough for the children to eat alongside parents. We stayed during half term but it didnt feel overrun with children and most if not all were well behaved. Dress for dinner is smart casual, but fairly relaxed. The hotel organised lift passes for us (added to the bill) and there is a boot room with allocated places for everyone based on room numbers. It was busy first thing in the morning, but never overly crowded. The location couldnt have been any better - right next to the ski school for drop off. The only issue with this was that at 10am the drag lift was very busy with parents trying to get up the mountain. The resort could do with a quicker way to leave the ski school area at busy times. The swimming pool area was a favourite for the children after ski school and the ability to swim outside is always fun. The swimming pool rules are fairly relaxed with a mix of families and couples making use of it during our stay. Childcare was incredible(!) - we had babysitting on a number of occasions so that we could enjoy a quiet meal with the reception staff sitting with the children. Monika in the kids room was absolutely fantastic with our youngest and he argued against leaving her on a daily basis. Overall the resort was perfect for us, not too big and not too small. Given it was half term the pistes were some of the emptiest we have skied on - we had moments where we were all alone! Hochgurgl had some particularly great wide open pistes and the fun parks in Obergurgl gave us some long lasting memories. We literally cannot wait to return to the resort and the hotel, and there were tears from nearly all of us on the last day when we had to leave. As soon as this terrible Coronavirus is out of the way and the snow is back so will we be! Thanks Hochfirst for all that you did for us during our stay.
